  1. It's not just Everest. There are plenty of for-profit colleges out there that are just waiting for people to sign up for classes. Just turn on the TV and you will see ad after ad for college degrees from multiple schools. Google search people who have spent thousands of dollars on degrees that aren't accredited and can't get jobs. Remember, student loans aren't like regular loans. You can't get rid of them by filing bankruptcy. It is on you to investigate your school and make sure you are making a good investment.
  2. In my city the nursing homes don't usually call us for DNR's. If they are working the code or the pt's not a DNR then they call us unless it's an obvious death. We usually fill out a death report and give it to PD upon their arrival. Just makes their job a little easier since most of the patient information is on it. If EMS is called then PD is also dispatched in our city. The opposite is not true. For example, if we get called for a trauma (gun shot, suicide attempt, etc) and the pt has injuries incompatible with life then PD will clear us prior to us ever seeing the patient. That being said every city and county can have different rules. If your want a concrete answer then have a nursing supervisor call the PD department and ask what their policy is.
  3. My EMS system has been doing IO's for a long while, but we just got the drill about two years ago. We will usually put them in after the first failed attempt on an IV during a cardiac arrest. I actually put one in last week on an obese 43 y/o female that had a PE. Humeral placement in less then 10 secs. Love the drill compared to manual placement. You just have to be careful on ped's because once the drill bites it has a tendency to pull itself in with little to no pressure being exerted by the technician. There is a video circulating around that shows IV and IO infusions under fluro with contrast. It's impressive.
  4. That question was answered during the information session. The director stated that the BSN is accepted by ODU but after you meet the additional chem req. Sentara's program requires Chem 1 while ODU requires chem 1 & 2. So essentially you would have to take chem 2 before enrolling in a Master's program. Of course I haven't verified this with ODU yet so take that information with a grain of salt.
  5. I also didn't get accepted. Overall GPA of 3.1 something. Pre requisite GPA of 3.8+. The only pre reqs that I didn't get A's in were Eng 111 and Intro to Psych. I got B's for those two in the mid 90's. I've emailed the interim director four times now to get a face to face meeting without success. From what I can gather they just looked at overall GPA and threw out everyone less then a 3.4. The points system doesn't seem to hold water. I got a 15/16 and know of at least 3 students with lower points, but higher GPA's that got in. I get an A in micro, a&p 1-2 but someone with a higher GPA and C's in the science courses gets in? Doesn't make sense to me. When I got my denied letter I was not happy. After thinking it over and replaying all of the snippy emails and condescending phone calls I had to endure from the administration, I can't say I'm really angry anymore about not getting accepted. I'm now more angry about how unprofessional the administration has acted and continues to act. The only thing I'm trying to decide now is how hard to shake the tree. On another note I went to an information session for Sentara's BSN program and couldn't believe the difference in attitude. Everyone actually seemed.....happy. More then willing to answer questions, review transcripts, etc. Of course there are more pre reqs, and it costs more money then TCC... but you come out of it with your BSN.
  6. My wife and I had both kids at Chesapeake General. We also had a Midwife who was awesome, but was on vacation for both births:P OB delivered babies, nurses were great and my wife was very well taken care of.
  7. Congrats on your letter. Does any know if we need to send in an updated copy of our transcripts? i.e. turning another set of transcripts in with spring semester grades on them?
  8. Book off work just means that you call out of work, use a sick day. The original Canadian poster really wants his credentials acknowleged beside his name. I don't understand how not adding RN credentials to someone's name in a letter is showing disrespect to the individual or the nursing profession. Seems thin-skinned to me. Probably just me though, what do you guys think?
  9. If this is the professor you have then this is what you need. Good luck! http://www.tcc.edu/faculty/webpages/MMitchell/index.htm
  10. Called the Alabama Department of Education. They very kindly informed me that they were sorry but would be unable to help me. Sigh, if I had known I was going to have to take the GED I could have skipped my high school years and partied:crying2:
  11. Thank you for the advice. Talking to someone for the board of education will be hard since I live in Virginia and graduated HS in Alabama. Sending them an email and going in person to talk to the nursing school admissions person. Hopefully one of the two will come through for me.
  12. I graduated from a private high school in 1993 which is no longer around. I have a copy of my old high school transcript, but the nursing program will only take a "certified" copy. I have been through the usual routes, i.e. calling the school district, and was told that a bunch of paper records had been lost, and mine was one of them. I emailed Admissions for the nursing program and told them of my situation, even letting them know that I'm a current student at the college. I've got over 50 credits there, including my Paramedic. The Admissions lady emailed me back with one sentence. "We require a copy of your 'certified' transcripts. Anyone with any suggestions? Should I show up there in person and talk to a 'live' person? The only problem with that is that I'm afraid I'll say something...not so nice...if they tell me they can't help me. Thank you in advance.
  13. Likewise, no group projects or anything online at the chesapeake campus. At least not when I took them last semester.
  14. Sorry, haven't heard anything (or attended any classes) about the Norfolk campus classes or professors. Maybe someone else who has attended that campus can answer? you can always type their names into ratemyprofessors.com. Just don't take everything you read to heart.
  15. I'm not 100% on this, but from my understanding your lecture and lab have be at the same campus. You don't need the same instructors, but same campus. When you sign up for the class online it prompts you to pick the corresponding lab/lecture at that campus. i.e. I sign up for a lab at chesapeake campus on Tuesday's. The next screen tells me I need to sign up for the lecture and gives me the available class schedule for that campus only. Hope this helps.
