Tremors in Hands
What a great post! I am working on my prereqs and I was just diagnosed w/benign familial tremor and was wondering if there was any point in me even continuing. I don't shake much at this point unless I am stressed, and I figured was I am in nursing school and after graduation it will be nothing but stress. It is good to hear from those of you who are dealing with this problem successfully. Kim

Muscular Dystrophy
Jennifersusan, I think it is wonderful that you have devoted your time and efforts to the MDA. You are an angel! I feel bad, I remember always watching the telethon thinking "that's really sad, I'm glad that's not MY family" It's sad that a lot of people (especially ME) wait until it happens to them before they get involved. I plan to get involved with the MDA and doing some fundraising and volunteering myself. God bless you!!! Kim

Muscular Dystrophy
Hi Vicky, Thank you so much for the reply. He has been set up with a physical therapist at the MDA clinic, and I think there is another one that will be coming to the house. As I mentioned, he has very delayed milestones, for example he has just now learned to sit up on his own at 18 mos. The therapist is hoping to have him standing within six months. I do hope he is able to learn to walk, if only for a time. I know this disease does not usually show up until about 2-6 years old, so we are not sure why he is showing signs so early. Thanks again for the info. Kim

Muscular Dystrophy
Good morning everyone. I am a prenursing student and while I don't post very often I read these boards everyday. I have gotten some very valuable information from all of you. Anyway, a few days ago my 18 month old grandson was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We have no family history of this disease. I was wondering if any of you have worked with kids with this disease? Do you have any advice for caring for him? Right now he just seems like a normal baby, except for his milestones have been very delayed. His mother (my daughter) is only 19 years old, so this is really going to be difficult for her and I would like to be able to help as much as I can. Thanks so much, Kim

Understanding medical lingo
I forgot to mention that the "Exploring Medical Language" came with flash cards and cassettes to help you with pronunciation. Hope this helps:) Kim

Understanding medical lingo
Michelle, I just finished a medical terminology class which was a prereq for my community college. We used the book "Exploring medical language" by Myrna LaFleur Brooks. Maybe you could pick one up cheap from Amazon or something like that, and work through it. I think it was a very helpful workbook. Good luck!:)

When do the pre classes END!!!!!
I can totally relate! I started prereqs 13 years ago, then quit when I became pregnant and was never financially able to go back until last fall. I work full time so i'm doing my prereqs online but only have time to do two classes at a time. It is taking me longer because I basically had to start with basic math and work my way up to algebra because I did not remember any of it:o Unfortunately algebra is a prereq to chem, and chem is a prereq to other classes so I am trying to get the math out of the way first. That's okay though, I will get through it sooner or later (probably later!)

38 too old for school?
I am 36 and just started my second semester of prereqs. I enrolled last summer on my birthday as a gift to myself. I work full time and have three kids. I started classes about 12 or 13 years ago but due to family and money issues could not continue. I have regretted every day since then that I didn't finish. It really never occurred to me until last year that I could still do it. Finally one day I realized that like everybody says, I am going to be the same age whether I do this or not, that is what really inspired me to go for it. I don't want to spend the rest of my life with regrets so I am on my way! You can do it too. Best of luck:) Kim

Anyone want to share why nursing has been a POSITIVE career choice for you?
Thank you everyone, it is really refreshing to read a positive post. I am a pre nursing student and there have been many times when I felt like giving up my dream due to all the negative things I read about nursing. But I just have this strong desire to be a nurse that never goes away. Reading the positive things really helps me feel that this is the right decision.:)

Rio Salado
I am taking Algebra and Med. Terminology this semester. I did math and PSY101 last semester. So far I really like it. Since I work full time there is no way I would be able to go to a class, and this lets me work ahead if I want to. Good luck to everyone :)

Use of IUD- opinions wanted
I am on my second IUD now. I got pregnant 8 years into my first. (was supposed to be good for 10 years). I can't take the pill or any hormone based birth control, so I still consider it a good option for me. When I got my first one, I had extremely heavy periods and severe cramping for several months. Once your body is used to it though you should not even notice it. Good luck!

Considering Nursing school, need advice
Thanks for the encouragement healinghand. You summed it up perfectly "The desire to do SOMETHING with my life". I have worked at the same job for over ten years and I feel like I am just wasting my life. I know I can do it, and knowing that all of you are here for support makes it a little less intimidating. :) Thanks! Kim

Considering Nursing school, need advice
Thanks everyone. Karen, I was definitely planning on distance learning, I think that will be the only way I can make it. I should do well with that, I am pretty good about working on my own. Kim

Considering Nursing school, need advice
Hi everyone, I am soon to be 36 years old, and seriously considering nursing school. I started about 12 years ago but do to financial reasons I didn't get far. Every day I regret not finishing. I work full time and have 3 kids. I was wondering if any of you went to school "Later in life" and if so how did you handle raising kids and holding a job while going to school? Quitting work is not an option, so I would love to hear from some of you who have done it. Thanks so much for your time, and have a great day everyone:) Kim
