  1. Hello there, i was wondering if you all can explain through your urology experience how this will work out for my dad. My father had a lung surgery due to a collapsed lung and a foley catheter was place. They sent him home with a foley Catheter and couple days later asked him to go to the urology clinic to remove it. They removed it and sent him home and asked him to see if he can pee. He wasn't able to have a continuous flow, had dribbles and retained a lot of fluid due to not being able to pee and ended up in the hospital for lung infection. Again he has a Foley catheter and planning to remove it on Monday after staying 9 days in hospital. My question is how will he get out of the cycle of removing Catheter- if not able to pee. How will he gain his peeing ability's on his own after having a foley bag catheter for 9 days. What if on mondays appt he is not able to pee again. Thanks
  2. Please Please work as a CNA first in a hospital setting before putting any more money into the classes. Lot of ppl go into nursing thinking of being gloriefied job but then end up quitting. Go for a businness degree and work in an office doing paperwork. I know I would have done it but don't want to waste any more money..
  3. I think volunteering also counts..I am in the process of getting my RN license active (taking refresher) so trying to find out all the details..somewhere in this site..I read that volunteering also counts towards those hours..don't quote me on that though..:)
  4. In addittion, In WA you also have to fulfil the 531 hours of clinical practice every 3 years to keep you rn license active..thats what I was told..
  5. Hi all, I am currently doing a RN refrsher..finishing up the theory portion, then the skills (3 day-- travel to the univ) then 146 hours of clinical at a hospital of your choice plus aids/hiv course, cpr, immunizations..its pretty intense..After 12 years away from nursing, I only want to do public health..not sure if I want to be a staff nurse at a hospital...where are you guys plannign to work after a refresher..I feel home health might not work for me since I quit pretty early in my nursing career only 1 year..
  6. Thank you so much for responding to my post. I keep asking myself I hope I am not making the mistake by not renewing but I guess I don't want to go through the stress that comes with the territory..You are right I really don't have the passion for it..If I had the passion, I know I am hard-worker and would have made it through..!! now I have search for posts about "What to do with a BSN"???
  7. Yes it is for future job stability reasons and no I am not working currently. I have stayed home for the past 11 years raising kids and a stay home mom. My family thinks it might be good thing to pursue right now since my kids are in elementary school stage and I have some time to myself. They think even if I don't want to work as a nurse I should definitely have the license active as it will open more doors for me work wise in the non-patient care side. Not sure how realistic is that..
  8. Hi all, Currently I am enrolled in an online RN refresher program after 11 years of nursing break. I let my license expire after working for 1 year as new grad. After a lot of pushing from my family and friends regarding renewing my RN license, I enrolled myself in the refresher. Being away for 11 years from the nursing environment, I feel like I am not into it anymore and have no desire to work in those conditions but everyone keep on telling me to just renew the license and you don't have to work as a nurse. Their intention is to "keep my license active" no matter if I want to work or not. Is this the right choice I am making? I keep on telling my family I am not into nursing anymore. I am scared of it..they say.."Just activate your license!!! What should I do?
  9. Thank you so much for all the respone. I am trying to re-enter nursing after 13 years and would like to work in public health setting only..:)
  10. Thanks everyone!! I am based in seattle WA so will check with the department. I am sure there is huge # of applicants since it seems like everyone wants to be a PHN.:) but will try my luck out!!
  11. Can you be a PHN if you are a new grad? Do new grads get hired in the public health nursing or do you require 1 year of exp as a RN. I am RN BSN. Thanks for any input!!
  12. I was wondering once you have the licencse how do you keep it active if you can't find a job???
  13. I am currently taking a refresher course. It has 4 parts.(Theory, Pharmacology, skills and clinical). I am doing the first one right now. I am thinking after I finish this course I DON'T want to work in a hospital or hospice or home health or LTC..spoiled brat right?? For some reason after being away for nursing for 13 years with 1 year of peds LTC experience, I have developed a fear and not sure if I want to provide direct patient care anymore. I would like to work in non-clinical positions but not sure how will I get into those without the experience. I am still not sure if I should be pursuing renewing the RN licence..I am so confused?? Thanks for listening!! Any advice??
  14. Any new grads RN's getting any type of non-clinical jobs ? If so in what area?
  15. What kind of non-clinical jobs RN new grads are getting?
  16. Hi,I am currently in the same situation as you and thinking what kind of nursing jobs to start with. I am not sure if Public health nursing will hire any new grads with no experience. I will follow your thread to gain more insight. I am in the seattle area. Where are you located?
  17. Sorry CCL RN..I didn't mean to offend anyone.:) What I meant was are there any happy RN's in seattle area and which area? Thanks for your comment!!
  18. Thanks Grntea!!! GitanoRN-you are right...I should toughen up and go back to it..Since I have left the practice thinking about starting all over again and the whole idea of patient care/bedside care gives me anxiety..I know so many nurses are working. I guess it will only make me strong rather than chickening out..:)
  19. Hi,I have read so many horrer stories/bad experiences in this forum that I am wondering if there are any happy nurses out here in the seattle area? I am thinking about renewing my RN licence but after reading about so many unhappy nurses I am having doubts whether to go into nursing again or not? If you loved your job or currently loving it, please share where and what speciality? Thanks!!
  20. Would you activate your RN license if you don't want to do bedside nursing? Do all non-clinical RN positions require a licence?
  21. Hi all, I am currently taking a refresher course to activate my RN licence which I let it expire in 1999. I only have 1 year experience in a LTC for Peds. My question is I want to activate my licence but doesn't want to work in the clinical side of nursing. Is it worth renewing my licencse if I don't want to do bedside or clinic nursing. I am more interested in UR/clinical documentation. Should I be going through a refresher or is it going to be a waste of time if I don't want to work as a bedside nurse. I am also thinking of public health but wondering it might be tough to get in public health without any experience. Am I right? Any thoughts/sugesstions are welcome. Thanks!!
  22. Hi, I graduated in 1999 with a BSN RN and worked in a peds Long term care for 9 months. I didn't like it and since then have been working in non-clincal side..such as low end jobs in the insurance industry. Recently I certified myself as coder..I haven't been able to find a job but I am leaning towards it even though the pay is much lower than nurses. I am also doing RN refresher course self study currently but having doubts that I once I have my licenense activated what do I do with it? I don't want to work in the hospital as a nurse..neither in any Long term cares. I am wondering if I should even continue the refresher? What jobs can I get a new nurse which are non-hospital or non-LTC? or should continue in the low level jobs for my happiness?
  23. The girl who said she did refresher in washington state...which univerisity did you do if from?
  24. Thanks to both you awesome nurses to respond back. I know I have to get into the field to build some confidence...I know I will have my bad days at work and good days..and only practicing will make me perfect..
