  1. Do you still need info on protocols?? I work at a hospital in NC that is currently performing elective hypothermia for asphyxiated infants. Please let me know if you are in need of any info.

Feel like an idiot right now...I just Google'd NeoFax and found the 2006 edition but it will take a while to ship to me and I was wondering if you guys think the floor will have a copy that I will be able to use while I wait for my own copy or if I should just order the 2005 edition so that I will have it before I start working on the floor? Thanks

Ok...so I went to Barnes and Noble today to purchase a NeoFax. They told me that the newest edition is a 2005 and they only have access to one copy so they weren't sure if they could get it in or not. They gave me the publisher's phone number so I could contact them about a newer edition and when I tried to call I got a recorded message saying that the number was disconnected. Do any of you know what is going on with NeoFax? Also is there a different drug book that I should purchase if I can't get the 2005 NeoFax? Any help is much appreciated.
  4. Ok...I just passed boards and will be starting in a level III NICU where everything is done including surgeries and ECMO. I purchased the newest edition of Merenstein and Gardner and am wondering what other books I should get to help me prepare for this. Also what do you guys recommend I should study up on in Merenstein?? Any help would be great, thanks.
  5. Congratulations!!!! I just found out that I also passed my boards and I will be starting as an RN in the NICU on July 18th!!!!!!! I am sooooo excited!!!!
  6. Hey all...I just finished taking my boards and I am sooo nervous!! I will be starting in the NICU on July 18th assuming I passed my boards. I hope everyone else is enjoying their summer.
  7. Congratulations!!!! I hope you are happy with wherever you choose.
  8. Thank you for all of your input. I never thought about the safety thing in regards to having RN on my plates, for me safety is always an issue when you stop no matter who you are. That alone is the reason why I will not stop if my five year old is in the car with me. I am glad to know that there is not a legal obligation to stop. For the record, I do stop and will continue to stop at every accident that I come across if it is in a public area. Otherwise I will call the authorities and make certain help is on the way.
  9. Can anyone tell me if you are legally or ethically bound to stop at an accident scene if you put RN on your plates? I stop when I can but I don't stop if it is just me and my 5 year old in the car. I would like to personalize my plates as long as there isn't any legal implication tied into it. Any links would be much appreciated.
  10. :balloons: Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:balloons: I still have until next Thursday before I am done and cannot wait. I am soo looking forward to a couple of weeks without having to do anything except NCLEX questions. I have soo much stuff going on right now that it feels like it will never slow down!!! lol I am so glad to hear that you are done and will start in the NICU so soon. Do you have to take boards before you start or after?
  11. ((((((((C'wing)))))))) I'm soooo sorry to hear about this. :icon_hug: Did they tell you anything about why you didn't get the job? On another note, are you willing to move out of state? I know several hospitals in Arizona and surrounding states are hiring lots of people from my graduating class. I don't think you should settle for Med-Surg if NICU is what you really want. Please let us know what you end up deciding.
  12. That is soo scary!!!!! I've had nightmares before about getting caught in an elevator door but I never thought it would actually decapitate someone!
  13. I researched all of that information before my interview. The hospital that I was hired at has a separate recruiting department for new grads and my recruiter interviewed me and gave me the chance to interview her before I spoke with the NICU manager. If you can, I would talk with the recruiter about that sort of thing and ask NICU specifics during your NICU interview. Also, find out as much information about the hospital and unit that you want to work in, it makes you look very prepared and interested in the jub. Good Luck on your interview and please let us know how it went!
  14. Tiny, I totally feel like an idiot sometimes!!! I completely flunked the lab chapter and felt like I was stupid. I can't believe I'm almost done in school and yet I feel like I don't know anything sometimes while I am going through the questions. I am only on Chapter 14 cause I just found out about Suzanne's plan but I am doing 2-3 chapters a day depending on what all is going on. We are on Spring Break right now but my daughter still has school so I am stuck at home all week so I will get lots of chapters done. Where are you at in the book?
  15. Tiny, I don't take my class until the 22nd of May. My hospital will also reimburse me for the cost so I am not worried about that. I have been following Suzanne's plan as well and find that to be helpful. I am hoping that between the two I won't have any problems. Please share your thoughts on the class after you take it. Thanks and Happy Easter to you as well!!
  16. Hey, Have any of you guys taken the Kaplan or know anyone who has? I'm a little curious about the course and would like to know what kind of things they do. If any of you can help me out that would be great.
  17. Where would I find Suzanne's recommendations that everyone is talking about? If you could just direct me to the post I would appreciate it. Thanks.
  18. I will be starting in a level III NICU in June of this year as a new grad. They do hire new grads but you have to look for one that will and has openings. That can be a little tricky but if you want NICU then go for it!! A lot of hospitals, especially teaching hospitals, prefer new grads to someone with experience in another field. That way they can teach the new grad everything instead of the person having to "unlearn" everything that they learned during their prior experience. Good luck!
  19. I am writing a paper on VBAC's and then giving a presentation on it for school. I was hoping I would be able to find pictures of the different types of incisions used for c-sections as well as anything else that would be good for posters. Do any of you know where I might find some? I have found all the written information but am having trouble finding things that would work well for a presentation. Thanks.
  20. :balloons: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:balloons:
  21. I know you weren't referring to me Fergus but I still wanted to let everyone know about that. I totally agree with what you said about that story as well.
  22. Ok...just to let you guys know, I am not one for doing everything possible if the situation does not warrant it. I am glad to hear that you are able to do comfort cares on a child if the parents don't want anything done. I was more questioning what would happen if there was a viable infant after a failed abortion and you all have mainly said that that never happens. I also agree that there are people out there who would want everything under the sun done even when there is no hope. I get discouraged by this because I know there are times, lots of times, especially in NICU, where it is better to let the child go and I hope that I will have the strength to be a good patient advocate during these times and help the parents make that difficult decision. Thank you all for your input on this highly controversial topic.
  23. I understand what you are saying but I guess I am more questioning what your responsibility is as a nurse when the abortion is done simply because the child is not wanted and the fetus survives the procedure. At what point if any do we need to be an advocate for an otherwise completely healthy infant that is fighting to stay alive?
  24. I am totally stuck!!! I am taking Ceramics this semester to fulfill my fine arts elective and am supposed to write a paper on some aspect of Ceramics. My instructor told me that I can write a paper about the use of Ceramics in medicine so that is what I really want to do. I have googled and searched the internet with about every word I can think of and have not been able to come up with anything useful. I thought about apothecaries using ceramic mortal and pestels to grind up the meds but when I googled about that all I came up with were apothecary jars. If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate the help.
  25. Let me start out by saying that this is not an attempt to start a debate on a abortions. Some of you may say that what I am going to say in this thread is an "urban legend" but I would still appreciate knowing if anyone has ever had this happen and what the legal response would be. When I was in high school several years ago I read an article that was supposedly written by a NICU nurse. In this article this nurse stated that she took care of a baby that was supposed to have been aborted yet somehow survived the procedure. I don't know what the baby's state was but this nurse stated that the mom didn't want anything done for the baby, no meds, no life-saving procedures, nothing. She said that somehow this baby made it through the first few hours and was fighting to survive yet the nurse wasn't allowed to do anything for the baby except watch her die. I am wondering if this is allowed and if so how as a nurse can I legally fight having to partake in something like this? Or does this even happen anymore? Thanks in advance.
