Obstetric Anaesthesia
Hi Everyone Im a secong year ODP and doing a presentation next week on general anaesthesia and have been given the topic of obstetric anaesthesia. Heres the question: 'Linda is 34, mother of 2 girls aged 5 and 7. Shes expecting twins and has been admitted to undergo a planned caesarean section. Lindas health is normal and her pregnancy has progressed without complication. Her husband is a member of staff (theatre charge nurse) and wants to be there for delivery, but under GA the hospital has a policy of not allowing fathers to be present. Her pre op baseline is BP - 140/100, Pulse - 90 bpm, Resps - 16 Urinalysis is unremarkable, only a slight trace of protein. Linda is V anxious and tearful, never had an anaesthetic before, and husband has told her that sometimes things can go wrong or be difficult. She is worried as she is expecting twins and fears that one or both babies may suffer setbacks.' Outline immediate care to linda in order to reassure, and subsequent anaesthetic assistance to facilitate safe surgical intervention How would anaesthetic room be prepared. Anyway, Im doing 1st part of the presentation which will include: an introduction and outline if case study, talk about her past medical history and present medical state. Talk about the reasons why she may be going for a planned CS. we are also covering: Drugs, equipment, monitoring, special baby equipment, reassurance, patient issues, anaesthetic procedure, positioning and emergency issues (failed intubation, aspiration). Any ideas of what to put in.. or anything we may have missed out.... Ive never witnessed any obstetric anesthesia yet, may do some at some point this year so i dont know what goes on in obstetric theatres. Catherine x:)

New Campaign
Hi I just wanted to tell you about a campaign im involved with at the moment. We are trying to get a law passed for england, the same as scotland will get on friday 18th march, where it will be an offence to ask a women to move or leave because she is breastfeeding in a public place. We already have a lot of interest from MPs and national media, so you may well hear about it. Please have a look at our website at www.thewaynatureintended.org to see what its all about. Breast Reduction ???? To or not to ????
I am considering a reduction op, and would like to know about recovery times. I have 3 weeks hols and 2 weeks in uni this summer.... so thats 5 weeks in total where i wont be at work on placement in a hospital. When i do go back on placement it would be in the post op recovery area. Would this be enough time? Im a student operating department practitioner in the UK. I am thinking of getting a loan out to pay for the op as we dont have insurance here to cover the op and its near impossible to get the op on the NHS. Any advice appreciated. Catherine xxx

Interview questions?
First of all thankyou for all the advice you have given me... it proved really useful, and gave me a little confidence this morning... Well I had the interview this morning for the odp course... and I think it went really well. I was quite calm (thanks to rescue remedy.. magic stuff!) and seemed to answer all of the questions ok. They were simling and nodding at me most of the time so I think thats a good thing, and i built up a good rapport with the two people interviewing me. It want half as bad as I expected though.:) Questions: 1 Tell me a bit about yourself (work, hobbies, education) 2 What do you know about the course 3 What do you think the role of an ODP is 4 What would be the main difficulty you experienced in an operating room 5 How do you think stress would affect staff in an operating room 6 How would you deal with the amount of work you would get 7 Do you know of anything in the news about the NHS at present 8 How would you plan a peice of coursework from start to finish Im sure there were more but cant remember... Talk a lot about placements, types of roles, set up of the course aswell as things like car parking. Told them I had researched the job as much as possible and talked to ODP's in different areas of the country to get their input. I asked how many places are there on the course, what date would i start, what would be the highest I could go after qualification, is there on going training after qualification, i asked whether i could get a placement at hexham hospital as that is nearer to me and the course leader liked that as they have problems getting people to go there as its quite a way out of newcastle (not that far from me though). I also asked how soon would I hear the outcome of the interview, and she told me that they would send out the letters this morning! so i should receive the letter on friday or saturday! Reason being they need to tell us soon as the course start date is 13th September. So fingers crossed for me.. let the (short) waiting begin! :) Love Catherine xxxx
