  1. I'm an NP and applied for a similar program-the National Health Service Corps. My facility score is 17 (also tier 1) and my loan payments are outrageous!!! Over $1k a month! Unfortunately, my facility didn't qualify for the Nurse Corps program because we are a private hospital. I would have applied to both programs in hopes of at least getting approved for one. I pray I get the $$, it will be a huge help.
  2. Wow that's awesome! I thought they were only able to fund sites with a score of 14 and up? It even says that on their website. Good for you. Are you working full time or part time?
  3. No they are all listed. If you google NHSC Approved sites you should be able to find your state and a list of sites.
  4. You can look on the NHSC website and it will list your site and the score.
  5. Yes you need to have a job in a HPSA area (health professional shortage area) before applying. You can look on the NHSC website to see if a site in your area has any openings. If you are willing to relocate that would increase your chances even more. Good luck to you!
  6. Facility score is more important than loan balance. The higher the score the better.
  7. Application cycle for 2014 is now open again...who is applying? What is the HPSA score for your facility? Please share your story if you're applying or are a previous recipient. My facility score is 17 and I know of 2 other NPs that are receiving it right now that work with me. I heard last year they were unable to fund anything below 14. I really hope I get it as I have massive amounts of loans but I am worried as the competition is stiff!
  8. I am enrolled full time in a FNP program (13 credit hours) and working 3 12's a week. To be honest, I am about to go insane considering I have one day off per week to get caught up with school and other stuff. It can be done but I don't recommend it. I have kept this up since the program started this past June. I usually am assigned weekend, but have switched shifts with my coworkers to pick up more weekend days. This has helped me to free up time during the week for clinical hours. I will definitely be cutting back probably next semester just so I don't go crazy. Best of luck to you!!
  9. 1. what is your degree in? asn, will have bsn in a couple weeks...woot! 2. what state do you live in? midwest 3. what is your job title? staff rn...occasional charge nurse (50 cents more/hr for charge) 4. how much do you make an hour? i think a little over $20 with shift diff working nights 5. how much do you make a year? cleared right at $40k last year-this will go up slightly after my bsn 6. what do you like about your job? patient care (sometimes), my wonderful night shift co-workers, using critical thinking skills, fast-paced environment, keeping up with my nursing skills, feeling like i am making a difference 7. what don't you like about your job? patient care (sometimes), administrative bs decisions from people that have not stepped foot into a patient room in decades, drama from co-workers. leaving floor work to attend grad school this summer!!
  10. Congrats! I am getting ready to start my NP program this summer. I am very excited and very nervous!! Can't wait to be in your shoes.
  11. I work on a surgical heart and lung progressive care unit. We have "Cardiac Rehab" nurses who work with our CABG patients. Similar to physical therapy but with more nursing skills required. They help pts with heart disease or who have had heart surgery with ambulation, lifestyle changes, diet, etc. They all seem to really like their jobs. Just a thought!
  12. I am graduating with my BSN in a couple weeks. I attended a RN-BSN completion program through the same university where I obtained my ASN. It was all online and I took a full course load and got it done in a year. It wasn't fun but I'm so glad I pushed myself to get finished as fast as possible. Hopefully the online program you are considering caters to working RNs like mine did. There were a few clinical rotations required, but you set them up when/where it was convenient for you. I have always worked and gone to school my entire life, even during my ADN. So it was second nature to me to continue working while completing my BSN. It was a good decision for me and I think BSN prepared nurses are the direction that this profession is headed. Best of luck to you and congratulations on graduating!
