  1. Hi all :)So, I graduated school 9 months ago, May will make a year. I've been working on an inpatient psych unit & I have an interview on a surgical floor. I've been applying all over looking for a job on a medical unit & I'm so excited for my interview---but I'm nervous as heck. I've gone on two med/surg interviews ...one of which I bombed. My question to you all is what can I do to prepare for the interview. I feel as if I am going to draw a blank when asked scenario questions "what would you do if...." & similar questions along those lines. I feel like I'm definitely not as keen to answering these questions as I was when I first graduated. I really want to do well on my interview. Any advice on what to brush up on?
  2. Hi all :) I am a new grad working in psych. I'm on the hunt for a med surg job and I need some advice as to what I can do to use my psych experience to help get a med surg job. I'd like to think I have some sort of advantage over a new grad with no job. I'm wondering what duties/responsibilities of a psych nurse I can hilight (and put on my resume) that would really translate well in a med surg setting. Thanks
  3. Hey everyone! So I am starting orientation at my first job next week! I'll be working on an inpatient adult psychiatric unit. I am wondering if I should do anything to prepare for this. Should I go over drugs, or anything? I sold my psych text book but I do have my drug book. I feel like it has been a long time since I've done anything nursing (graduated in May) and it's been even longer since I've had psych nursing. I'd like to be fully prepared and rock out when I start my new job! Thanks :)
  4. Hey all.. I am just wondering if any of you have been interested in a nursing job outside of psych and if you find that it is difficult to get a job in med/surg (or something similar). My first job offer is psych, and I accepted it. I am excited about it. But as a new grad, I'd like to still have a med/surg or position on some type of floor outside of psych. I am not sure if it is difficult to get a job outside of the specialty and what you have to do to stand out when you don't have experience in that area.
  5. I deactivated my FB as soon as I got off the phone with the Nurse Manager. The very next day I was online looking for jobs and found out about an open house at a psychiatric hospital the following day (yesterday). I went to the open house and this morning at 9 am they called me and offered me a 24 hour/week job. I am very excited! Especially after all that has happened. I guess everything happens for a reason. Now I am on a quest to find a per-diem job outside of psych! I don't want to limit myself. I'm still not going to reactivate my facebook, Ill stay off it for while! Browsing allnurses.com is enough internet action for me!
  6. My cop friend did not lie to me. I was at the school bringing him a coffee when the administrator came in and gave him the name of two students who got into a fight. She said there had been reports that someone recorded it and posted it on facebook and she wanted him to check their FB to see if anything had been posted. He did not hack into the account or get into their personal account, he just accessed the account as if he was on their friends list and able to see their posts.
  7. It was a friend who posted on my wall, and I commented, my settings were such that only people on my friends list can see posts on my wall by friends. But people can get into accounts regardless. I am not sure how it works in hospitals but my friend works as a police officer in a school and can see anyone's account and information regardless of their privacy settings without needing to be their friend. I tried to find the comment, but it is a year old and I couldnt even find it myself. I dont know how they did, but they did.
  8. I deactivated my account, immediately
  9. So I applied and interviewed at the three local hospitals, which are collectively part of one hospital system. One of the hiring managers hired me, and said that human resources would follow up. The other two hospitals also told me that human resources would be in touch with me either way. A month and a half later I have not heard from anyone. I called several times and never had my message returned. Finally I got in touch with the manager who hired me and she told me that I posted on facebook a year ago the following: Someone wrote on my wall asking where I'd like to work when I graduate. I responded saying my dream job would be at ******* but it's a long commute so I would settle for *******. I'm leaving out the names, but I said I would settle for working for the local hospital group, which just so happens to be the three places I interviewed. The manager said it is out of her hands and she doesn't know if I have the job or not. Never in a million years did I think this would come back to bite me in the butt. I am VERY careful about what I do on social media. No alcohol, no swearing, none of that. I am so upset. Now it's almost 7 months since I graduated, I thought I had a job, and I don't. I'm worried that I will never find a job. The more time that goes by the more nervous I am and the less confident I feel I would make a good nurse. Which leads me to my next question... Is there anything I can do while I am waiting for a job? I'd volunteer my time if it meant I could use and learn some skills.
  10. I failed the first time. What helped me to pass the second time was to do questions ALONE. I used the Saunders Q&A book and sent my son away to do errands (grocery shopping) or any little thing like that. Any time that I could get an hour or two of quiet time, undisrupted, I took it. And I meticulous did question after question, reading the correct answers and rationals. I completed the entire book. Just over 1,000 questions. Took me two weeks. I got 60% of the answers right in the book. I was sure Id fail the nclex but I passed. DO QUESTIONS. They say one to two thousand. This is the book i used: Saunders Q & A Review for the NCLEX-RN® Examination,5e (Saunders Q&A Review for NCLEX-RN): Linda Anne Silvestri PhD RN: 9781437720228: Amazon.com: Books The strategies book did not help me AT ALL. The comprehensive review book is OK. I only used it to review lab values and meds literally the morning of my test. It has much more in it than that but it was overwhelming.
  11. BCC .......... you may have to find the information at a career center, but BCC has one, there are others available in the area as well, the career center has a bunch of free ones available
  12. The accelerated programs mentioned are post-baccalaureate programs, so you need a Bachelor's degree in order to apply and potentially get into those programs.
  13. You need to take BLS for Healthcare Providers through AHA or CPR for Professional Rescuers through American Red Cross
  14. there are no clinicals first semester, they start spring semester because we need to complete the health assessment course before we can start clinicals .... we need to show proof of being CPR certified, have a background check, a CORI check, complete the health clearance form with history and immunizations, hmm and I think that's it ... I think the deadline is August 30th .... we got a big envelope with all of this information, including information about uniforms ... once you get it you will know everything you need to do, I'd try to get that ASAP!
  15. Summer orientation was held on June 23rd for Dix Scholars where we registered for classes and received the information/paperwork for uniforms/steth/clinical placements/health clearance/etc. There is a Fall Orientation for all students Sunday August 29-Wednesday Sept 1 but I'm not sure that there will be the opportunity to do all of this at that time. I'd contact your advisor or anyone that would be able to get you registered and send you the paperwork you need.
