  1. Hello- New York University in New York City has a Holistic NP program...check their website. http://www.nyu.edu/nursing/academicprograms/masters/programs/holistic.html It looks really interesting... Good Luck!
  2. hello- i will have been a nurse for two years in february of 2007, and i began my career in the er. i think the er is the perfect place for a new grad because you literally see everything and get to develop strong assessment skills and advanced critical care nursing skills...i think it's only the perfect place when the new grad is exceptionally mature and the orientation program is tailored to the individual's needs(mine was 6 months, including a critical care course). i have definitely had the experience of having older nurses turn against we new grads, but most have been accomodating and helpful. the docs in my er really love us because they say we have fresh, positive attitudes and are willing to learn..this has sort of set the new grads against the old nurses. my experience has been great because the staff is so supportive, but the acuity level in my ed is really high and so that part is stressful. if you need to know anything else, just ask!
  3. I work nights in a busy ED in Washington, DC....my personal limit is 6 patients (which I frequently have), but I have taken up to 7 at a time once....yeah, transfusing 3 GI bleeds at once is no fun. I would LOVE to only have to worry about 4 patients.
  4. Hello- There's one at Ohio State University: http://www.con.ohio-state.edu/programs/snp.htm Good Luck!
  5. Just found out that I passed! What a relief! I was absolutely certain that I failed. Computer cut off at 75 questions. I scored 73% on the Kaplan test and was pretty much in the 70-80% range on all my practice exams. Good luck!
  6. I have a friend who found out she passed last week, and she had 265 questions. Hang in there!!!
  7. That seems like really good advice that I will take to heart.
  8. Will school districts hire new grads as school nurses, or do you have to have experience?
  9. I am in the process of interviewing for jobs in Maryland, and although I'm getting lots of offers I had one recruiter tell me that there is NO nursing shortage in the State of Maryland. I haven't heard of other new grads having trouble getting their first choice for jobs in MD, so that seems to contradict what he said, but whatever ....hope this is helpful!
  10. You know, none of them seem to be concerned about prescriptive authority being taken away ... more about the birthing centers closing and even hospital-based midwifery services closing, based on the malpractice issue. Several midwives in this area have lost their jobs because of the insurance issue and although they are anxious at the moment, seem to think the situation will improve....they're just not sure when! And yes, midwifery care has increased (at least based on a figure I saw from acnm.org). :)

hi jeremy- your response is quite helpful. are you a cnm? thanks, alicia
  12. What are the people at Frontier forcasting in terms of the malpractice issue, prescriptive authority and future of midwifery in the US? Everything I hear from Maryland CNMs is quite negative.

I am in nursing school because I want to become a CNM ... but now that I've begun my practicum in L&D I am growing concerned about birth in the hospital environment. It's so medicalized and the most vulnerable populations seems to have the toughest time (and I want to work with vulnerable populations) having positive outcomes. If I'm a CNM, will I even be able to work with these populations since CNMs have to work with low-risk women? I am also in the process of figuring out if it's more important for me to support families before and after the birth (what I'm envisioning a WHNP does) or if I really, really, really want to be a part of the birth as well (the CNM role). I also have concerns about the lifestyle of a CNM .. taking call, leaving home at any hour, extremely high malpractice insurance costs, etc.. Does anyone know the major differences between CNM and WHNP roles? And what about salaries? Everyone I've spoken with says to remain an RN because they make more money than NPs and only work 3, 12 hr shifts ... Thanks for your help!
