In need of some peer support...
Listen SuperNurse, I found that in my very early career I felt guilty for all sorts of things that went wrong, things I missed, or how other nurses made me feel. However, I finally realized that in our field (which is a 24/7 occupation) that there is another shift for a reason. It's a constant learning process. I don't care how long you have been doing this- if you think you know all and that you have nothing else to learn you are an idiot! We are always going to have individuals that are having a bad day or just have a bad attitude. You can't be in 2 (or more) places at once. You have an obligation to take care of all your patients not just the one. I know that sometimes it's hard to accept sometimes but, you are not psychic (right?). How could you possibly know that your patient is going to have a seizure and the exact moment it will occur so that you will be hovering at the bedside with Ativan or Valium. You said it yourself- the nurse that you reported off to is a "it's just a job" kinda nurse. She didn't like the fact that she may have to do a little more work than she wants to. You should not feel bad about this. I suggest that you start getting use to having to deal with nurses like the one you encountered today because they are everywhere and it will drive you crazy if you let it. You cannot control anyone else or their lack of professionalism but your own. With nurses like that- you just have to let it roll off your back. Who knows- one day you may get to return the favor. ;-) Keep your head up!

NON-Nurses Giving Shots in MD Offices
I know this is an old post... however I had to go get my tdap for pre-employment as a travel nurse. I have never been to a doctor's office where I have been given an IM injection by lab tech. So, yesterday was a first for me. I was very surprised. I can't say that I feel that it's a bad thing with the proper training- however, having said that- without having some basic knowledge about pharmacology and medication side effects is it really a good idea? I don't feel that it is. I read a post here that said that some lab techs are giving narcotics IM. I find this ridiculous. I would also like to mention that the IM injection I received was not in the correct area to give an injection. It was a bit late once the needle was in my arm to protest. She administered the IM injection in the very top of my deltiod muscle (level with the very top of my joint). I was completely speechless. I didn't think to ask prior to the injection if she was a nurse or not. She didn't have on any sort of identification- only scrubs. Once I had a copy of the paperwork I realized that she was listed as a lab tech. It may not be illegal but, at the VERY LEAST these individuals need to be properly educated about how to administer IM injection if they are going to administer them. I still really think it is a HUGE liability.

Travel Nurse Pay, am I getting what I should be?
I've been traveling since 2005 and I have worked for many companies. They do act like that's all they can do- they lie. Refuse it- tell them (next time) the pay is to low. Sorry going to work with another company. Within 48 hours the company will call you back and offer you more money. I also like to use at least 3 companies when searching for my next contract. Whoever offers me the best deal is who I go with. Don't be afraid to let them know they have competition- they will work harder and faster to get you into a position you are happy with. Good luck! You are so getting screwed out of money. The rates are lower than they were a few years ago. Try to pocket the housing stipend and find your own housing- craigslist is good. Find a roomate and go for it!

how to deal with this intensivist
I had a similar situation happen to me a few years ago. I wrote a letter to my manager and the medical director and CC'd him in on it. It was not a nice letter- I let him have it in the letter. Before the end of the day he called me at home to apologize for being such an ass.

Forced Flu Shots
Georgetown Hospital in DC has forced flu shots. I am a travel nurse and have went through signing my contract and submitting my paperwork just to find out that if I don't have a flu shot I can't go to the facility. Normally I would say- ok, no big deal I'll get the shot but, I am allergic to the shot and eggs. Despite that info and the offer to provide the facility a note from my doctor they continue to refuse to allow me to come to the facility. Is this not discrimination? How can they do this and get away with it? Please help!
