  1. Are there laws stating the maximum amount of hours allowed to be worked in a day? I have searched and searched and cannot find anything state or federal stating so. I live in North Carolina. Only things that state, must be paid overtime past 40 hours in a week, must have at least 8 hours to sleep before next shift, etc.

That's what they have planned for me so far.
  4. Send a card ASAP after interview. I've always been told that managers are impressed when you do that
  5. I have an ambien prescription because I use to have sleep onset insomnia, it was a miracle worker in nursing school. But now I tend to sleep too much, and I have some rather not so welcome effects while being on it, so I don't take it anymore. Everything else makes me feel so groggy. Although I did try this neuro sleep drink, nasty, but it helped. I just try to shy away from pharmacological solutions because I taken enough as it is. I have been taking melatonin, but even with it the least bit of noise wakes me up.
  6. I don't mean to sound ungrateful at all, I am very grateful that my parents still allow me to live under their roof rent free. They are amazing and have been with me every step of my journey. I'm just not in a position to be on my own yet. I'll have to try the earplugs it was a great suggestion. And I'm currently looking for small houses to rent (I don't think I could handle an apartment or roommates). And the local hotels won't generally rent to locals, and the cheaper ones aren't well kept or is try that. We do have a basement, which I may temporarily use until I get a place. Thank you all!
  7. I have a very varying schedule at my current job. I work part-time both 4p-12a and 12a-8a. And switch between the two fairly often. As most normal people, when I work nights I sleep during the day, and during the week it's generally not a problem (other than the fact that my body doesn't feel I need sleep during the day). Now, I'm 22 and still live with my parents. It's during the weekends that it is a HUGE problem, they do not respect that I am trying to sleep and do a lot of noisy things even though I have asked them many times to refrain. It's hard enough to try to force your body to sleep when it doesn't want to, but then to make noise and be disruptive doesn't help. What can I do? I've talked to them but it just doesn't seem to register. And moving out is not currently an option, will be once I get full time at a new job I just got, but there's no telling when that will be. I need advice

I just received a job offer for a PRN icu position at my local 86-bed acute care hospital. The ICU is general with 8 beds, one pediatric but rarely gets filled. Orientation is Sept 5th. I've been a nurse for a little over 2 years now but never in a hospital setting. I have 15 months in long term care, and currently am working with home health for 8 months. My home health client is a 19 month trach/vent patient, which is the total reason I got the icu job. Any advice for working in a general icu?
  9. I was in your position a year ago, I now have my year of experience and want into a hospital and am not having any luck whatsoever with job prospects. I almost feel "tainted" in a way which is sad. I want to work L&D, kids, mother/baby and I feel that's the way I'm viewed. I've put in 20+ applications with no luck so good luck with yours!
  10. I also have signed up for an Advanced life support in obstetrics class to help my chances... Still looking for ACLS, pals and nrp
  11. My dream ever since wanting to become a nurse was to become a labor and delivery nurse. Well here I am a nurse finally, I graduated in 2012 at the ripe old age of 20 got my RN and applied for a bunch of jobs and got the answers "you need a year of nursing experience then we'll talk". Finally I got an interview at a local nursing home and got a job offer and where I have worked for a year. Well now I am ready to pursue my dream, L&D nurse! Problem? I've put in probably 20+ applications and they all say that I need a years experience before they'll look at me. How am I supposed to do that??? I am so frustrated and depressed it makes me want to cry. LTC is something I never wanted to do again because I did it as a CNA in high school and it made me miserable and I am absolutely miserable now. I feel like now no hospital will look at me especially a L&D unit because I'm "tainted" by LTC. Any and all advice on how to get my foot in the door of the perinatal world would be wonderful! Sincerely, Devon
  12. I just graduated from school in may and got my license in June of last year, I also just turned 21 in October. I work at a skilled nursing facility and have been working there since September. I have the problem of working with CNAs that are mostly older than me, so therefore a lot of them don't respect me. I ask them do to things (not all the time) that are with in their scope, I help out when I'm able, and I always try to be nice to everyone and have a smile on my face. Problem is that I feel like they don't have respect for me not want to listen to me, also have one that is an agency hired aide that gives me an attitude and talks behind my back 99% of the time she works. I'm just sick of it and don't know what to do. I just feel that those that give me problems (not anything I can report them for) don't take me seriously because I'm so young. What can I do? Are there other young nurses that have this problem???
  13. I want to stay at least 6 months, it's just not where i pictured myself working. I just get depressed seeing my residents pass away. I would much rather work at a hospital or clinic if I can get one. It just sucked that no one will hire someone with no experience.
  14. So I graduate from nursing school in may of 2012. I got my license in June of 2012 (RN). I wanted to take a little break before I got a job because I'm still taking general Ed classes so I can transfer to a 4-year university to work on my BSN. I had no intentions on getting a full time job until January. Well jobs were hard to find and after many applications were turned down I sucked it up and applied for a nursing home job. Unfortunately it was full time and I was going to school full time. But I made it through. I worked in a nursing home when I was a CNA and absolutely hated it. I only took the job because it was all that would give me a chance. Well I've been here 4 months and I am absolutely miserable. I love most of my residents but hate my job. I don't want to lose my benefits though because I'm working for an Indian reservation. I don't have a year of experience yet and I feel really guilty wanting to apply elsewhere, but at the same time I feel so overwhelmed and miserable at work. I keep trying to stick it out but I feel like I'm getting more and more depressed. Would it be bad to start applying other places? I really need advice!
  15. I suffer from MCTD (Mixed Connective Tissue Disease) and one of the symptoms of it is Raynaud's. I have a hard time finding pedal pulses, but my teachers told me to be patient about it, and when I couldn't find them (cause even on some people it's impossible to find without having decreased feeling in your fingers) then they let me use the doppler to find the pulse. I've also found that using other fingers or places on my fingers sometimes works better.
