  1. Human beings aren't meant to do just 1 thing 24 hours a day 365 days a year so it's normal that you have outside interests but you still need to make a living & support your self & family. The awesome thing about nursing is that you can work 8, 12, 16 hour shifts 3-5 days a week or go PRN. You can work 3 twelve hour shifts, 3 days a week, which should be considered full time w/ benefits & at least 40k pay. Then the other 4 days you're off, pursue music. Hope that helps. Keep us posted. Good luck!
  2. About a year ago, my friends mom was a newly graduated RN and went through something similar. She also told us that she was fired because she refused to take on 40 patient load. We all didn't believe her because we thought it was insane for management to expect a new nurse to take on such a large patient load within the first few weeks & immediately suspected that she may have did something to piss someone off (as klone commented), but now reading your post, I'm sorry we doubted her. As RNgemini commented, the hospital that I want to work at after graduating has a similar program, which i feel is how all new nurses should be trained. My advice for you is to keep all personal interests to yourself, find a smaller hospital to work. If you are finding the same issues then there is nothing wrong with working LTC to get some experience. The important thing is to be able to support yourself ASAP. Another thing to consider if you haven't already is to figure out your personality type. This is important to know as you may find that you are a better fit for a different department & may find success in different areas. Please keep us posted on how your doing. Good luck!
  3. Hi black RN did you ever find a solution to your problem? How are things going now? Let us know. Grace135, I am also an INTJ in nursing school & have received the same comments from my supervisors & have considered applying to medical school. I do enjoy helping & teaching others & wouldnt mind becoming a nurse educator. Good luck to all INTJ nurses, we are a rare type & it's not always easy navigating the perfect career path for us.
  4. I would've talked to her about it first. Maybe you would've found out she had another job, family responsibilities, school, etc...(I've juggled all 3 at the same time & know how exhausting it is)...it's still not an excuse for her not doing her job responsibilities but obviously she's not getting sleep & there's a reason why. Find out by talking to her & then offer her advice with a warning that you'd have to report it if she does it again. You would want someone to do that for you. You said you don't like her so it's hard to believe that you really wanted management to retrain her. Maybe you just wanted her to be punished but didn't think it would be as severe as her losing her job. I believe you when you say you feel bad about that. We also don't know what her attitude is like & that can make a difference in how you feel. My opinion.
  5. Hi thanks for all the advice. I have found another job and it's been going pretty good so far. Management is much better.
  6. Yes, there is a lot going on with management. Where some hang out outside of work with my coworkers & they have their own problems that of course is brought into the workplace. Another manager is very passive & seems to rather deal with the office politics & not anything going on in residential side. And finally yes, some employees are dating each other between administration, floor workers (nurses, therapists, etc..) & other support departments such as housekeeping & kitchen. Everybody is entangled with each other some kind of way. Every time I'm interacting with someone, another person will approach me later to tell me why I shouldn't talk to that person. It's very unrealistic to assume that you can come to work & not talk to anyone. I feel like I got adopted into a very dysfunctional family unit. It is actually worse than what I've posted here due to me wanting to keep privacy so what you are reading is a very soft version of what really goes on here. Like I said earlier, I'll try my best to stay away from the drama & give it another month before I look for another job. Thanks!!
  7. Thanks for the advice. No one really talks to me now which is a good & bad thing. I'm hoping that It will get better soon. I'm going to give it another month before I think about looking for somewhere else to work.
  8. Hi everyone! I just started working at a rehabilitation facility where I float between assisted living department & memory care. Prior to working here, I've always worked as a private caregiver in home health. It has been very difficult for me to try to stay away from all the drama surrounding me between my coworkers. They all gossip to me about other people and sometimes even argue with each other at the job! It is very stressful because it seems like nobody likes each other nor get along with each other. There is a lot of smiling in each other's face and ripping them apart verbally and backstabbing. Management doesn't really do much and I've heard that a lot of good workers have left because of the drama. I have bills to pay and I'm making more than I did in my previous job so I'd hate to leave. I just want suggestions on how to make it tolerable for me to come to work? Ive spoken to someone in management about the problems and now I'm the one being gossiped about. Any suggestions? The problem with management is that they tell us they have an open door policy & that we can come to them with our problems, but when we do, it actually causes more problems with coworkers. It's really frustrating as I haven't had to deal with this as a private caregiver working by myself or even when I had one other person to work with. By the way I am a CNA with a bachelors in business. Thanks!!
  9. I have a question for all the intj nurses - why do we seem to end up as nurses instead of fields that are more aligned with our interests, personality & natural strengths. I noticed a majority of us are introverted & seem to have interests in science, technology and law?
  10. Hi I am also an intj. Reading your post was like looking at a mirror. I feel exactly the way you do & also do creative things in my free time. I am also constantly redecorating my room. I am actually debating whether i should get out and go into a science or tech field. Why did you get out the tech field and what is it like working in it day to day?
  11. think it varies from state to state and person to person. I was a nursing assistan since '99 before I became an LPN. I love what I do and wouldn't trade it for nothing in the world. I live in Louisiana and I chose a nursing home to get started just love having a bond with my residents and some love the hospital for the fast pace... Thanks rserie, I was thinking about working in nursing home my 1st year thinking it may be more slow paced, but my instructor insists that I work in hospital. Do you have any idea what its like working night (3rd) shift? I wanted to make sure I would have time for lpn school during day.
  12. I am currently a nurse assistant student. After reading all the above comments I would like to know what IS the best place for new nurse assistants to work- a place that is slow paced enough to practice new basic skills?
  13. Wow! I am currently a nursing assistant student. What would be the best place to work after receiving certification?
  14. I am currently a nusrsing assistant student but am deciding between pursuing either a clinical career in nursing (rn) or medical informatics. I would like to start school next fall (2011) but do not know what to study. I would like to relocate to d.c./maryland/va area, because it seems to be where all the healthcare jobs are. A lot of people have told me that I would enjoy a career in informatics than in nursing. My concerns are job security, salary & the ability to learn new things/training on the job. I would like advice from someone who is actually working in this area. I understand that those who are not in healthcare would be opposed to nursing due to the fact you are in close proximity to the sick & therefore would advise a career not dealing with that.
  15. We are currently in clinicals (at a nursing home) for my nursing assistant class. So far I am enjoying 90% of my experience there (the other 10% from the bad attitudes the cnas give us sometimes). I am still deciding whether to pursue a career in nursing or medical informatics. All the lpn's I've talked to told me I should go straight for the rn & not the lpn. Those who are not working in healthfield were against nursing & told me that technology is where the jobs are & that I should do medical informatics. Some have advised me to work in health insurance industry. I have a degree in marketing but always volunteered my time doing home health, assisted living & fundraisers for various cancer & disease awareness. I did not enjoy sales but loved the volunteer work I did, which made me change careers to healthcare. I eventually plan to get my masters degree in healthcare management in 3-5 yrs. I am looking forward to having a meaningful career where I am helping to make a positive change in this world by helping others. I want a respectable career that gives me a variety of things to do, excitement & makes me feel good at the end of the day. Can anyone give me advice? Especially what its REALLY like working as a RN or medical informatics? Also how is it different from nursing informatics? Any advice on working while in school? Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you!
