  1. Nursing is a great profession to be sure. Since you're still in high school it will be very important for you to do well in your science classes and take elective sciences if available. Psychology classes would be helpful as well. The trend is leaning toward hiring nurses with a BSN (bachelors of nursing) so you would probably be better served to do one of these programs rather than an associate's or diploma program... good luck!
  2. I am a new grad as of May 2010, and in a very tight job market, took the only job offered to me. My thought was, any job to get some experience is better than no job. It is in a sub-acute rehab/LTC where I received 2 weeks of orientation, am responsible for 20+ patients with trachs, g-tubes, etc and am being required to stay for double shifts at least a few times a week. I dread this job and feel like it is sucking the life out of me.. with no time for my husband, family or friends. I am terrified for the safety of my patients since I am not able to give them the care they need, due to the sheer amount of work there is to be done and also due to my exhaustion and frustration. I have voiced my concerns to the management of the facility, but they do not seem concerned. I updated my resume today and am going to start applying to other jobs. However, I know that they will almost certainly ask why I am leaving my job after just 4 months.. I know you should not speak badly about previous employers... so how should I go about fielding this question?? Thanks for any input in advance!!
  3. mominsd Re: I cannot stand Med/Surg!!!! 3 months in my job and ready for a change STAT!!! I am right there with you. I lasted 3 months and quit. I am older and decided I am not going to work in an environment where I hate it! I have a job I love now, days, M-F. I am home at night, week ends and Holidays. It was the right decision for me, so make the decision based on what you need to do. If you want to stay in bedside nursing you need to stick it out, if not there are other options out there. Wow.. I am wondering how you did this? I am also a new grad 3 months into a job that I hate.. and hate the 3-11 schedule because I never see my family or friends. I have been thinking about working in a clinic or something similar to get onto a normal work schedule, but I didn't think it was possible after only 3 months experience...
  4. I am a new grad as well and new to this website, so I apologize if I hijack your help for a minute.. the instructions told me to try to use a thread already started instead of a new one.. I am also feeling pretty hopeless with my new job. I could not even get a hospital job to begin with and took a job in sub-acute rehab/LTC. I am struggling very much with a 2 week orientation and 20 patients I am responsible for. They are fairly acute, too much so for a 20:1 ratio. I am terrified everyday that something will happen to a patient or I will lose my license for something.. I feel like a fish out of water. On top of it, I work 3-11 most nights of the week and miss my husband terribly. I almost feel like I am losing myself.. I'm not sure what to do... I have only been at my job for a little over 2 months.. I am thinking that maybe a clinic job, school nurse or something similar might be a better fit for me, but feel like I will not be able to get one because I have no experience. I am in MA and the jobs are tight.. just like everywhere else I guess.. A question I have is whether or not I should even try to apply to another job now.. and if I do, should I even list my current job on my resume? I have been trying to get used to the job but I cry everyday before I go to work, the nurses gossip, the DNS obsesses over paperwork instead of patient care.. it just doesn't seem like the environment I want to work in. I don't even mind being paid a little less.. it is worth my sanity..
