First job as an RN
Hi Everyone :) So I am an IEN working in Canada. This is my first job since graduating which would be nerve wracking enough but doing it in a whole different country is real tough. I've been in the job for about 10 months now but I haven't had a probationary interview or learning review or any real discussion with my manager about if I'm doing ok So I figure that I must be doing ok, the patients seem to like me andthere have been several thank you cards with a specific mention to me. I guess what worries me is that there is a lot of gossiping and back stabbing in the place I work and if the Unit Leader doesn't like you then she can make life awkward. I started doing permanent nights after an MVA and have to do days this weekend for the first time in a while. I'm already a little nervous about this as it's a totally different routine etc. Plus I was injured in work last week (pt crushed my wrist the one I hurt in the MVA of course :yelclap:) and am supposed to be on light duties but despite this over the weekend the unit lead is insisting I stay on the floor rather than be unit leader on the desk because she is more friendly with one of the other new grads who started at the same time as me Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I am finding that any confidence I had gained is being chipped away at. I get a few days and I think things are going ok and the second I make a mistake, no matter how big or small, my confidence is shattered. I can't approach the unit leader because every time I attempted it in the past she has brushed me off. How do I get my confidence on a steadier level? And any advice about how to deal with a gossipy workplace?

Any nurses out there graduate knowing everything?
So long as you know your basic anatomy and physiology then the way I see it is that you can understand what can go wrong. Know what the "right" way of something working is and you can understand the wrong. A lot comes with experience but no one in the real world will expect you to know everything as a new grad, you will be expected to ask questions and to be learning. Experience takes time to get, and you will be surprised at how much experience you already have through your clinical placements.

Any nurses out there graduate knowing everything?
Hey I just started my first job and I am carrying a drug guide in my pocket to check my meds, and taking 3 times longer it seems than any of the more senior nurses. I loved my placements but found I was overwhelmed at exam time, but I got through it. I love my new job and everyone is really supportive and lets me know its ok not to know everything as long as I ask questions when I'm not sure. Nursing is the type of profession where you will never know everything, we are all constantly learning and that is ok :)

baccalaureate equivalency table from CNO
It took me from Nov 2010- Sept 2011 to go through the entire process, from applying to getting full registration. I started working yesterday and am loving it :)

baccalaureate equivalency table from CNO
I phoned them and asked and they said you do NOT need to list the competencies you are demonstrating after your scenario as they will see which competencies you are demonstrating when they read and assess it

Are you an IEN? It's definately worth checking into the deadlines!!

In that case it really is up to you. When is the deadline for the October exam? You wouldn't want to miss it if the rescoring by hand comes up with the same result if that makes sense Very difficult decision though *hugs*

It's up to you, how much did you fail by (if you don't mind me asking) When is the deadline to resit? I think here in Ontario it's the 24th June in which case I personally would probably rather apply to resit rather than waste time on a hand scoring which would probably push me over the deadline so I'd have to wait until Feb to resit Hasn't it been said on here that if it's a really close call then they are hand scored anyway to double check the accuracy of results before mailing? Or was I imagining that?

I'm sorry Denzo I don't really have any advice specifically, perhaps use a wider variety of books to study from. Was it a time problem? Did you manage to finish the whole exam? Which province are you in? There is a compendium on the CNO's website which consists of all the legislation relating to nursing in Ontario

Would be nice if they managed to get them out by the 13th, keeping my fingers crossed but I know they're busy so being a realist probably not until after the 13th. Oh well *sets up camp next to the post box*

Nursing in Canada?
You can apply to the CNO at any point you want to, however if you apply and your qualifications are not equivilant to the Canadian qualifications you will be declined the opportunity to take the exam and would have to pay again to be reassessed once you have done the IELTS. It might be worth doing the IELTS earlier if you can and then apply before you arrive. If you have a permanent residency visa then yes I believe you can work in a lower position before you are registered. In order to write the CRNE you have to be eligible to register with the CNO which means fulfilling all other requirements. Take a look at their website

Nursing in Canada?
You can apply to the CNO in advance, they will assess you, see my previous reply on this thread. The application pack is available online, it took me 6 months to be assessed so start as soon as you can!!
