A prime lawsuit
I was a legal nurse consultant at one time. The "suit" would depend on if there was negligence and did the result of that negligence cause the patient permanent harm or injury? If a vital organ had been removed, the jury would have something to ponder. But, I think we'd all do better without our appendix anyway! And surely the surgery did not cause permanent harm. And, the jury would be considering if the ER doc's fast action was really negligent. Things to think about!

I saw my first patient that died today...
Heartlover, it doesn't get 'easier', but you learn to deal with it.You usually have more than one patient to consider....the actual patient and the family.Having worked in hospice,we learned ways to treat the patient AND the family. It's heartbreaking all around. Your name says it all, you have heart and you will learn as time goes on.Be sure to always take care of the caregiver, and that means you, too.

would you be a RN for $11.00/hr?
I have been a nurse since 1963.My best times in my career was when I was making $4/hour. Yes, that was top pay back then.Guess what?We didn't have all the rules/regs/JCAHO standards,IDPH rules,CMS rules,DRGs. It was pure, unadulterated nursing care. I'd go back there in a minute!

where do old nurses go?
I am 63.Been an RN since 1962.My body said to me, "do something different cuz the back is wearing out!!". I did some legal nurse consulting, but missed working in a hospital.Joined an information systems dept in hospital & because of my loooong history of working in every area + legal experience,I am loving my position. People actually ask what I think & listen to my thoughts.Plus,I am loved cuz when I program/create/teach something to clinical people, they know I have 'been there'. I am making life easier for my fellow clinical folks. I am not a nerdie geeky computer guy...once a nurse...always a nurse.

Home birth vs. hospital
I worked in neonatal unit in StLouis. Many home births occurred in surrounding area.I hated getting the urgent msg to ready ourselves cuz a home birth gone awry was coming in!! We had labor rooms where entire families could come, practice their own homegrown technique for delivering a 'home' baby, but if urgent intervention was necessary, they were 20' from the delivery room! Please, God, let these ladies know that we want them to have a beautiful delivery, complete with a pink, perfect, safely delivered baby! an old ob nurse!

This is sick
I have never seen this in over 42 years of being a nurse, and in 4 states. What I have seen is slow increasing of Morphine to cover a patient's increasing pain that only an ongoing, horrible cancer can create. The amounts of morphine some patients are taking would be fatal to a person just being put on morphine initially. But, morphine does have the ability to be able to be increased with almost no cap. In my many experiences with a painful, cancer death, it sounds to me like your father's death really had nothing to do with the dosage of morphine given. It was just his time to answer God's call. God Bless him.

What are some of the strangest situations you have gotten into in home health
Cleanest wound I ever had was a man had half his foot removed, and as I tended it for the first time, saw many maggots 'debriding' the wound. It was pink, granulation at all edges, no purulency, no infection! Dr told me to leave them; they were doing a good job! Had to bite the back of my teeth with determination each time I dressed his foot!
