I have a friend who was just hired by Tidewell. She loves it already and she just finished her 2 weeks of training in Sarasota. She says the benefits are out of this world and cost nearly nothing. She is a CNA til she gets her business associates degree. .

I hear CTC is great. I was going to take a test there recently to get my LPN and then wait on the RN list for MCC but I had one issue with CTC. Since the LPN is not a degree program but a certificate, I would have to take A&PI and II and all the other classes (gen. eds) I have already taken. They would make me do the entire program even though I was only 2 semesters from graduating the RN degree program in NH. I was a 4.0 student. there is no reason I should take all the gen/ eds over again. I was already accepted to MCC and they are making me take a math class (because I an transferring from out of state) and then I will be on the wait list for the RN program. That is more acceptable to me than taking every all over again. :)

Hi FL-Nurse. I think you may be referring to the MCC in Bradenton. That one is about a little more than an hour from North Port. But, the MCC in Venice is only about 15-20 minutes depending on where in North Port you live. Sarasota is at least 45 minutes away.

We moved to North Port from NH almost 2 years ago. I miss NH a lot but this is a nice quiet town. My husband built our house here and we bouth the land just before the prices went through the roof. now, the prices are way down and like someone else said, home owners are begging to deal right now. Now is the time to come here and buy a house. I was in nursing school for 3.5 years in NH and I moved here and they will not take my nursing theory credits as transfers at MCC. The school is only about 15 minutes away from me. (Venice branch) MCC does not take transfer students. They are making me retake the nursing theory's over again (2 classes) and then I will take the the other and I will be done. I finished all but those classes to finish the AS degree. I am on the wiat list and they say it is 2 years. We will see. I have excellent grades but MCC told me that that does not matter as they do not accept transfers. I have to go to the bottom of the list like everyone else. I am not worried about it though. There are so many hospitlas around here and since I have been a stay at home mom for so many years I thought I needed to go back and help my husband out with the bills. I am applying at a hospital in Port Charlotte as a PCA. I hope I get it. I am no longer CAN lisenced but I have the nursing school clinicals and previous CAN experience behind me. Wish me luck! well, I did it. I applied for a PCA position at a hospital. I even wrote the lady in charge whose e-mail i saw on the website with the on line application. I sent her my resume and I also filled out the application. I do not have my license but I told them I could take the test and get my CNA license if they would hire me and I will have to find the Red cross around here and take the BLS renewal training. I had one but it was for NH and it expired last year. I hope I get it. It is a third shift position. What I was so amazed with was all the RN and LPN positions I saw open for this hospital. It had to be like 30-40 positions to apply for and all departments! Too bad I don't have me RN yet!!

This thread may be old but I was looking up this topic and felt I needed to respond. Yes, trach care is the airway and I do think that a trained PCT could take care of it if the qualifications I have have seem for PCT's are true. While in nursing school, I did trach care first ion the lab and then in the hospital. It was my first semester of clinicals actually. Also, while I was a CNA/LNA 9 years ago I did home health. I took care of trachs all the time and it was a part of my job description to clean them and make sure there was no infection around the insertion site. Now, from what I gather, the qualifications for a CPT are at least a semester of clinical if you are a nursing student and if you are a cna then at least 6 months to a year of working as a cna. With this in mind, I have to say that it would be OK to do trach care if you were a PCT.

OK, I have read a lot about this but I have a question for anyone who knows anything about this. From what I read... a. you should have (and it is required for hire) at least 1 semester of clinical under your belt if you are an RN student (or LPN student) b. if you are a CNA/LNA then you should have at least 6 months to a year of experience behind you. I was a CNA/LNA for a few years before my kids were born and I quit. I then went to nursing school when my daughter was a year old. I took 3.5 years and was 2.5 semesters from graduation before my husband asked me to leave. I do plan on going back to finish very soon, but, in the meantime I want to get a job right now as a PCT as we need the money and it would help to pay for school. I have 2 semesters of clinical under my belt from school and I was a CNA/LNA with 4 years experience under my belt. (Home health and nursing home) Even though my cna/lna experience was about 9 years ago and my nursing clinical were last in the fall of 2005, do you feel that this should be enough for me to be able to call a human resources department and see if I would qualify to apply for a CPT position?? Any replies would be very helpful right now. thank you..

Thanks. This actually happened about 3 years ago. I guess the thread was bumped when I responded with a question to someone. hehe. I did not make excuses for the incident. I understand that the student is always wrong. I just accepted ti and moved on. I left school a semester after that because my husband wanted me to be home more. I am now going back to finish. I live in a different state now and they do not take transfers so I have to retake all my nursing theories and clinical but that is only 4 semesters and It will be nice to refresh. :) I am currently studying math right now from Algebra to Statistics in order to test out of the math class. My math credit was non-transferable. Bummer! Oh well. Always good to refresh. :)

All I know about it is what I have read on the threads here. I personally can't stand the sight of sputum and mucus and phlem. The only reason I was looking into it is because I have all me pre reqs done and all my gen eds done for the nursing program and I had even done 1.5 semesters of nursing theory and clinical before My husband asked me to leave school a couple years ago. My school here does not take transfers so I have to re-do all my nursing theory classes and clinical. on top of that I was told that it is a first come first serve basis to get in and it does not matter how good my grades are and what I have taken already. they told me yesterday that the wait is about 2 years right now and they said "you are smart, try out the RT program and then and then do the RN program" The problem is, my passion has always been to be an RN. I am not sure I could handle the RT stuff. But, I need to work right now and I have been a stay-at-home-mom too long so I really don't want to do anything Else's but RN. There is the dilemma. I think after reading the stuff here on allnurses, I may just wait out the RN program. I am not sure I would be happy with RT. What did you end up doing, btw?

I used to have one when I was on allnurses a couple years ago. I have recently rejoined the ranks of allnurses (long story why i left to begin with. Maybe another time...) and now my avatar is gone and I can't figure out how to put a new one up. I checked the control panel and everything.

OK, I know it has been a couple years since I posted this but I thought I would let everyone know what I ended up doing my paper and speech on. ready......*drum roll** It was forensic nursing. I found it very interesting and fun to do. I had lots of gory pictures of entomology and other things. I was the only girl in a class of guys in a "guys" communications class. I ended up with the highest A in the class too! he he! It was fun and I grossed out the guys which was a lot of fun!

Kylee45 Thanks!!~ I was a CNA a number of years ago (10 to be exact) I would love to do the PCT thing while I am in school to earn money to pay for school. :) Do you have to be trained specially for it or do you just have to have your CNA license and apply for it. I think maybe the 3.5 years of nursing school and 1 year of nurse clinical training might help me to get a job as a PCT. I will have to check the hospitals in my area and see if they have this job available. :)

Oh my goodness! You are so right! I know this is a couple years too late but sorry for all the typos. lol. I love that they have spell check on here now. That way if I am too tired I can check the spelling. :)

What is a PCT? You said you worked as a PCT and I am not sure what that is. Is it like an LNA?

Hi Lisa!! I did it! We, did it. We moved to FL a year and a half ago. We live in North Port now. There are some small docs offices here but the big hospital in Sarasota is going to build an emergency care hospital here in North Port very soon. I think the plans were this year or next they will start. I have been by the area and it looks like they have already cleared the land for it. yay! I had to leave school as my husband was not working and needed me to be home with the kids. I was 2.5 semesters from graduating! Grr. Anyway, he said I could go back now so I am checking out MCC in venice and their program. I hope to not have to retake too many of my classes as it was back in Spring 2005 that I left school. Are you in FL yet??
