  1. I have heard that one of the larger hospitals in Spokane is short on nurses???
  2. I applied for WA llicense in Jan, got the temp. Had to redo fingerprints, that was 3 months ago and I am still waiting for my permanent. Have called twice and have been told that FBI is slow ... temp expires mid-July: the Board have said that they will extend my temp. I sent them my original application together with the AIDS Course Certificate.
  3. I have worked in Florida and now in California ... I cannot wait to get back to my home base in New England. Life there is so much better than in either of the two states I have mentioned.
  4. They have got too big for their boots. My recruiter has been "brainwashed" by superiors, or is it that she has been there so long, that she has the company way engrained in her. I have had reason to call and complain about my current assignment, she gives me the impression that she is on my side, but ultimately, Cross Country's interests come first. I have heard from other travelers that they know someone who asked for the "extra" somthing at Cross Country and got it ... not me. I am looking to switch out from them after many years ..especially now that they have once again changed who runs their 401K .. much to our detriment.
  5. the CA BoN is asking me for a Microbiology course ... I was educated in Canada and took the NCLEX (as well as the CNA/CNO Exam - over a decade ago, have had my license endorsed to over half a dozen states and now CA is asking for this course. When I look at the outline for Microbiology, some of it was included in Nursing Theory .. the CA Board also returned my call after I left a message, sent an email and a fax!! I would like to know if my studies were acceptable to CGFNS/Visa Screen and for writing the NCLEX, why now this?? I have really lost interest ... it took them 3 months to issue me with an endorsement. They are going through a tough time, with non-paid days off (and so far it has added up to a month of pay less), so I sympathize with them on that, but don't pass that onto me ... like good nurses, we have to treat our "clients" with respect, but I think that the CA BoN is scrutinizing every little course ... I would feel very different if I was newly licensed ... but not under my circumstances.
  6. I graduated in Ontario 15 years ago and have been working in the US for the last 13 - mostly in the North. I would suggest you try Travel Nursing this way you are only obligated for 13 weeks and can renew or extend if you so wish. I have done 2 x 13 week contracts in Florida's east Coast in what I thought were affluent communities, but the staffing ratios were horrible. I do not know how the regulars put up with it ... I have never been to Texas, though nearly ended up there until a friend of mine brought me to my senses! As for Travel Nursing companies, do you research, use Hypodermic Highway to see which are judged better and do your own research online and different web sites (including Better Bureau for the location of the agency). Good luck.
  7. I got my Visa Screen over a decade ago, when things were much easier. Now they have an expiry date and so are valid for 5 (?) years. I was wondering at what College your wife did her nursing training as I wrote the NCLEX right out Nursing School for another state and have been working in the US for more than 12 years and now find that to be fully licensed in California I need Microbiology ... though from what I am reading in the Micro course, this was covered in Nursing Theory ... just curious if your wife has had that problem. Thanks.
  8. Technically speaking, every week you should be getting about $250 tax free - over and above your housing - this is the perdiem, tax avantage program. Depending on your age, whether you are head of household (single parent), this is a big disadvantage, but it has been sugar coated to look good. I loose about >#500 per month between 401K and SOcial Security ... yet I have NO choice ... even if I do not want tax advantage, I still have to take it. It is the agency's way of charging the hospital less in these difficult times ... yeah!!!
