Do NPs get training?
I'd prefer not to post too much information, but it is a specialty practice. I was given a VERY different version of how things would start the first couple of months (eg. severity of patients, amount of time booked per patient, the fact that each pt would be presented) and so I wanted to know the general experience of others. I see that it's a combination of factors, including poor clinical experience contributing to a lack of confidence. It is sink or swim. Thank you all for your replies!

Do NPs get training?
Hello. I'm a new grad FNP and just started working about 1 month ago. I was able to shadow the MD one week prior to starting. When starting, I then saw my own patients and would present the cases to the MD so he could diagnose and create the plan. Now I am expected to be able to manage the simpler cases by myself . I take about half an hour per patient. I am constantly having to ask questions and find it very time consuming to look up things while the patients are waiting. I'm just wondering how other new grads were introduced into their new role. I feel unprepared.

University of Miami FNP Program
Hello- information can be found on their website: http://www.miami.edu/sonhs/index.php/sonhs/academics/master_programs/family_np/admission/. I recommend getting all of your information in as early as possible. The GRE is not required for the program. I got in with a GPA of of 3.73, but I'm not sure what the min. GPA is. You could also call the school. I found them to very helpful and professional. Can anyone who has graduated from the program or anyone who is currently in the program tell me how they feel about it? It looks like a great school. My only concern is the cost. I went to a cheaper school to get my RN degree and I can honestly say that the quality of the nurse depends more on who they are then where they went. Is it the same for the NP program? I ask because I am undecided as to whether to go to FIU or UM. Thanks for the advice!!

FNP school recommendations in Miami, FL
Hi- I just got into their full time program. The interview was quite straight forward and seemed to just be a verification of your application. There weren't very many questions- Why FNP? Why UM? How do you view the future of the profession? How do you deal with different cultures? It was all pretty straight forward. Just be honest and go in with a positive attitude. I'm trying to decide between FIU and UMs FNP program. Can anybody offer any insight?! Thank you!!

FNP-FIU vs UM
Hello! I was wondering if any FIU NP students could give me some insight! I've been accepted into UM and FIU's FNP programs. Due to cost, FIUs program is looking like the better option, but my only concern is that the school does not select preceptors for you and UM does. Have you FIU students had a difficult time finding preceptors? If so, would you say it is worth the extra cost to go to UM? Thanks for the replies!

MDC vs Nova
congratz npachon! That's great news! When I had applied, they had told me that they did not offer it but I think now they only offer it once a year instead of two. Sorry for any confusion!

It's five semesters so if you start in January of 2012 you'll be an RN (with an associates) by like April or May 2013.

I'm exicted! What are we supposed to wear to class? And is anyone actually buying the shoes from the bookstore or just wearing white sneakers? Check your degree audits! Mine is a mess. There's several classes that I have taken that says have not been met and it states that I have completed some nursing classes lol.

Just to make sure, they give us our schedual, right? We don't have to sign up for it online. Also, when does everything have to be submitted by? Oh, and do we need to bring anything to the orientation? On Eagles Wings: I sort of live in that area. Send me a message and maybe we can figure it out if we end up with the same schedual. Now I'm wondering though if it ends up being faster to go to the Homestead campus since traffic around the Medical campus is so awful. It's probably too late to switch though.. P.S. 16 books :/ ... sounds fun! haha

MDC vs Nova
I hope the program is hard at MDC and they try to weed out the weak first. It will mean that they take their program very seriously. MDC doesn't offer the Baptist scholarship anymore because of budjet costs. They do however offer another scholarship that will pay for your entire tuition. The only catch is that you have to work 10 hours a week for them. For those of that are going to continue past a BSN I think it's a better going to MDC. The time will come to go a fancy school when we need out Master's . I actually still haven't heard back from Nova! At this point I want to know just because I'm curious. I'm guessing though that I did not make it in since I'm still taking summer courses. It's going to be a tough road for all of us in the long run. It's nice to see all of the support on the website though, rather than competition. We're all coming from different backgrounds and have strengths in different areas but either way we're going to have to study for this test every single day while trying to survive clinicals. It's very exciting to start!

Pomkayya, I would be careful because when I was signing up for the CPR/BLS course I think I saw some options for just the CPR course. Eagles, wow, thank you so much! Yeah, I'm sure they won't care if my criminal check is a little later. I'm gonna keep checking to see if anyone cancels just in case though. I really wish I would've started this whole process earlier ...

Is anybody else really confused about the things we need to get done:/ ? It seems like a really long list and I could use some help! Here's what it seems like so far.. 1) Go to Bursar's office and pay $100 and get reciept 2) Go to nursing department and give them the reciept with the response form 3) Get the unpaid schedual they'll give you and go to the Bursar's office to pay for it. 4) Create ATI student account online 5) Get criminal background check by making the appointment online (the first available appointment is for July 27th though!!!). And I don't think you're supposed to pay online so make sure you choose the option to pay the Bursar's office when you make the appointment cause you'll need three copies. 6) Make sure you are CPR/BLS certified (The next available session is for July 17th!!). I told the lady on the phone and she said that you need a copy verifying that. That means you have to drive there just to make the appointment. And now I don't know where to get the documentation of MMR and Variecella immunization, drug panelling and TB skin tests. Am I missing anything else (besides the two mandatory meetings)? THANKS!!!

MDC vs Nova
I've decided on attending MDC. It will just be an extra step to get a bachelors. In the end I want to be a nurse practitioner so that means I will have to get my Masters degree. That's a lot of schooling and if I have to pay $18,000 for tuition plus all the extras (and there's a lot with books, gas, uniform, etc.) it is just a better idea to take the cheaper option. I do wish the staff at MDC was kinder...it's such a different story to find information when you call MDC or go on their website as compared to Nova. I'm sure MDC will have a lot to offer and in the end it depends on the nurse to study and practice not where he/she goes! It's an honour for all of us to have been accepted into a nursing program. Thank you both for your words of encouragement and advise. Good luck to both of you!!! See you in the program "on eagles wings"

NSU EntryBSN Program Fall 2010
I just called right now and they said my application is still pending. They said we should know by the end of the week and when I said "I thought it was by Wednesday" the gentlemen on the phone replied with "Yes, that's the middle of the week". :/ How condescending. It better be by tomorrow and not Friday because I'm losing patience! Good luck everybody!

MDC vs Nova
Thank you so much! I see your point of view...I don't want to go to a school just because it seems fancier and then be thousands of dollars in debt. But I'm assuming since Nova is a private school that they have more money and therefore access to better things like technology. I know Nova had a great passing rate last year but I'll have to check out MDC's. The education I recieved from MDC for my pre reqs wasn't even that great. I feel like I was challenged more and and learned in highschool than I did at the college! But that's not to say their nursing program is necessarily bad so I guess if money isn't an issue then I'll have to research which experience would be better for me. Do you know anybody that is in the program or has completed it at MDC? What did they have to say about it? Good luck in the program and congratz on your acceptance!

MDC vs Nova
I'm a student at MDC and am hoping to become a nurse practioner. I have been accepted into MDC generic entry level nursing program for nursing as well Nova;s BSN program. I'm unsure as to which I should attend. Any thoughts? Which is a better education? What is the length of both programs? Pros of MDC: It's cheaper and closer. Cons of MDC: It's in a bad neighborhood and you don't graduate with a BSN. First you get an A.S and then have to get your BSN. Pros of Nova: Beautiful campus Cons of Nova: It's far and very expensive (but you can get the baptist scholarship) In the end, all students end up taking the same test so a lot of your career will depend on your actions. Your education does, however, make a difference. So which to choose??

Any Miami Dade College students going for the acceler. or Generic option fall 2009?
I got accepted this week into the generic and fulltime program but am waiting to hear from other schools before I make my decision. I don't like the fact that you only end up with an associates and and not a bachelors so I have some thinking to do. Good luck to everybody =]

NSU EntryBSN Program Fall 2010
For those of you who have been accepted, congratulations!!! ALSO, have you guys completed all your pre-reqs? Or are you still taking summer classes? Im curious because I have applied and am taking my last courses: A&P and sociology and wondering if it will affect my chances of getting in for the fall. Also, when did they say you will hear back from Baptist to know if you recieved the scholarship?
