  1. I would make that anonoymous call to the state and report the things ur telling us about. Thats the only way it'll change. When the faculity is paying thousands in fines they will have to clean up their act since the state will keep on them till they do. It happened at my place recently due to elopement, then from there a whole lot of other violations came to light. Things will never be perfect but its somewhat better. Make that call.
  2. To the lady in the diningroom who starts hollaring to go to her bed the moment she swallows her last bite of food. Shut up, be patient, some people arent done eating yet and now that you decided to be annoying we will put u in last. Thx To the 2 guys in room 16, I will hide your call lights during meal times. Again we arent done feeding and u already went to the bathroom 5 x in 4 hrs. All so its funny u have full range of motion yet cant maneuver a urinal. Lady at the end of the hall, when u put on your call light then 2 seconds later put on the emergency light and the 2 sec later sit in your doorway and scream i need to pee, I still cant get u in 1 sec. Our transporter beam is broke, dont worry i put in in a work order to have it fixed To the guy who everyday disimpacts himself, ur gross.....just because u OD'D on acid its not an excuse to put your fist in your butt. To 1 certain aide, look u only been here 2 yrs and just because u are older than the rest of the aides it doesnt make u sr aide, so stop ordering me around. U maybe faster than me but only cause u arent doing your job, powder and body spray doesnt equel clean. Nobody else is sitting around at the nurses station at 9am on a 4man assignment except u, guess what we arent stupid. and i dont have to do what u say, only what the nurses say, so f off!
  3. Just my input, as a student u will see things way different than u do after ur certified and get out on the floor. Yes your preceptor sounds lil harsh but she was prolly giving u reality. Reality u need to be quick do whats important and get on to the next person. I feel using universal precautions is the most important and using compassion. The thing about the shower chair, i woulda asked housekeeping for disinfectant spray at the very least. As far as restraints,, just cause the woman was an angel at mealtime, maybe she became combative during changes, holding back her hands may have been safer than her grabbing a handful of the aides hair or scratching at her or whatever, these aides are with these people likely 5x a week and know what their behaviors are. We as aides can be compassionate, give good care and still be quick and have to cut some corners. If u stick with it u will see what we all mean. Yes in a perfect world ltc places would have full staffing and we could do everything textbook, but thats not reality, people come in out of class and find it wasnt what they expected and quit, or get hurt and are out for along time, leave for a better paying place, or we get alot of call offs because people are burned out from too much o/t or just plain tired, etc. its a nonstop cycle. and prolly will never change. As for the calculator thing just brush up and the math becomes pretty repetative when u get out there. but for states just brush up u will b fine. there are reasons your instructor is telling u, u cant use the calculator, she knows what the state testers look for and is trying to help u. Good luck, its a rewarding career if u decide its for u!!:heartbeat
  4. Ya know some of the seasoned aides are always gonna complain about newbies rather than try to help. It makes them feel important. Before supper go through be sure all supplies are in the rooms, beds turned down and padded, and do your shower or swers if u can. After dinner get with a partner and get all the doubles in bed first off, quickly johhny them and change any heavy wetters. After they are all in, go back and get the people finished or the singles to bed in order of importance. Keep a written list and until its routine add a note to self to check for dirty laundry and check the trash. Pretty soon it'll be routine, rt now your nervous and overwhelmed. It gets better.:redbeathe
  5. I have worked in LTC for several yrs, I have seen quite a few things. But at one particular place I worked whenever someone was getting ready to go they would speak of 2 children coming in the room, always no matter what the person would describe the same children. One girl who would tell the resident it was ok to let go and that the little boy would stand near the door because he wasnt suppose to talk to strangers. When someone would tell us about the kids they would pass within 3 days. At the same place we had an Alzhiemer patient on my unit who would wander about all day. She was strong and ambulatory, but her mind was "out there", well a few times we'd catch her in a residents room and have to re direct her. A couple different times she predicted death. One day that stands out is when she went to this ladies room, and I went down because the resident was hollaring for her to get out. I was gently redirecting her and she kept laughing and saying I wanted to tell her goodbye she is leaving today. I didnt think much of it. Well the lady of whom she was speaking was restless all day, just hollaring for her husband and trying to get out of her wheelchair. Normally her husband was there everyday at 11-ish to feed her lunch. He called that day to tell us he would be there around one, as he had an appointment. We told his wife and she was real upset saying he needed to be there now. Meanwhile the alzhiemer lady came in and said laughing, she is leaving before one. (this is someone who didnt normally even know what time of day it was)...... After lunch, the wife was being transferred to bed for an afternoon nap, just as the aides got her up to move her myself and her husband walked into the room and she had a massive stroke that took her immediatly. Her poor husband was distraught and felt so guilty for being late. He was in the hall while the RN prenounced her dead and the Alzhiemer lady came up and looked him totally serious and said I told them all she was leaving today, and walked away. I took her much more seriously from then on.
  6. I dont think the poster was trying to offend anyone, she was just wanting to swap "war stories" so to speak. I myself love hearing stories about the crazy things people seen. Not like they are all LOL moments or anything, some are, some are sad, some are like wow I didnt know the human body could do that and some are like wow people are dumb. If u have a real sad story u dont care to share dont, share a funny one or a story that made u think ***...... sometimes in the medical field, we like to know other people have a rough day, or a crazy resident/patient. Peace:heartbeat
  7. Hi, I currently hold a license as a CNA in NY. Currently I am out on disablity cause I am due for my baby in 3 weeks. I plan to go back to work per diem when she is like 6 - 9 months old. The LTC I work at isnt doing so well and honestly may not be there for me to go back to. So I have some decisions to make. What I wonder is if I went to work at the hospital as a NA which doesnt require certification am I taking a step down? Do hospitals offer more training? Or just less pay and more responsibility? I like the aspect of maybe getting trained for blood draw or something more than NA. I love what I do but I do want more, and till my daughter is a lil older like old enough to go to nursery school, i just cant go to school for LPn, so I want to weigh my options. I been an aide for along time. I dont feel challenged anymore, thou I love my residents and know I do make a difference. Thank you for reading and any good insight
