  1. Hey School Nurses. What's your districts policy when it comes to ending Meal Accommodations for food allergies? Does your district require a PCP note stating student is no longer allergic or do you simply take the parents word?
  2. A minute into the school day, the mother of a student calls and states: "I just dropped XX off. She said she has a sore throat. Can you swab her?" No. No I can't.

My most dreaded office visit. How do you deal with them? I always start with a temp check, listen for bowel sounds, palpate, then ask about most recent meal, gas, n/v and feel like I'm just pacifying more than anything - but what I really want to do is just send them home hah.
  4. In the grand scheme of things it might have been insignificant, but it was the first moment where you thought, dang I got this! Mine was when an MD started a pt on Lasix whose potassium had been steadily declining. Just called and asked him if he wanted to order some supplemental potassium. I was his favorite nurse after that. Every time I had his pt he'd say, "aww you've always got my back!"
  5. Haha I did think about some kind of tubing or implant, but the student denied any procedures. Not to say she hasn't had any, but she denied it and it's not in her medical hx. Her father didn't speak English well and he kind of just kept saying, "oh okay okay..." I wish I had handled this interaction better.
  6. Admittedly I haven't looked in a ton of ears. A kiddo came into the nurse's office today complaining of ear pain. I looked into her ear and saw what looked like a tiny lightbulb, one of those clear ones where you can see the coils. I initially thought a tiny sliver of metal or something, but then when I looked in the other ear, same thing!! I know the eardrum should reflect light, but this didn't just look like a typical reflection...but again, I haven't looked into a ton of ears. She has been to the doctor for ear pain before and nothing has ever turned up. It's fairly obvious upon inspection so I can't imagine others would have missed something so blatant. I feel silly sending her to the ER for what may end up being a perfectly normal ear. I ultimately ended up calling the father and letting him know that there was possibly a foreign object in her ear and to have her checked out. What's your experience with this?
  7. I'm a Home Health Nurse. I just got an email from the office saying I often come in too early (10 minutes) and leave too late (10 minutes). They cited an instance when I left 20 minutes late. Is the following response to their email too snarky? "I will make more of an effort to not arrive early to my shift and to not stay late. I will also call the office the next time me leaving at the scheduled time results in the vent-dependent, pediatric patient being left alone." Too passive-aggressive? I swear this company I work for is a joke. I don't think anyone in the office knows how anything works in the home. One guess who I work for...
  8. What are some common critical thinking scenario questions that I can expect during an interview? Any help is appreciated :)
  9. The textbook that I was assigned is WAY over my head [Medical-Surgical Nursing by Lewis, Heitkemper, Dirksen, O'Brien, and Bucher]. Do you recommend any book in particular that can help me understand some of these concepts better? I've tried NCLEX review books, and while those are a little helpful, they are a little too vague. I'm looking for something detailed but written in plainer language. Thanks!
  10. Where can I get a job? I'm willing to go to Africa if I need to I just want to start working! I need to get some work experience!
  11. This might sound stupid, but why is a fever a contraindication for getting a flu shot? We were taught to take a temperature first but we were never told WHY.
  12. I just got a letter in the mail saying that I have been awarded a license. I wanted to frame my license and take a picture with it to include in my ''thank you'' notes from graduation, but this does NOT look for ''license-cy''. Does anyone else have a Washington State license and does it look like this?
  13. Thanks guys. Yeah did the trick lol It wouldn't let me pay.
  14. If you can pay Pearson Vue $8 to get the quick unofficial results, are there OFFICIAL results that they mail to you? Or does that come from your nursing board? I just took mine on Tuesday, pretty sure I got my last question right, checked my nursing boards website and it said my license was pending, checked it yesterday morning and it switched to active! So I'm pretty sure I passed, and I don't want to pay $8 if they're going to send me official results. Anyone know? Thanks, Oh yeah, I'm in Washington State.
