Congratulations!!! Im taking it you got an RN position then? Lucky duck!!! I am certainly not complaining about starting as a tech, as Im sure I will get some great experience...but...I cant AFFORD to work as a tech for long! I'll be working to pay for daycare for the time being! Grrrr!

Thanks! If you look back in thread, there is tons of info regarding W4 interview. I got hired on a different unit. I start Nov 7 and the interview for W4 was about an hour.

I got hired! It is my dream unit...as I will get trained and certified in oncology/chemo/critical care and cross trained for outpatient services after I transition to a RN on the unit. I applied for a clinical associate position and they emailed me and asked my interests. I interviewed for two units. I wore a suit to meet recruiting, they walked me to the unit and introduced me. I interviewed and then changed into scrubs for share time. Then I changed back into my suit, had lunch, and met back at recruiting so they could walk me to the next unit, and changed again after that interview. Whew! I never did wardrobe changes for an interview, but it worked out ok. For the UAP/RN position, they asked for two letters of recommendation; I brought 4. If you are a RN, you also need to bring sealed transcripts from your school. I spoke to a few other interviewees while waiting, all of whom were new grads as well. They run a new grad orientation qmonth, so I suppose they can afford to hire new grads. During the interview for the job I landed, she told me they actually prefer new grads on that specific unit to mold them and hold them to a higher standard, so that they dont have to unlearn any bad habits. Also, just about everyone I encountered my day there was SMILING, and were really nice. Best of luck!

I just wanted to update you...I got my first choice job on Oncology/BMT!!! Im ecstatic! It is for the UAP/RN position, which Im actually happy about because the responsibilities on this floor are intense. The info you gave me for the other unit really helped, but I was so overwhelmed and lost stamina with all those questions! Anyway, thanks again. I went in there confident, and walked out a winner. I cant wait!

W4A is a surgical unit, with a concentration on ENT and head and neck surgery. The interview was about an hour, with 2 hrs of share time. Overall, I like the unit. The interviewer told me she has about 6 other interviewees (You included!) and hopes to make a decision by the end of the month. HUGE let down for me. I honestly am not confident that I will get this job. I kind of got the feeling that since they just hired a few new grad nurses, they are looking for a long term tech on the floor. Also, if you are offered a position, you MUST have an active CNA. So I would get on it. Good luck! To update, the other unit I interview on is MY DREAM JOB! I feel like I nailed the interview, but I didnt hear anything back today, so I am really disappointed! I kind of expected that if they really wanted me, I wouldve heard back quickly. I am still hopeful, because I just KNOW this is the unit for me, and KNOW I would LOVE it. Also, every single person I encountered at JHH was super nice, and smiled. I KNOW I want to work at JHH!

@sb30 Based on the advice on the board, I called nursing recruitment, and was shocked someone actually SPOKE to me! They told me to apply for a nurse clinician I position or clinical tech. There were no NCI positions I was qualified for so I applied for the tech position. I received and email 10 minutes later seeking more info! Also, my GPA was 3.6. HTH.

Yes, that is really good to know. This way, If I dont hear by Friday, I will know I #failed! I also agree that getting in should be the hard part...moving around not as much. As long as they dont make you commit like 3 yrs on a unit, that would be tough to swallow. I can dig one or two though :) Thanks again for sharing ALL of this info. Im definitely less anxious knowing a lot of what to expect and what to prepare!

Im sure Hopkins' Psych is the real deal. I did a clinical rotation at a state hospital (bleh) and worked on a unit in a major teaching hospital in another city...likely accounting in such differences. I didnt mean to beat it up, because its a GREAT field, I think, as long as you are there for the right reasons. It sounds like you ARE in it to win it, and be a fantastic psych nurse. The hospital I worked at opened an adolescent unit while I was there, and a few techs I worked with transferred, they said they really liked it, but considered it a bit more difficult and completely different environment. It sounds like Hopkins really knows what theyre doing by separating so many specialties. My guess is that at some point, you would be cross trained to float on to the different units. Whew thanks for clarifying the 3 pages of questions! I imagined a booklet. Three weaknesses definitely wouldve thrown me off because I only speak of two in an interview. Lack of speaking another language is GENIUS! I may actually have to steal that! 4A still sounds interesting, and a really good start for a new grad. I did take care of two post-op modified neck dissection pts during clinicals, and I was pretty amazed about how they were able to reconstruct a face using tissue from the legs. Of course, I would be incredibly thankful on either unit I interview at, although 5C is an actual Onco unit and find more interesting. I know I would be great at either, and would be so happy to get my foot in the door. Otherwise, Im looking at filling out paper application a la McDonalds and co soon just to have some kind of paycheck in the mean time...christmas is coming and I have kids!

Wow, thanks for the info. Ugh...tons of trachs and strictly surgical huh...I would DEFINITELY be more interested on the strictly oncology floor, but I guess beggars cant be choosers. PAGES OF QUESTIONS?? Like typical "when was a time when you..." "How would you handle..." type questions? PS...trachs gross me out worse than poop shhhh dont tell anyone. Also, according to the actual oncology profile, there is a lot more further training for that floor, including BMT, chemo, and critical care. Psych huh? I worked in psych as a tech for a few yrs. Definitely has its pros and cons...you gotta really want to do it...so more power to ya, and have fun with it. Just please ENGAGE your pts. On my psych rotation, I didnt see ONE nurse talk to a pt more than 3 mins to pass meds. Not cool in my book, and certainly not like where I worked. Also, be careful not to become a pt. Many of the nurses I worked with, and psych instructors were a little off...lol On the other hand, you can really have a big impact! My interview is on Wednesday, so I have a few days to get it together. Did Weinberg offer you an RN position or UAP?

Thanks! With a little more digging I found out some info about each unit. The surgical IS Weinburg 4A, how did ya know? Is that one you interviewed with? The other one is Blood and Bone marrow transplant...FASCINATING stuff! That would definitely be my first choice. As with any interview, I know I need to have questions written down ahead of time, as well as generic answers thought out ahead of time. Like "tell me about a time when"...I am most nervous about SO MANY interview in one day...if they both are still on, that is at least 5 people I need to continually impress for 8 hours straight :kiss Also, Im thinking that I should also do some reading about oncology nursing...its always been and interest but I havent had much practice...maybe 4 pts total...and antineoplastics? Forget it, I dont know any. I atleast want to appear capable!

It sounds incredibly intense. I have one more question...what is a good way to research the units themselves? Ive looked at the website, and only get departments. FYI, both floors Im interviewing on are oncology, which I did say I was interested in. Also, just outta curiostiy, what was the turn around time for an offer in your case? BTW: CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Im so excited that I have an interview at Hopkins next week for a UAP/RN position. Im scheduled to meet with recruiter, and interview with two nurse managers and have share time on two floors. From 9-5! Longest. Interview. Ever. Im hopeful it will be a great experience, but Im definitely nervous! Im wondering... what to expect? The email says to "BRING" scrubs/comfortable shoes...does that mean I should show up in a interview clothes and change? That seems tacky. Does anyone have experience with share time? Are there any tests or clinical type questions the first day? Also, getting ahead...anyone accept this position and move to an RN position-how long? WHEW...so many questions....anyone have any input? Thanks!

So I thought i'd update! I called the recruiters office directly, and surprisingly got right through to someone. She told me to go ahead and apply for a Clinical Tech position. I did, and received an email back in like 10 minutes regarding being eligible for an UAP/RN position. I immediately replied with the requested info-my interests and 4 dates I would be available for an interview...woohoo!! Thanks OP! Now, I haven't heard back in a few days; I hope that means they are coordinating interviews/share days or whatever? What do you guys think? What has been your experience on the turnaround time

Its a tough market here, not sure how it compares to others. I am a new grad and have sent out approximately 50 applications, and have had only one interview, in which I didnt get the job. If at all possible, I would suggest holding off until you have that "golden" one year experience. With six months in home care, you would likely still be concidered new and need a whole fellowship.

This may seem like a silly question, but how did you apply for an UAP/RN position? Was it specifically posted like this, or did you apply for a regular tech position? T.I.A!

Thank you for your response. To clarify, I have no intention of being deceptive to the BON. In actuality, the state that the offense occurred in doesnt consider it to be a 'criminal' offense rather a traffic offense which doesnt show up on fingerprint checks as you are not arrested until your second offense and thereafter, therefore, I didnt consider it to be a potential issue. \ I am not looking for sympathy or any legal advice, as I am aware this is not the place to seek it. However, I was wondering if anyone in the state of MD has encountered a similar situation and how the BON handled it.

Hello all. Im wondering if anyone has any experience with the MD BON in this case. I will be graduating in 3 weeks and just NOW find out that having a DWI charge may prevent you from getting a license or require a probation period. The offense was just over a year ago, in another state. I really wish I had taken it to trial, but I couldnt miss more school to go back and forth for court appearances...Im so crushed

Hello all. I have a DUI charge only a little over a year old that I plead guilty to in another state. I hadnt even considered this being a potential breaking point for my new career! Any advice what I can expect when I apply for RN license in Maryland? I can not prove recovery bc I have never sought recovery means. I am an occasional alcohol drinker who made a VERY poor choice. SN: I truly believe in this profession, and believe in second chances.

Grrrr I know exactly what you mean! I think in every cohort, there will be some clashing personalities. My specific pet peeves: -Asking the instructor after every topic "whats on the exam?" -Using class time to ask questions about material that is explained in the text book, or next slide, when its obvious they read neither. Its not fair to those who spend hours doing the reading to have class time used as a study guide. Look at the book, then ask the questions. -Making comments or asking questions off topic. Im in an accelerated program which means classes are double time and time is limited. Stopping every so often to discuss how 'this could possibly happen' or 'what would happen if' or 'basically saying I'm a know it all and Id like to impress everyone with my knowledge so let me ask this question and start a debate'; it really takes away from material that needs to be presented, and then we can not even complete the class. Ive got 3 classes left to go. Best advice...speak up. We've gotten positive results by asking the teacher to emphasize that certain discussions should take place after class.

Please dont let others determine your future! You CAN do it, as long as you want it bad enough. It is no doubt a challenging feet that requires a lot of sacrifices. As long as you sacrifice the right things, you are good to go! My personal experience- i am a single mom of two boys, one of which iss intellectually impaired and has numerous health and behavior issuez. I worked full time on an acute psych unit in an inner city hospital during my prereqs. I took many online and of course it took me a bit longer. The outcome? I got a 3:8 gpa and got accepted into an accelerated clinical program whic im currently completing. Sure, your social life will suck, but it is VERY possible. Best of luck to you.
