going from working several years as a medic to the ED as an RN was not that big of a deal as long as you have the right attitude. ive seen medics come into the ED with the attitude that they know everything, and are immediately put in their respective place. however, for the most part its not really an issue. I work in a level one trauma center, which is also a teaching hospital so you have several people competing for the experience. after 5 years in the ED i went to flight nursing. there is a lot more autonomy and a lot less chaos. I stil work as a per diem in the ED.....primarily beause of the money....My advise would be start as an RN.....if you still want more responsibility consider NP/MD
  4. In our ED is all about schedule chaos.....While our traditional shifts are 7a-7p....We have a bunch of staggered shifts to boost nursing levels during our traditional "busy times.'....While its nice to have the extra staffing, trying to keep everyone straight as to when they start and when they leave is just a nightmare.
  5. i would find it difficult to live with myself if i passed up an accident scene with no "trained" help on location and woke up the next morning to read the persons obituary in the paper.. Everyone who responded to this post offered valid points as to why they would or would not stop to assist. I try and carry a cpr pocket mask and latex gloves in the glove compartment of my truck, so that i can protect myself, because like another person who replied, i refuse to expose myself to the point of jeopardizing my health. As for civil suits, your absolutely correct that we live in a tort society, every idiot looking for a dollar will go out of his way to jam you up if he thinks he has a chance to make a buck. But for me at least, i'll take that chance.
  6. gathering some information in regard to agency RN positions within the ED. When approaching an agency for employment, can one request an ED only assignment? In addition, in large urban areas, I have heard that the rate of pay per hour can be as much as 40/hr....Is is true or only wishful thinking?
