  1. Hi! I am a new grad RN interested in psych nursing. I live in California. Are there any psych classes or certifications I could take to help prepare me or beef up my resume? Please help! Thanks!
  2. Can anyone give me some leads on where to apply for a job as a new grad nurse in California that isn't so competitive? I am open to relocating anywhere, as well as working in any setting including prison healthcare or rural. Someone told me that Susanville is a good place to look? Anyone know anything about that?
  3. I was hoping it would be answered by someone who has had a similar experience. If anyone has been in my same situation and has been able to have charges sealed from your nursing license, please advise me of how you did it. Thanks! Or tell me what kind of attorney would deal with this situation?
  4. I have criminal charges (DUI) that are over 4 years old on my record. My criminal record is completely expunged so my background checks come back clean, but you can still see the charges on my nursing license when you pull it up on the BRN/ Dept of Consumer Affairs website. I was just offered a nursing job, but when they saw the charges on my license they changed their mind. Is there anyway to have your nursing license sealed, similar to your criminal record?? Can you get an attorney for this?
  5. These are some really great descriptions of being an ICU nurse...and you have all mentioned how busy taking care of two patients can be...I am a new grad and interested in the ICU....can any of you please tell me what you do when taking care of your two patients is more than you can handle? Can you tell me how to prioritize and delegate? What can you delegate to the Charge Nurse? The Respiratory Therapist? Is there usually a tech or aide? DO you delegate to other RNs on the floor even thought they have patients of their own?
  6. Hi! I have an interview next Tuesday for a new grad position on a Med-Surg floor, and I was wondering what are the most common illnesses I should review in order to prepare for potential nursing scenario type questions? I am assuming DM, pressure ulcers, pneumonia, bronchitis, appendicitis....anything else in particular that stands out?
  7. Hi, I am a new grad and I am considering trying to get into ER nursing. I have not prepped to get into this specific area of nursing yet and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good basic ER nursing textbook or review book? Do you guys like SHeehys? Or the ER Nursing Made Incredibly Easy perhaps? Please let me know what books those of you more seasoned ER nurses or teachers may recommend :)
  8. Because they hire and I need experience. I am comfortable with the challenge. The pay and benefits are also good so I am sure I could see myself doing it for a long time.
  9. COuld someone please review my answer post and give me some constructive feedback? I would appreciate the help.
  10. I just looked at the website for Trinity Mother Francis and it says the new grad program is extremely competitive. I also graduated a couple years ago and am just now looking for a job (long story) so it will be even more difficult for me....I need to know who is hurting the MOST for nurses so I can go there! WHere is THAT at???
  11. Hi everyone- I have applied for several nursing jobs and don't often get call backs. I am a new grad, and I am wondering if it has anything to do with my cover letter and resume. Maybe I could make it better. Can anyone tell me of a good professional resume service that specializes in health care or nursing, or would anyone who does hiring or knows how to write a good nursing resume be willing to look at mine?
  12. I also said that I don't get intimidated easily and mentioned that although I have not actually worked as a nurse yet, I felt very comfortable during my psych rotation, and in my community health rotations where I made some home visits in very impoverished areas of Long Beach.
  13. I had an interview today and one of the questions was, "What professional experiences have you had that would help you to work in the correctional setting and deal with inmates? I had trouble with this one. What kind of answer are they looking for? I am a new grad and I have not worked as a nurse yet. I have worked in restaurants. I have volunteered at Orphanages and homeless shelters. I mentioned something about being able to work with a diverse population, but i didn't know what else to say... Can anyone help with a good way to answer this question?
  14. This would be my answer: 1.) I would treat the threat as if I thought he was serious, you should never assume a patient is using attention seeking behavior. 2.) I would tell the patient there was no need to hurt himself. And ask him questions about how he was feeling and why he was feeling that way. **I don't know what to do based on what the patient says and what the resources are....what if he misses his family or hates his life? Do I try to contact the family and ask them to visit or write a letter? Do I encourage him to reach out to family members? Do I give him a copy of the bible? 3.) I would keep him for observation, being sure that there were not items around that he could use to hurt himself. 4.) I would notify the doctor of the situation. 5.) Are there psych units or psych consults in prison? I'm not sure what the resources are... 6.) What else? I would appreciate the help...
  15. 1.) I would first have the patient sit down since he had vertigo. 2.) I would assess the patient by palpating his skull, check his pupils, and get a set of vitals. Also check for weakness in the extremities (have him squeeze my hands and press down on my hands with his feet). While I was doing this I would make sure he was oriented (What is your name? Where do you live? What is the date? Can you tell me what happened?) I would listen for slurred speech. 3.) I would start an IV to replace lost fluids. (Are there always standing orders for this? Can I always do this independently? Would I give the patient NS? What rate? Maybe 50cc/hr? Or do I wait for the doctors orders?) 3.) If possible, I would ask someone to call the doctor so I could stay with the patient, or I would call him myself and advise him of the situation. 4.) We would probably order a CT scan. 6.) I would continue to ask the patient the following questions about his symptoms: When and where did you hit your head? Were you ever unconscious? Have you had any more seizures since the fall, or just the one? How long and how often have you been vomiting? Tell me more about the headache? When did it start? Has the pain gotten worse? What does the pain feel like? Do you have pain anywhere else? Do you have any tingling or numbness? Do you have any other symptoms such as: ringing in the ears, blurred vision, or a funny taste in your mouth? 7.) Would I get an EKG? An EEG? Thanks to anyone who wants to help me with this :)
