to nursejilly2005..... Pay depends on what agency you go with, Trustaff mainly staffs ST Thomas while Worldwide Mainly staff St Croix. From what I heard from my friends on STT(st thomas) was that pay was in mid $30's. I went there as staff and my wage was $23/hr. (For 5 years exp w/ ADN). I am now going back but as a traveler to STX(st croix) with worldwide and my wage is decent and the housing is way lower on STX than STT, plus now is the time to go because it is not tourist season so you can find your home housing pretty cheap. I would suggest finding housing on a safari route and then rent a car on the weekends or on your day off. I have heard many of my friends say that they had to dip into their saving to make it through their contract. Also I suggest if you do secure a contract on either island that you fly down and secure a private mailbox, go to the grocery store and Kmart and see the prices for what you use regularly and then go home, go to wal mart and have those items shipped to your box on island(throw in a few books to get the book rate at post office). HELP!!! I am due to start on STX 5/16. where exactly is the hospital? What housing is close to it and how are the working conditions in relation to STT (just left RLS...quite an experience). Is the hospital on STX traveler friendly? Any info would be [email protected]

I have been an RN for 6 years now, my first job in 2005 in the Durham NC area was $18/hr plus diff. I have been traveling for last 4 years and have found that the avg pay is about $35-40 hour nation wide. In CT I made $40/hr as agency house sup and $30 as new grad RN in ER. In CA I have a staff job in the "valley" making $42/hr with $4.80 shift diff for 7p shift. My agency pays me $45/hour now diff. My travel assignment have avg around the $40/hour range also. I took a staff job on St Thomas for $23/hr and the travelers were making $34/hr. While some places (like San Francisco) pay $50/60/70 hr, these jobs are most likely PD with no benefits in a very high cost of living area. As an RN where ever you live you will get paid enough to live comfortably based on your area cost of living. Just like any other profession if you want extra things you will have to work OT. Just like any other profession your pay will also be based on specialty, advanced certifications, and or an advanced degree. For me as a single mom with 2 years of college working ER/ICU bedside, $40/hr is not too bad. If I want more $$ then I will go back to school, get my Masters and obtain a few more advanced certifications.
