Seed implants and holding children
My father recently had seed implants for his prostate ca and one of the warnings is to not hold children which he is aware of. He lives a fairly long distance away and doesn't see his grandchildren (my children) often. He was over for Thanksgiving a few days ago and wanted to hold them all and they very much wanted him to since they don't see each other often. They are ages 2, 4, and 6. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to make everybody feel bad but what are the real risks of doing this?? If they are on his lap for 5 minutes or so here and there is it a huge problem?? I feel like the bad cop here but on the other hand I don't want my kids having problems down the line either.

new grad and home care
Due to child care reasons I am contemplating leaving my full time (5 day/wk) position as an RN in the hospital I work at and possibly doing 2 - 12 hour days there on the weekends only. I am a new grad and have about 4 months of experience. I am thinking of picking up a few hours in the evenings when my husband is home to watch the kids doing home care as an LPN since I don't have the experience to work as an RN. Does anyone have any comments on doing this or should I rethink things a little more??

timing of meds
I am a new grad and have a question that I haven't been able to get answered. If you have a pt who needs a pain med such as Dilaudid and also asks for a sleeping pill such as Restoril should you wait a certain amount of time after giving the Dilaudid before giving the Restoril? No two people have the same answer and this pops up fairly frequently. One seasoned RN said to wait at least an hour several others said they don't wait at all. I prefer the wait awhile to be on the safe side but there are a lot of daring rangers out there that I work with that don't seem to think there is an issue (CNS depression etc)

diabetics
I need some advice from some of you experienced nurses out there on diabetes. We sometimes have diabetic patients who get covered and then when their meal comes don't feel like eating, vomit after a few bites, ask for seconds, don't want their bed time snack, want more of a bed time snack etc. I haven't had any clear cut answers on how to handle these situations and would like some input. What else can be offered for a snack other than the usual graham crackers and milk when somebody doesn't want this? Also, for someone receiving Lantus, do you need to do a BGT before giving this?? Any other advice on this from the trenches would be appreciated.

how do you delegate to techs?
I've also had a problem with some of the nursing assistants. Most that have given me problems are on the day shift -I work 3-11. I worked 3-11 for about 10 months as a nursing assistant on the same unit I am now an RN on and the na's on my own shift all knew I was in school and were very supportive and still are. I was off for family leave for a couple months before I came back as an RN and had to start my orientation on day shift for a month. The first day I walked in all of the na's on day shift just about fell over. I suppose they weren't aware that I was in school?? Not sure. I never had to deal with them because I never worked days. I just saw them when I was coming in and they were leaving. To make a long story short many of them were very smart alecky with me and just all around gave me a hard time when I asked them to do something (that they should be doing anyway). I tried being super nice, thank them profusely for tiny things, and just all around bending over backwards for them. Most of them by the end of my month on that shift had pretty much "gotten over" my new position, except one woman who continues to give me grief at every opportunity. She still refuses to return a greeting and if I happen to offer some casual chit chat to her she just looks at me and walks away. Sometimes I think I would be better off on another floor where I didn't work with the same people I did in the lower position.

new grad and home care
I would like some advice from some of you hospice veterans out there. I am a new grad and upon the advice of many people reluctantly decided that I needed that year or two of med surg experience before I could ever expect to be hired to do anything else. I am on a busy med surg floor and pretty much hate it. Everything is at such a fast pace that I feel it would be only too easy to make a mistake due to not having enough time to think about anything enough. Plus there is never time to spend with the patients. I am 45 years old and came to nursing from another career because I wanted a more "humane" career but it hasn't struck me as such. I have a friend who works at an in house hospice facility and loves it. Unfortunately this is a very small unit and the turnover is low. They do need home care people desperately though and are hiring new grads. My question is would a new grad have the skills and whatever to be out in the field on their own?? Another friend of mine who just graduated with me started out doing this (in a neighboring county - different organization) and hated it - and quit after a few weeks. She had a boss that was totally unsupportive and would riducule her in front of the entire office. She is urging me not to make the jump but I'm wondering if her experience with the boss would be clouding her views of it all. At any rate what type of experience, if any, would I need for hospice home care?? Does anybody have any views on not getting med surg experienc for this or anything else for that matter??

pearson quick results
I took the NCLEX yesterday and have been logging onto the quick results site about 20 times a day (well maybe that's an exageration!) and all that is there is future appointments and recent appointments. Past exam info isn't there yet. I know I will probably not realistically get the results until tomorrow but for everybody who has gotten this far - am I in the right spot on the site to look for this?? Thanks - the suspense is killing me!!!! :uhoh21:

Taking NCLEX on Monday!!!
I just got home about an hour ago from taking the test and also got 75 questions. Not a clue how I did but I will keep my fingers crossed for both of us.

How many quit???
My freshman class started out with about 130 and 57 graduated. The school is very focused on NCLEX pass rates which they claim to be 97 percent for them.

Personal malpractice insurance....yes or no?
I just graduated and will be starting work in a couple weeks. Can anyone who has malpractice insurance recommend a good company to go through "just in case."

Can someone please tell me about disaster drills?
I can't seem to get onto this site - is there more to the web address?? I would love to read it before I go to test. I keep getting a message that the page can't be displayed. Thanks

I failed....
Do you have a website or phone number for Drexel's review???

Att
I was wondering how long it takes to get your ATT. I am in New York.

Saunders review book
I have Saunders Comprehensive Review for NCLEX and was also going to buy the Saunders book of questions and answers. I noticed that they both have 3500 questions. My question is are they the same 3500 questions in both books or is it a total of 7000 different questions? I don't want to buy another book if it is nothing different than what I already have.

online RN to BSN
Are these programs recognized by other states?? I am in New York - would something from AZ or wherever be a valid degree here?? Not sure how that all works.
