I try to remind myself that it may not be an emergency from my point of view, but it's an emergency for the patient. I take a calm deep breath and apologize to the patient/family and usually try to do something more to comfort them. But, their are those patients who you just can't help, and I just take it with a grain of salt. One of my fellow nurses actually got punched in the face when he inserted a foley into a guy, the nurse didn't really respond and just left and got the on duty police officer. The guy with charged with assault and arrested in the room. Yay for the Police.

I came right out of nursing school to a Level 1 and did great. I had a 3 month long orientation that worked out well. We had 11 new grads hired and we all love it and are doing well.

I got hired straight out of nursing school to a Level 1 Trauma Center in Lubbock, TX. Great staffing, and a wonderful place to work.

I work in Level 1 and our staffing is awesome; we don't have to worry about census. We are really team oriented. Usually if I have a trauma room I'll have that room only, or maybe another acute room. Max load for critical care is 3:1 Minor care is about 4:1

Come to Texas. I'm getting nursing school paid for by a hospital, after graduation I will only have to work for them for two years. People are right, there is no way to tell what it will exactly look like in five years. However, there is a shortage of nurses right now and it is predicted to be a shortage of nurses for at least another 10 years. I always look at hospitals where I want to live and check the current job openings, as of right now there are a lot, if your willing to go to them. Think big cities.
