Manatee Community College - Bradenton
I had considered that for those exact reasons. But, alas, I must sleep. My social worker job keeps me busy 40 hours/week. I REALLY wanted to take this summer's break from school and work in an ER as a tec, but I needed a break to re-charge before nursing school starts. I've been working full-time (and LOTS of overtime) for Uncle Sam while doing the EMT-B, paramedic, A&P's, psychology's, microbiology night school thing all in a row. It's been a LONG last 2 years ! Doctor's Hospital wanted me to work as a tec in their ER this summer, but I just needed to do my regular job & go home for once. Night nursing school will be a challenge (I'm already looking forward to next summer's break --- hah, hah). If I just didn't need to sleep, I could work as an ER tec like I want to & then just seamlessly transfer to an RN position once I pass the NCLEX.

THANK YOU for the encouragement. ER RN's do seem to be in high demand. I am hoping I can parlay my EMT-P & all my "alphabet soups" (ACLS, PALS, BTLS, etc) into an immediate ER position upon graduation. I also have to work around my full-time job. I am hoping to work a couple 3pm-3am ER shifts each week -- will be a nice "break" from being desk-bound all day. I just wish I could push some mystical "fast forward" and get thru school !!! (hee, hee)

THANK YOU for the info !! Are you guys (well Renee's husband)attending the July 14th orientation ? (I'll be the blue "H" ballcap wearing, unkempt, rough looking character in the back of the room) I live right off of Bee Ridge --- Doctor's Hospital is about 1 mile from my condo. I will be an ER nurse at either Sarasota Memorial or Doctor's once I graduate & pass the NCLEX. I met ************ while doing my OB clinicals for paramedic school at MMH. I did about 300 hours between MMH & Blake for paramedic -- spread between OB, Psych, ICU, OR (dropping tubes on people), and the ER. LOVED working at MMH (not so much at Blake), but the commute from Sarasota is too great to actually work there unless I move to Bradenton. SMH is 1/4 mile from my full-time job & Doctor's is right around the corner from where I live. SMH has the new GORGEOUS ER department. It was fun to bring patients there on the ambulance ! (got to play with all the new gear) Working full-time & going to school (I haven't won the lottery yet) will be a challenge, but I managed a rougher class schedule in paramedic night school. Thanks for letting me know who is who for the clinical instructors. SarasotaRN2B: Are you transferring in from USF or do you have to take all 4 semester ?

I will be starting MCC's new evening basic RN program this fall. Just seeing if there are any current or entering fellow-MCC-RN students on the site. Would like to hear from any graduates as well --- who is a good instructor, what to watch out for, clinical issues in the Manatee area, etc. I am a 33 y/o single guy. Former Marine, current paramedic & federal social worker. Always wanted to be a nurse (not a "male nurse" - just a nurse) = pumped about starting !

Why did you take up nursing? What's your story?
I will be starting an evening ADN program this fall. I'm a paramedic & a federal social worker & I have wanted to be an RN since I met some seriously bad-ass US Navy RN's while serving in the Marines. They were just as tough as me, could drink like me & fight like me ---- that was when I knew it would be "OK" to be a "tough-guy" AND an RN. :roll Got into med school, but decided that wasn't for me (neither law school either) --- have wanted to be an RN & nothing else will suffice. Can't get thru school fast enough -- the ER's I have worked in as an EMT-P will hire me the second I pass the NCLEX !
