Intubation
I can't understand how an anesthesiologist can say that it isn't their patient...???!!! The person that said that you are the best to intubate is crazy!!! I work in a hospital that delivers from 30 weeks on...of course we get younger at times and I go to resuscitations every night I work because I am on the resuscitation team and I strictly do babies and I have not felt like I have come across that many opportunities to intubate to say that it is a common procedure for me to perform.

Would you assist in abortions?
I am so glad to hear from the baby's perspective...because that is the real story that is missing....glad to hear that your mother's gave you life as a choice...exactly!!!! There is a human being destroyed in abortion.

Woman refuses CS, charged with murder
I was wondering...If she was mentally ill and on cocaine as well as etoh....how was she deemed competent by the hospital to sign for anything? It seems to me that she should have been considered unable to sign for anything. Maybe since she was under the influence of drugs and alcohol as well as being mentally ill she should sue the hospital for allowing her to make any decisions at all!!! She obviously wasn't able to make them with a sound mind....Honestly though based on the fact that she punched her toddler in the face several times years earlier I am glad that she is in prison. But that isn't the charge right now. I do think that when you are talking about religion as an excuse...what religion doesn't allow for surgery??? Is there one??? Based on the stories I have read she had said several times that she would rather her babies die than go to LDS hospital and things like that. It seems to me that she didn't really have much concern for the babies. It is interesting to me that so many people still disregard the baby as a human until it is born.. That really surprises me. I think if you could be in a delivery room and hold a 24 weeker or even younger you would see that it is a human inside there....they too should have rights.

Level I Nursery
Now I am thinking...shouldn't the high risk patients be delivering someplace else??? It seems to me that the high risk patients should be going to places with at least a level 2???

Level I Nursery
I have also worked in a place in a small town where there were no doctors in house. This was typical. They could get there if they knew in advance for a delivery but like the person stated before if there was no ped...the anesthesia department and the ob doctor were required to do this.... Before you resign you should voice your concerns through your chain of command...if you get no where with your hospital you can always file a complaint with JCAHO.

Would you assist in abortions?
Here is a question....what if Dad wants to have the baby???? and Mom does not??? Doesn't Dad have anything to say...any rights??? Can't get pregnant without sperm.... Why can't he get to chose to keep the baby he created??? Just wanted to get you thinking some more.

Would you assist in abortions?
I am not sure what you meant but ... if you haven't already done this then I ask that you actually plug in to your search engine "partial birth abortions" and look at what the procedure is and then tell me that you think that this is an acceptable procedure to perform on a baby and that just any person can do this. I imagine there can't be too many. Actually go to the National Right to Life site and it will give you pictures. Then tell me that this is just a normal day in nursing.

Would you assist in abortions?
NO.....I wouldn't but I want you to know that I am not against abortion but I am against the way an abortion takes place. There needs to be a more humane way to end a pregnancy than how they do it now. The other day I got the newspaper and the headline was that "some people" thought that lethal injection for prisoners on death row was inhumane and needed to be changed to something where they wouldn't suffer so much....So a lethal injection is inhumane but violently sucking a baby to pieces by vacuum is humane....or better yet taking a knife and cutting it to pieces is???....I wonder what pain the baby experiences when its legs are cut off and it hadn't died yet. I think if you saw the movie Braveheart you may have a small example of what it feels like to still be alive and have your guts ripped out. As far as partial birth abortions go I can't imagine what kind of person you would have to be to partially deliver a baby then suck its brain out in order for its skull to collapse so it can be more easily delivered and be assured that it would not be delivered alive. I don't think I could witness this....I could possibly accept the concept of an overdose of morphine or something where the baby falls asleep and eventually stops breathing and doesn't experience pain.

Baby switches
I have heard that it happened where I am and the nurse basically did not check the band. Of course, she was busy and that is what she said her reason for not checking it was. It is something that could easily be prevented by simply checking the bands.

Someone Please talk to ME....I am Brokenhearted
It is very difficult to handle situations like these. Why do bad things happen to good people???? You are correct. Some things we question over and over but I am not sure we are supposed to know the answer to all these things. Is there anything that you can take from this experience that is good? Did you go home and hug everyone in your life that you are thankful for? The hard part of nursing is dealing with heartbreaking experiences. It would be a sin for you to leave the OB department over feelings of sadness. It would be more of a benefit to the community that you are in to remain in your area because you are a good shoulder for a mother to cry on. You have been there yourself. You can show sympathy in a way that others cannot. You can understand how a mother feels in a way most cannot. You know what to say to her when most of us don't. I say she is lucky to have had a nurse like you to care for her. Why not use your deep feelings to improve upon the program in your hospital that deals with infant deaths. Improve the special items you give mom's when this happens. Write a poem that fits the situation and make it a foot print card for the unit to use. Or get some empty craft boxes from Michael's (the brown ones that need decorated) and create some that hold all the things you give to her to take with her as a rememberance of the baby. You get the idea.....take your experience and create some goodness from it.

Mother-Infant Coupling
One consultant...too many. A mother baby unit only works if it is strictly adhered to. Staff and families need to be aware of what is acceptable. I work in a well nursery and level 2 nursery. We go between each depending on our assignment. The unit is "supposed to be" a mother baby unit but mothers constantly send babies to the nursery at night. One question for you....how can you accept one baby and not another's??? In reality no baby can be turned down at the nursery door. What ends up happening is that even though you call it mother baby it doesn't happen that way. I wish you could get a different consultant but I bet no matter what information you present you will be forced into this. I strongly reject the idea of only one RN. That is not acceptable because as you stated you will still be responsible for the stabilization of infants prior to transport.....what if there are 2 requiring transport???? Even the best trained L&D nurse will not be much help in this area. If you do it....in writing a plan must be in place with specific information on which circumstances allows a baby to go to the nursery and who watches over the babies when the one and only RN needs to eat, go to the bathroom or has to handle a sick baby. Keeping in mind that unlicensed assistive personel no matter how good they are...can never equal an RN.
