  1. Sorry I haven't been on here to give my thanks to you all....so THANK YOU!! I started orientation last week and have been busy! This week will be my last of classroom stuff, so I'll start on the unit the 22nd. Aymese, thanks so much! We actually have to take ACLS within a year of hire. Our first day on the unit is spent rotating through the cath lab, ER, and telemetry room, as well as, sitting in with the coordianator and along side the unit secretary. I have already taken a basic EKG interpretation class, however it did not cover 12-lead so I'll look into that. LaurenicoleRN, the manager and assistant manager seem great. I am very excited to get to work with them. Their unit has a low turn over rate for nurses so that gives me hope the people are happy!
  2. New grad in Florida, 1st job, day shift: Base - $18.59 Evening diff (3-7p) - $3.50 Night diff (7p-7a) - $5.00 So from 7a-3p I'll make 18.59 and from 3p-7p I'll make 22.09. Not sure about weekends yet, I start next week.
  3. Thank you Minnie2006! The manager told me it was very fast paced and I feel as though I should be studying!! I will have 1 week of hospital orientation, 1 week of nursing orientation, and then 6-8 weeks on the unit. You advice has been very helpful!
  4. Hello all! I am anew grad and start orientation next week for a busy cardiac unit. I was wondering if any new and/or experienced RNs have any advice for this type of area. I will be working 12 hr days on a 38 bed unit. I am super excited to get started, but intimidated at the same time because I never thought of myself starting out here. The heart definetly intrigues me so I am excited to get the opportunity to learn more about it. Thanks so much!!
  5. When you get ready for NCLEX you can choose which state you would like to be licensed in. I think there is a little more paperwork that has to be done for an out-of-state license..not sure. I graduated in AL and opted to sit for AL and then did a license by endorsement for FL b/c I wasn't sure which state I would be working in. I live really close to the state line and was applying for jobs in both states. It was a good choice b/c I got hired on in FL. I would say if you know you are going work in GA, sit for GA. If not, get AL and do the license by endorsement. You should be able to find all the info for that on GA's BON website. GOOD LUCK!! :anpom:
  6. i'm not sure about all areas but I got hired on in the pensacola area. i graduated in may passed boards in august through alabama, and received my license by endorsement with FL in september. 2 weeks later I had a job! i worked with a wonderful nurse recruiter who helped me a lot.
  7. 1. when did you graduate? may 2010 2. do you have a bsn or adn? adn and have been working on my bsn since august 3. are you still looking for work? no. 4. if not, how long did it take you to find a job? from the time i got my license, a total of 1.5 months. i received my alabama license in august and my florida license in september. i live close to the state line so i got both. i got hired on in florida within 2 weeks of receiving my license. 5. if you don't mind my asking, those who are working, what type of job or floor do you work on. cardiac unit at a 466-bed acute care hospital.
  8. Applied, applied, applied!! I put in close to 100 applications and talked to numerous HR departments before landing my first interview and job offer. I also have licenses in 2 states since I live so close to the state line, I have taken classes at hospital close to my house to further my certifications, and started my RN-BSN in August. The hiring manager seemed impressed with the fact that I wasn't sitting around doing nothing. I am a new grad with NO experience it the health field. The hospital that hired me was one I was super interested in and I began talking with the recruiter back in April before I graduated. I made sure to talk to her a couple of times a month and keep her updated on what I was doing. I credit her a lot with landing my job.
  9. Thanks so much ya'll!
  10. South Alabama area....Graduated May 2010, passed boards in August, licensure by endorsement for Florida in September, went on 1 interview, and will start my first job (in Florida) on October 25th.
  11. Thank you!! I hope I love it too!! It sounds like it will be a great place to start learning!
  12. So I had my interview Wednesday and was offered the job on Friday!! SUPER EXCITED!! I will be working at the hospital I was hoping to and will be on the cardiac/telemetry unit. Out of a FT days and FT nights position, I was offered the days so it couldn't have been better! My husband is also an RN who works baylor weekends so this will work perfect for us and our 4 y/o. The manager said it is very fast paced and keeps you on your toes, so it sounds like a great place to start. Any advice for a new grad starting of this type of unit? Also, new grads, don't give up! You will find that someone to give you a chance. I moved from Birmingham to Foley with no ties to anyone here and landed the first interview I went on. Get to know your nurse recruiters...the one I worked with has been fantastic and I give her a lot of credit to helping me find this position. I applied off of her advice to do so. It is do-able, I promise!! Thank you to everyone for your encouragement and words of wisdom!
  13. Thanks gigi01!! I'll know tomorrow for better or worse. If not, then I am looking into applying for a nurse residency program through the same hospital. I hear it is a great place to work regardless of where you are so I am hoping for the best!! Good luck with your residency!! We actually just relocated after I graduated in May so I am licensed in Alabama and Florida b/c we live so close to the state line. The interview was with a hospital in Florida.
  14. So after countless applications I have finally gotten an interview!! It feels as though I have waited forever since I graduated in May. But, in all reality I just passed boards in August for Alabama and have been approved for my Florida license for 2 weeks. My interview is in Florida at a great hospital from what I understand so I hope it goes well! To all my fellow new grads....don't give up and keep on trucking! I have been helping take care of my father-in-law for the past 2 months and now that things are better with him, I am getting interview calls. The old saying, "Everything happens for a reason" is just that. You just have to keep moving on and someone will snag you when the time is right!
  15. I graduated in May and started my BSN classes in August. I plan to take a year off b/t my BSN and Masters. I have not had any luck finding a job so far so at least with classes I feel as though I am not losing my nursing knowledge gained in RN school! I am attending Jacksonville State University's STEP program (RN-BSN) and am enjoying it so far. You have to pass boards before you can be accepted, but they do let you start with 3 outstanding pre-reqs...my only one is chemistry. It is completely online, no having to go to campus at all.
