  1. I'll try and be brief: This is my 2nd career (37 yo). Soon to be RN (May '14) with a BS in Hospitality Management years ago. I feel a pull towards psych nursing and would like to start at Austin State Hospital (ASH). I am driven to get my MSN in managment and possilby take on some leadership positions with the State of TX in this great city of Austin. I'd like to use ASH as a stepping stone to maybe a community health/management position. I love patient care, but don't see doing it 20+ years in any capacity a good long term goal. Is it realistic to think i could expand my opportunities with the state by becoming a state employee at ASH? Anyone that's worked there- please share all good and bad aspects. I've got thick skin and the right attitude. Just don't want to be too far down the path and realize I should have taken the med-surg route. Thanks for reading..
  2. Thanks Brooke! I've heard roughly the same - Vitals are almost always inlcuded and it varies depending on the semester and/or campus. More curious on the timing. I know most of my questions will be answered on Wednesday, but after a 2 year wait these last few days and weeks seem to be creeping by.
  3. Does anyone know exactly what the 1st skills checkoff for Level 1 entails and when it is going to be done?
  4. Has anyone heard back yet from ACC re: the campus you will be attending for Level 1? I'm also curious if any one knows if its ok to start our background checks, or do we need a new and seperate email.
  5. Congrats to all of you that got in, and I do empathize with those who didn't. I did get in!! This is my 2nd attempt so I do know how both groups feel. It really seems that this program has gotten so much more competitive- even compared to a year ago. More 2nd careers and less teachers does not bode well. I'm looking forward to getting back to the grind, so anyone wants a partner for skills practice or prep in general- let me know. I've almost commented enough on here to get DM status. Good Luck to All!!
  6. According to ACC ADN website the letters and rankings will be sent out "this week." Good Luck to everyone. I''m just looking forward to the peace of knowing how my summer and fall will actually be spent.
  7. I've already taken nursing skills, but was curious if anyone has heard when they are sending out final rankings and/or invitations for nursing school. This has to be the longest 4-8 weeks of my life. I'm draining my phone by compulsively checking gmail.
  8. Thanks for all the feedback. It's good to get a first hand perspective to such a big decision and 2 year commitment. @ Purkinje @RADIATION - I'll keep my mind open as regards to hybrid. Did you find the clinicals more concentrated up north, or did occasionally a few folks get placed central or south. I have to say, the interview and job placement aspect has me intrigued. I know everyone is different, but do you find the "learn on your own" model easy navigate. Is is pretty structured where the seminars highlight test materials? Thanks for all the help and insight. Sorry for all these random questions. Just hoping to make the best informed decision possible.
  9. I've got 2 questions for you Level 1 ACC students. First of all, congrats on getting in. I am anxiously awaiting "THE" email and hoping my 61.14 is enough to get me in this 2nd time around. 1) I am torn between CEC and EVC. I wouldn't mind doing Hybrid, but live in South South ATX and don't even want to imagine that commute. Can any current students give me insight - Pros and Consof the EVC and CEC campuses. 2)) I'll be over a year removed from finishing pre-reqs when I start back school in the Fall. Can you recommend what materials (Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology) would be the most beneficial to read up on? Thanks in advance. Hope to see you guys on campus and at clinicals soon!!
  10. Misery loves Company!!! Glad to know I'm not alone sweating out this nursing school thing. I've taken all pre/co-reqs and am currently enrolled in Nursing Skills. I applied last semester and was short and am hoping the 2nd time is the charm. Does anyone know how many applicants they are accepting this time?
  11. Thanks Jack and NYTexan.
  12. I hope you all made it and are enjoying your first year of nursing school. I am applying to be in the Spring '12 class. I am curious what the exact cut off was last year to get in. This is my first attempt so I know the odds are against me, but want to know if I have a fighting chance. Thanks for any insight.
  13. Has anyone taken the HESI at ACC? I have it in a few days and am just curious what kind of questions are on it. Primarily, the A&P sections. Any input would be great.
  14. Thanks Anna. I'm right in that 51-53 range (assuming A's this and next semester), so just trying to get a grip on what my realites really are.
