Who is Attending TWU Fall 2004
TWU or Baylor ( I graduated from TWU this summer Cum Laude from their accelerated program so here's a little advice) The BEST is which ever one accepts you.... That includes the local Comm College or Jr. College program as well. 32,000 applicants were turned away for the 05-06 class. So please do not be caught up in the name game. If you have the inside track and KNOW for sure that you will get in, go with TWU or Baylor...which ever you prefer. They are both accredited. The Hospitals really will not care / give you special treatment based on which school you attended(Including Harvard's School of Nursing). The main thing is to get in wherever~!~! Here in Houston, I applied to The Univ of Texas at Houston , TWU and the Univ of Texas medical branch at Galveston. I was accepted in Galveston really early. I was accepted at TWU in good time(for the accelerated 1 year program) and lastly I was accepted at UT Houston about a week before school started for them!(The TWU acccelerated program actuallly started in May VS August for the traditional programs so when I got the call I was like. I'm alrady IN nursing school). So I hope I answered your question. Apply to more than just one school / type of program. Just get in and fulfill your dream/destiny. You can always go back and do the RN - BSN program later(or right away if you prefer). Its much easier to get in than the straight BSN program.

All you Northern Texans seem to think that TWU only has 2 Nursing Schools. There are 3 ....Denton , Parkland and ...........Houston So no way(ina) Jose(fina). I'm staying put right down here. I was bred, born and raised in Big D. Now I only make the occassional trip back just to see my kin. Other than that I a Houston boy now. By the by , the accelerated class started in MAY(they also accelerate the start date) I'm already 18 hours into this thing, with 18 more to go this semester.

Its still not too late to get the Acceptance Call/Letter
I was accepted into the traditional 2 yrs BSN program at UTMB Galveston on April 1st 2004. I was then accepted to the accelerated program at TWU about 3 weeks later(which I accepted and hence removed myself from the UTMB pool). I just rec'd a call from UT Houston on Friday Aug 6th (20+ days before school starts for the fall) offering me a position in their traditional nursing program. So please be patient and do not give up.I'm saying if not for the this fall, perhaps this will help someone in the future who reads this and is encouraged to not give up hope till the very VERY end. I initially rec'd "Sorry, yada, yada, yada," letters form ALL 3 for the FALL 04. But as folks declined, failed their prereqs. or realized that "Oh that Felony or Class C misdemeanor I got will prevent me from attending ...oh shoot" more and more spots became open. So DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED by those damn letters. Just stay calm, keep cool, pray, chant, do yoga or whatever you do and get you ears/eyes/heart open for the good news!

No Sweat Ladies and I mean that literally. da Cunha uses Copstead & Banasik + Study Guide. He PROVIDES you with the notes. You MUST then supplement his notes with your own. That is there are things that he says that need to be added to the powerpoint notes that he uses. There was a guy who like me made a B, (but in a previous semester) .Well he decided he wanted to be a Nurse Anesthetist(sp). So he wanted an A in the class to make him more competitive. He made A's on the first 2 exam(I mean who wouldn't, heck he had already taken this same Prof. once before), But the last exam threw him for a curve. I do not know if he wound up getting an A after all. Then there was a gal in my accelerated class that pretty much matched him A for A and this was her first attempt and she was a computer science major, not a "real" science major by any stretch. I don't now how bad the last exam threw her either. My point is, just be confident. The study guide may be useful. I did NOT use it and neither did anyone else I know....but we all bought it.Tell you what if you like, after you get in his class...2 weeks before your 1st exam......get in touch with me and I will do my damndest to get you an "A"....Capeich'? Mean while, you take each set of his notes and rewrite them in your own words and that will help tremendously with your recall. The best thing about TWU exams and they are ALL Mutiple choice. Not so much multiple guess either. There are 2 that are definitely wrong. One is right by virtue of having a single correct statement. The "RIGHT" answer will be right by virtue of multiple truths. That's all for now. I gotta let you sweat a little don't I. What kind of a guy do you take me for....just give away info and expect nothing whatsoever in return. Some one's liable to hear this and my good, er, bad name would be distroyed:chuckle About Organic.....That was in my previous life, I have a bachelors from THE University and I had to take organic as a requirement.....THE University....Oh you don't know.....Yall mean, yall have never heard of THE University. Use to be that's all you had to say and folks knew what school you were tawkin bout! Well for all you Johnny Come Latelies, the full , true and correct name for THE University, would be..................................... THE University of TEXAS at Austin......Just plain 'ol THE University for those of us who bleed orange.

For what its worth, Patho and Pharm are taught at TWU by the dynamic dou husband / wife team of Dr.'s da Cunha and Haile. Dr. "D" as he is more affectionately referredto is also THE Patho instructor at UT Houston. (I say THE because he teaches both Nursing undergrad and Practioner level Grad courses at BOTH school as well. Both have similar styles and if you can pass one, you can pass the other. I made a 92(A) in Pharm and an 87(B) in Patho. STOP fretting about Patho/Pharm people. You WILL PASS...IF you apply yourself! Now ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, that's some **** that will give you nightmares

First Year In Nursing School
For anyone else who gets the jitters out there in the real world...remember, most things are used just like the common every day things that we use at home. First use common sense, Second, don't try to make it complicated. If you use it a certain way at home or in other applications, MOST LIKELY, you use it the same way in nusing. I was surprised at just how many of the nifty devices that are now being used in the field were actually designed by nurses!

First Year In Nursing School
Just picked up my books for the Fall semester. I'm taking 18 hours this semester so hang on to your wigs and your false teeth. It should be interesting to say the least. The great thing this semester will be that the folks in the accelerated program wil be mixed in with the "general population" so this will mean a larger IQ pool from which to draw study partners(read more hot looking chicks to drool over) .

First Year In Nursing School
But enough about me. If you leave your personal life at home/ out of you soon to become fulltime professional life...you'll make it. However if you mix all that personal $#!t up in your school life(be that listen to someone else gripe about relationship stuff or trying to help a friend get her life back on track after his/her sweetheart broke theirs), then you will be setting yourself up for possible failure. (me, I made an "A" in Pharm..that was the original topic and I didn't find it all that difficult. I took in last month(27 days of june to be exact) along with Assessment(27 days also) and Patho(its a 12 week course). I am currently taking therapeutics/clinicals and Nursing research (both for 27 days) and finishing up Patho. I am in the accelerated BSN program at TWU. 13 maddening months of pure adrenaline rushing mahem. The classes are challeneging, informative and educational, but they are not hard per se. If you studiend / understood the prereq. classes and had a genuine understanding about how the systems of the body interact, you've got half the battle won. The other poster was right, the hardest part of nursing school IS getting in. After that...its a piece of cake......

Who is Attending TWU Fall 2004
Hi Kristy, I am currently attending TWU as a first semester "Senior". I am in the accelerated program there and since we are in a 13 month "no sleeper/no slacker" program, our "qualification" ie junior / senior is a moot point. There are 20 of us as of this writing and we are blazing through this program takking 20 hours this summer, 18 in the Fall and spring and the remaining 6 or so next May. That's it. 13 months and we're done. We all already have Bachelors degrees in other disciplines, so they already knew that we knew how to study and get the job done. I think that if you have paid attention in the prereq. classes, and you have cleaned up your life...ie no boyfriend /girlfriend, drinking/partying or baby mama drama distractions, there is no way that anyone should have to leave the program. If any of the above still apply to folks then they should first settle these issues and then apply when they can commit them selves, mind, body and spirit.

Anyone starting BSN program @ UTMB Fall 2004???
For the 2004 class, with a science GPA of 3.4 and a preReq. GPA of 3.5. I interviewed at UTHSC. Result...declined. I was accepted into UTMB for the Fall I was also accepted into the accelerated BSN program at TWU. Obviously I did what any rational man would have done....I accepted the shorter more intense, hell on fire, wish I had thought about it longer, just hold on it'll be over soon ,damn did we just go through an entire usually semester long course in one week , program at TWU. To be fair, UTHSC and UTMB also have this same accelerated program. A young lady that I took API and II with was accepted into the accelerated program at UTHSC. I hope she's hanging in there. I have an undergraduate Biology from UT Austin (Hook'em) where I took most of my prereq.'s and I finished up the rest at Houston Community College. GPA IS THE QUALIFIER.......I say again(and it is perhaps unfortunate) GPA is the qualifier. The higher, the better. The school have something that everybody wants and they feel it importnat to pick / choose the very best students who they feel will a.) complete the program, b.)stay in the profession and treat it as a career and not just a hobby...ie work a few years, get married and then bail out. and c.)understand the implications and responsibility that comes along with this job. Nurses are the #1 trusted profession in the States. There is a lot riding on the shoulders of an accepted student. So they start at grades and then work their way down. Its no different than any other professional school. Guess which school has the HIGHEST GPA requirement....PA(physicians assist) school/programs. Heck your gpa can be lower if you apply for Medical School than it can be for acceptance into PA school...ain't that a kick in the pants.
