  1. I usually take the plastic package from the foam dressing, place the steril side of the package over the wound, and then draw the pattern. I have seen surgeons place the black foam into the wound, remove it, cut it some more, and then place it back in. I think that may be okay, as long as you didn't set it down on anything. It's the same bacteria that you are placing back in the wound. I'll be watching for other opinions on this topic.
  2. I have certainly noticed the same at my facility, and we have a few very questionable nurses that will probably hob-nob with the right people and work their way up the ladder. I have a MSN and run the wound/ostomy program for the entire facility and am still fighting my way up the ladder. There is no easy formula. But the benefits are great!
  3. I'm not sure which facility you are applying to, but I love working at my VA. As a nurse, it is a great job with great benefits. Each facility is different, though. I love the fact that if my patient needs a special bed at home, we can get it for him/her. If the patient needs ostomy supplies, I can furnish them to him/her. And it is full, head to toe, nursing. I don't know about other facilities. Nor can I respond to the question about transfers. I know that it now does take time to get in, but it is worth the wait!
