first night on new job!
sounds like you are doing wonderfully well, the fact that you worked short and really was not getting oriented but put right in the fire, which is not unusual in our field, and you still are upbeat tells me that you have what it takes to do this job well and to do it so that your patients benefit. as for my neck of the woods, it's cold and white, we had a nice little blizzard while i was gone to vegas. had to drive from oklahoma city to northeast corner of oklahoma and it took us 8 hrs to make a 3 hr trip. driving was so stressfull , had to stop twice for power naps. even the truckers were pulled over and the toll booths were closed, thats how slick it was, thanks for asking. good luck with your job . sincerely ronna

I'm curious to see what kind of advice you will receive as I also get floated around, I was sent to Womens Health a couple of weeks ago. The nurses wanted me to take patients. I'm a little bit of everything except ER and labor and delivery, so, to tell you the truth, I forgot how to assess a newborn, my last newborn was in school in 1992. How do you find a fundus when the mom has a vertical incision, I forgot. Who is liable, I don't want to be unless I know what I'm doing. I had never even been to the floor since renovations, didn't even know where anything was. What do we do next time we have to take care of pts that we are not trained to take care of. It scares me.

first night on new job!
Congrats on your new job! Your so lucky that you are familiar with the hospital. It will be easier for you, you'll know where some things are, it's awful not to know where things are, like a simple ice machine for pt ice water. You have friends there who will be a great support instead of everyone being strangers. All new nurses are nervous and scared, if they were not, I'd be afraid for them and thier patients. There is no way u can learn everything in school, education continues every day u work and start today at 3 PM, good luck, your gonna do great. Be very proud of yourself, hold your head high, smile, shoulders back and strut without wiggling your butt , ha ha. Let us know how your night went, okay? okay

Thank you so very much for your support, some people just never ever get it, no matter how many times or how many different ways you explain it. Thanks from Ronna

As an outsider, looking in, you are blind as a bat. You think that nurses need to be less "uptight"!!!! I wonder how layed back and chilled you would like the nurse that was taking care of your loved one that was in cardiac or resp arrest. I can promise you she won't be taking a bathroom break, you should apologize and sympathy does not change a thing. signed Ronna, sorry, but now you've given me a headache and my cheeks are red

Your Favorite one liner used with patients
When I have a patient who likes to joke around, and has just has a really good BM, only nurses want to know color, size shape and consistency, I tell them that they just had a baby and we can name it "Little Sh-t"

I have a confession to make. Do you wonder why I have so much time to read these forums and threads? Because I cant make myself go to work. After 13 years of nursing, doing everything except ER, helped deliver 2 babies, I'm scared to death. I think about work every minute of the day. I look at the clock to see how much more time I have before I have to clock in. My anxiety grew so that it has overtaken me, which has caused depression, or the other way around, now I need a trip to the psych. and have seen a counselor. Suck it up and get on with it, I have for the past year and I'm tired. But not dead. I've taken necessary steps to get my head out of my ---- and get on with life. My life is nursing and I'm not gonna let them get away with taking it away from me. I can actually talk about it today without total breakdown. See, I'm getting better already, could be medication too, not really what I wanted but there are chemical imbalances ya know, ha ha, well, not really funny but. I don't have to work for a while so I can quite worrying about where to put the leads, how to push Cordarone and how to start an IV when your trembling. Ok, I'm finished for now, thanks for listening Ronna I hope nobody I know reads this, my name is not really that common.

It also seems as if the younger, newer nurses see some nurses , like myself, negative and part of the problem. I do have negative vision right now, it comes and goes, but mostly stays as I usually have head trauma from beating my head against the wall. I don't want young nurses to be like me. I want you to be proud, stand up tall, push out your chest, pull your shoulders back and tell yourself that you are going to do some wonderful things today, I want to be encouraging, but it also feels really good to get out the bad stuff sometimes, and this forum is bout the best outlet I got. Nurses are leaving because they, as human beings, can only take so much for so long without a break. Our patients are much more critical than they used to be. The hospital floor is like a circus with a door that goes round and round. One gets off, two get on. I can remember when I had a patient that was admitted for headaches. She would usually stay about 2 weeks, now thats an easy patient. Most patients are not easy anymore, they are very, very ill, and I myself, don't feel as if I do them justice as there are not enough seconds or minutes in the day to do the things I would like to do for my people. I can't remember the last time I was able to so something nice like curl someones hair, do nails or even a back rub, thats my opinion, at least today. It changes daily. Somedays I'm more angry about what other people have turned my hard earned profression into. Overloaded paper pushers who are in charge of everything that goes on in the unit, even making sure the Doctors do thier thing. geezzz, I almost feel better now. Ronna
