  1. Hi FutureCruzan, I had an interview last Friday in the Medical ICU. I came down from Massachusetts, and I am really glad that I did. If you are serious about relocating, definitely take the time to go down there and see what it is all about. I had never been to NC, so I was able to explore a little while I was down there. My interview lasted about 2 hours. The first hour I spent with the nurse manager and director. They asked me a a few behavioral questions (tell me about a time when you gave excellent customer service, how do you cope with stressful situations, what frustrates you, what are your weaknesses, what would past managers say about you) nothing too difficult. I had a lot of time to ask them questions in return (definitely take advantage of this!). The next hour was spent with some nurses on the floor. I was able to ask them a lot of questions. There was also a new grad on orientation and I was able to chat with her a little bit. Everyone was super nice and willing to answer my questions. I am so glad that I went down to interview. Really, I felt like this was more about me interviewing them rather than them interviewing me. They wanted to see if I was serious about working at Duke, and this interview gave me the opportunity to see if Duke would be a good fit for ME. They called me today to offer me a position!
  2. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to stay that is relatively close to the medical center? Can I take public transportation to the hospital? I am coming from Boston for an interview, and I don't know the area at all! Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
  3. Hi all! Congrats on your acceptance! I am in the ABSN class that started in may 12. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask away!
  4. I am beyond thrilled that i got accepted to this program!! Now that I have been accepted, Im starting to think about all the details and I'm a little worried about how to actually pay for this program! haha I know I'll find a way but I just can't imagine not working for a year. Is anyone going to be working while doing this?
  5. I'm hoping to hear by tomorrow!! I'm going crazy over here!!
  6. I know, i was wondering when someone would start talking about the May 2012 class. I know a few people that started this past May 2011, and their schedule is full time each semester. Probably full day of classes monday weds and fri then half days tues thurs or something like that. Not really sure what the daily schedule is like, I just know that they are busy haha. I don't think you register for classes, each cohort has set classes on set days. My friend said she had to take out about $55,000 in loans to pay for MGH. The school has a great reputation and I think it will be worth it in the end! What other programs did you apply to?
  7. I applied also. From what I've heard, we will probably hear around the beginning of Jan. Good Luck!
  8. CONGRATS on getting into nursing school!!! That's so exciting! Where will you be going? I love my job so far! I've had training everyday this week and I've already learned so much. The nurses are so helpful...since they know i'm a student they are willing to show me things. The Dr's are even going to let me into the OR to watch some procedures :) I hope your training is going well!
  9. Erindel, how was your orientation this week? I hope everything went well for you and you are excited about your job! I had my general hospital orientation this week and start on the floor monday! I really like my hospital so far; everyone is so nice! Well, I hope to hear from you.
  10. Think of it this way, you were interviewing her as well...and she gave you a very bad impression. You wouldn't want to work for someone like that, now would you? I'm sorry you had a bad interview; keep your head up and soldier on. She's only one person..don't let her get to you. Good luck with everything!
  11. Glad to help! I think you have a very good chance of getting in, especially if you are taking classes now. Are you applying for January 2012?? If you need help with anything feel free to message me. Good luck with everything!
  12. I got my first BS from Northeastern and I will be attending Umass Boston in the fall. They told me it will take me 3 years to complete as well. Personally, i thought my chances of getting into a traditional program were pretty good because I already had a degree, so that's why I opted for the traditional route. And I didnt really have any of the prereqs completed, so it probably would have taken the same amount of time as an accelerated program anyway. Do you have any specific programs in mind ??
  13. Thank You! I just found out that i got the job today !! I am BEYOND excited! I start May 2nd as well. I have actually been volunteering in recovery at a hospital on the North Shore but decided that I want to relocate closer to boston..Im going to nursing school in the fall. I totally agree that volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door. I don't think i would've gotten interviews if i didn't have that on my resume; especially since I have zero healthcare experience. Anyway, you'll have to keep me updated on your experiences at MGH! Good luck with everything :)
  14. Oh congrats on getting a job at MGH! I am currently waiting on a job as an NA in the PACU at south shore hosp in Weymouth. The wait is killing me. But anyway, have you started the job yet? I also volunteered in the recovery room and loved it so I am so excited to possibly work in pacu. I hope to hear about the new job and congrats again!
  15. I would want you to be my preceptor. Just sayin'. She is being the unprofessional one, and I think you are handling yourself well with how you react to her, because that would really upset me too! I would agree with the above posters in that maybe you should ask her if there was something that you did to offend her. Or, just keep doing what you are doing and ignore her. She sounds like a miserable person in general, and sometimes there is nothing you can do to change it. She's not worth your stress.
  16. I have a degree in something other than nursing, so I started volunteering at my local hospital to get some experience and to see if nursing was something i really wanted to do. I am literally starting from the ground up so I needed some sort of experience. I started volunteering at the hospital whilst taking a CNA course, and applied to some CNA/PCA jobs at the same hospital and HR contacted me right away! They even want to try to accommodate me while i'm in nursing school. So what Im trying to say is....it doesn't hurt to volunteer; especially If you have no experience in health care!
  17. does any one know what the application deadline (fall) for UMass Dartmouth is?! I'm stalking the website but can't find it anywhere!
  18. I'm taking my CNA class in the Boston area through the red cross, and love it. I just started the clinical portion today! It can be hard at times, and the instructors can be strict, but I truly believe it is because they want us to do well. I know by the end of my class I will be thankful that the instructors were tough. Overall, I recommend the red cross. The 4 week option is great too...get it done quick.
  19. I got my acceptance letter today as well. :) congrats PGD! good luck to anyone who is still waiting! I'll be crossing my fingers for you
  20. Just checked my status online. It says i should be receiving a letter in 14 days....
  21. yeah, my status still says its being reviewed and i should hear by march 15th.....so any day now! I will definitely let you know when I hear :) I'm applying as a transfer student; however, this is my second degree. If i don't get in to the traditional program i will apply for the accelerated. What about you?
  22. Hi! I have applied for the Fall 2011, though I have not gotten a letter yet. I check my online status pretty much everyday, but nothing yet. AHhhh I hate waiting. I'm assuming you haven't heard yet?? :/
  23. I actually wish more Boston Hospitals would offer internships like this! The pay is low, yes, but the experience is priceless!
