question about CCRN, PASS CCRN, and the self assessment exam
you need 70% to pass. so one month out you are doing great!! make sure you understand the rationale why you get the questions wrong or even right and you will begin increasing your score I was getting in the 60s in some of my categories two weeks prior to my exam. Keep focused and determined! You will do great!! If you can find behavioral questions as examples, try those. A lot of people get tricked on those, even though you would think it would be the easiest. Best of luck!!

CCRN exam prep
Well I took the CCRN exam today and PASSSSSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :clpty: I do not want to take another one of those again. In my test they asked at least 5 questions about acute lung injury. Know, know, know, your swan ganz values. They asked 2-3 questions about early stage of sepsis. Difference between SIADH and DI...with those know the serum osmolalities and urine osmos in particular. I had a lot of nuero questions I felt, but I can't pin point any of those, prolly in part how I didn't do well in that portion. A few of the questions on Professional Caring portion were hard as you can tell by my score. Differentiate between R vs L heart failure. That is about all I can remember. Hope this helps! Scores: 1 m.o. before couple days prior day of exam Cardio 70% 68% 76% Pulm 62% 73% 91% Endo 100% 89% 83% Hema 75% 50% 100% Neuro 40% 60% 60% Gastro 83% 50% 86% Renal 63% 25% 88% Multi 75% 75% 70% Prof/Car 83% 83% 68% Behavioral 80%

Can I bolus this patient? A legal / practice question about sedatives and narcotics
I have been told recently that we are no longer able to bolus propofol b/c it is an anesthetic and is only used for anesthesiology to handle if bolusing needed. Those regulations came after the death of Michael Jackon, coincidence? At my last institution, are prime sedatives were versed and fentanyl, with a max at 20mg/hr. We did chart when we gave boluses, along with propofol boluses. That was one year ago, and unfortunately I moved and am no longer with them So I wonder if the new propofol "law" has affected them as well. It was important to document when the patients needed a "lil helper" of a bolus, b/c that is really all they needed at the time you needed to provide nursing care and stimulate them. No need to increase the gtt 2-5ml when it won't affect them for another 15-30 min in most cases. By that time you would have been done with your assessment, bath, etc. Doctors take note to realize how "crazy" the patients are and how much the patients truly need the sedation. If they do not see the boluses documented they will think we always have these nicely sedated patients that smile at us when we do our patient care, instead of kicking at times when they walk the other direction. Get with your nurse educator to determine what the protocol is. Hopefully everyone can come up with something within a nursing scope of practice to make everyone happy

Do you stop vasopressors(/inotropes) during a code?
Keep in mind that every hospital has a different MAX to their vasopressors and sedation. Not every hospital has the same concentration for instance. I transferred from one hospital where their MAX on versed and fentanyl gtts was 20mg/hr each to a hospital that was only 5mg/hr. Odd I know. Also there was a vast difference to the vasopressor MAX as well.

Anyone else studying for CCRN exam?
remember that everyone retains information differently. I have heard some ppl study for one year to 6 months all the down to only 2 weeks. It is what you are comfortable with. I have been given good personal advice that with a 300 question test you should not be studying for a long period of time e.g. > 3-2 m.o. b/c you will not retain all the information by the time you take the test. Commit yourself to the test and study. If there are categories you are weak in (like cardio for me) then go over that material the most. Read the chapter, take notes or flash cards. I have read all the posts on this thread and the majority rules that you should do the questions on PASS CCRN and if you still don't understand the question then read it in the chapter. Don't spend a year studying. Are you really going to remember everything in a year from now? Just remember what you did in nursing school for a 100 question test. You studied for 1 1/2 weeks. Or even the NCLEX. I know this is much harder, but you get the drift. Hope this helps!!
