  1. A good lecture is very informative, but it doesn't teach application. The goal is trying to teach the material, and then how to apply it to the real world. I am finishing my first year in nursing school, and I would be lying if I said that I was not dissapointed in the whole experience. It's hard enough to learn everything that is taught, but it is even harder to apply it.
  2. It is bs the way most rn's treat students. They act as if they have never been there. Have they forgotten what it is like to be cast out into the shoadows of a new rotation. You have no idea what to do there except for the many odds and ends you have been fed in class. On a new rotation I feel out of place. It is like the first day at a new job, but nobody wants to help you. You feel not only out of place but unwanted. Experienced RN's need an attitude adjustment.

I am a nursing student going into my senior year. I am wondering how did you know what area of nursing you wanted to get into. I like pediatrics, emergency medicine, and cardiology. How do I decide. I am a male also. I just got done doing a pediatrics rotation at DUKE and I liked it a lot, but you don't see many males in pediatrics. I like helping these children though. I am confused.
  4. Hey Todd. I know what you mean abou being intimidated at first. I started doing cna work before I got accepted into nursing school, so that I could get some experience. It was really good for learning how to work with people on a basic level, but you get burnt out quick. I have only been doing it for 6 months, and it seems like all I do is take people to the bathroom and dress them. I always have to many residents to give them the proper care they deserve. It is a very unrewarding job, but that is just my opinion.
  5. I totally understand how you feel. I go to a community college that has about 2000 students, 800-1000 of which are trying to get into the nuirsing program. We dont have a wiating list. The best grades get in. This last year was so competitive. If you didnt have a 4.0 or real close, you could just hang it up. the reality is though thta it is not healthy to constantly beat yourself up. I started the program this year and by the end of the first week I was already feeling the stress, so I just decided that I worked too hard to get here, for me not to enjoy it. Relax. Work hard, but always remember a task oriented person does not always make the best nurse. The grades will still come.

  7. I did a report on anesthetic awareness not too long ago. Pretty scary stuff. what is even more intriguing though is that there is no change in heart rate or any other vital signs when this happens. you figure the sheer terror would cause some increase.
