ABSN Duke Fall 2010
Hey. I'm here. I just started a new position at work which has been keeping me busy. Unfortunately, I didn't get accepted. I think I am the only one in this forum that didn't get accepted or waitlisted. I called to find out why and based on the notes that she had, apparently I didn't dazzle them with "Why Nursing" and "a fit for their program". I am still a little confused about that one. I am bummed but at the same time, I started a new position a few weeks ago so based on that, I wouldn't have been able to start in August anyways. She is going to transfer all of my stuff for the January admission. I'll have to interview again but we'll see how that goes. I have a Bachelors in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Masters in Computer Networking, both with high GPAs, all of my prereqs were A's, my personal statement was good, and I I did well in the interviews. From my perspective, what are they looking for?!?!?! Therefore, Congratulations to everybody that has gotten accepted and waitlisted. Those that are waitlisted, I think y'all are a "shoe-in" anyways so don't sweat it. I think it was the fact that I went to NC State and a big Wolfpack fan - they didn't want me wearing my red and white on their blue and white campus everyday!!!! Everybody better do good so when y'all graduate and I have to be treated at the hospital, y'all better know what y'all are doing! I think everybody will do great!!! Again, congrats to everybody and good luck in August.

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
I asked our favorite person and she said that the committee is meeting on Feb 12th so we probably won't here anything until the week after. ugh!!! I know this is not what everyone was wanting to hear but atleast you know not to be panicking next week when you haven't received anything yet.

Did they secretly take pictures of us on the 29th? That would totally suck since i hate pictures anyways, esp. ones i don't know about - haha!!!

I didn't either. Did they forget? Hopefully we made a good enough impression that they can remember us without our pics.

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
I would probably say before the long weekend. Feb 5 is the last day of interviews so i would think they would get together the following Monday and Tuesday. If that's the case, I would think we should know something Wednesday or Thursday, def. by Friday. That's my take on it!

Part of it could be the fact that the companies (and I am assuming schools are included) are charged 3% of the amount charged for Visa and Master Card charges, American Express is more (I think it's like 4.5%) and I am not sure about Discover. This may have changed, I'm not sure. They may have even changed to a flat fee per transaction. However, Visa and MasterCard prohibits merchants from adding a surcharge to credit card purchases. Discover and American Express do not. I think merchants used to add a surcharge to credit card purchases and Visa and MasterCard put a stop to it. If this is the case, this may have been when the private schools stopped allowing credit cards to pay their tuition because they would eat the cost and at the prices of private school tuition, it would add it really quick, really fast for all the students. Since Visa and MasterCard are the two most common credit cards, it would be very, very strange for them to only allow Discover and AMEX. Of course, this is all speculation and my info could be outdated. I haven't verified this, this is what I knew in the past. Time to stop babbling!

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
Hey. Just got back to the house. Others were finishing up their interviews esp. if they were in "Group D". They canceled the campus tour - I think it had alot to do with the cold weather. We did get to the see the CND which was pretty cool. Hope everybody did great today - I think so! It was good to meet some of you. Hope to meet the rest in August. Good luck to all of those that haven't interviewed yet. You will do fabulous!!! Anybody getting bad weather this weekend (or that's already gotten it), be safe and stay warm!

Depending on the weather, some people may not be able to go out unless they are staying at the Millineum and can walk. They are calling for 11 inches in Raleigh: http://www.wral.com/weather/story/6902225/ I'll believe it when i see it! :-)

I'm wearing a suit only because i really don't have anything else dressy enough and would probably never weat is again so why waste the money on a one-time outfit. I wear jeans and a t-shirt everyday for work (if not shorts or sweats) so I don't have much dressy stuff other than my suit. When i go visit customers for my work, i usually wear khakis and a polo and that is not dressy enough for an interview. What you are planning on wearing should be perfectly fine. If i had it, i would probably wear that instead of a suit. Since it's been a while since i have worn it, I may need to try it on to make sure it still fits me - if not, i will be buying something different anyways tomorrow! :-)

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
The ones that looked at our files to determine if we were invited for interviews were done by the admissions staff, not the faculty members doing the interviews. All the admissions staff looked at initially was to make sure we meet the minimum requirements. Those that automatically met those minimum reqs, were invited to the interviews. Those that were borderline, they looked at the overall file (including volunteering, what your previous degrees were in, what have you been doing since you got out of school, etc). Hope this helps!

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
I just spoke with our favorite person and she said they are getting ready to send out the confirmations and a "packet" via email. It basically will tell a little more information regarding Duke Days, what to expect, what to wear, where to go (maps, direction), etc. The actual schedule and who we will be interviewing with will not be given to us ahead of time - it will be given when we arrive. They are currently sending out the ones for the 22nd. Next week, probably end of the week, they will send out the information for the 29th (basically a week prior). The same with the 5th. Hope this helps!

I got the email but I originally looked at it on my phone so I ignored the attachment until i saw your post. That is funny. I know it's a mistake but I am glad that it happened. 70 slots out of 132 interviewees. Not bad odds!

If you look at each MSN program, you can see which courses are required for each and if it's one that you have already taken, then it would count. So for CRNA, N308 (Applied Statistics), N307 (Research Methods) and N312 (Research Utilization - if you took the Research track) would apply. So there are some graduate courses that we would have taken (Pathophysiology and Health Promotion & Disease Prevention) that would not count for CRNA. Whereas for Family Nurse Practioner, all 5 courses would be accepted. I believe N307, N308 and N312 are required for all MSN specialities but I am not positive - those that I checked at a quick glance, had those 3 courses. Some others are required too from what i saw such as N301 and N303 but we don't take those for ABSN. Hope this helps!

Oh no, you didn't offend me one bit. :) Sorry if it came across as me being offended. That's part of the problem with forums/emails/etc - it's difficult to tell at times.

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
I have applied to UNC BSN (24 months) and Duke ABSN (16 months). Probably the 3 main things i will be considering if I get accepted to both are: 1. cost 2. length of program 3. courses offered In my case, with UNC starting in May and going for 24 months and Duke starting in August and going for 16 months, with Duke, I would have more time at work to help save up and I would be working sooner (3 months) with Duke over UNC. Granted, UNC is half the cost. Also, Duke has a tuition reimbursement program. They pay you 49500 divided by 3 years for every year you work. It is based on 365 days. If you work 1 1/2 years there, you only get 16500 instead of 24750 but anything is better than nothing. I am not sure what UNC still has to offer or other schools. With Duke, they offer a research track or a Spanish track. The Spanish track does not require you to be fluent in Spanish. Also, if you plan on going for Masters at some point, depending on the track for Masters, some if not all of those credits/courses will be able to be used for the Masters (and I am sure they could be used at other Graduate schools too). Doing this will save some money when you go to do your Masters. These are some of the things that I will be considering but in case others haven't heard or thought of some of these things, hopefully this will help.

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
I don't disagree with you but in my case, with me being single and a mortgage, I will be way over the $22K for 16 months. Then I have utilities, food, gas, etc on top of that. Initially I was figuring 2 years when typing that up and just forgot to go back and make the adjustment when I said 16 months. Sorry about that! For those coming to the area and getting an apartment or that has another income to make up most of the rent/mortgage, then I'm sure those could be well under $22K for the 16 months. For the most part, I still live like a college student and I have been out for 5 years. I don't go out and spend all my money. Now, granted, I don't live on ramen noodles like I used to but I don't spend it all either. I have been saving so if I can get financial aid/scholarships, then I shouldn't have any problem - I am sure that is the case for most other people too. I just wish the Duke prices were more like the UNC (or other public in-state universities) prices.

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
Our favorite person mentioned that most people could figure between $55-60K for the program (including tuition increase by the time fall comes around) plus whatever your living expenses are. Personally, I don't see how someone can have living expenses only to be $22K for 16 months. I figured for most people (if single), that would just be rent/mortgage, not including food, gas, utilities, etc. Maybe that is just me. :wink2: They should be able to give us a better idea at Duke Days. I know they will also discuss financial aid, loans, etc.

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
I'm not sure about Durham but the state's main one is in Raleigh off I-40. West Cary has one on Saturdays from 8-12. I'm not sure about others though.
-
ABSN Duke Fall 2010
It all depends on the part of Durham but that's just like any city. I'm also in Cary so the drive isn't that bad. Chapel Hill is a college town. It pretty much only exists because of the university. I went to NC State, which has a nice campus downtown Raleigh but Chapel Hill has a nice campus too. From what I have seen Duke has a nice one as well. There are places close to campus that you shouldn't have to worry about and then others close by if you didn't want to live in Durham. The drive from Cary does not require me to go through any place I don't feel comfortable with. I can always assist or answer questions as best as possible about the area if you like as I am sure others on the forum can too. I look forward to meeting those on the 29th.

Merry Christmas everybody!

Good catch. The only thing from that page that I had looked at was the Calendar. I had also looked on Duke's website for course descriptions. That might be a little useful as well to some.

UNC Chapel Hill deadline changed for May 2010
They are saying mid-April: "Please do not contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions about admissions decisions unless you have not received a notification letter by mid‐April for the January application deadline." Since it had to be submitted in December (I'm not sure what the old submission date was), it would be nice if we would know in March. Looks like this thread may become dormant for a little bit.
-
ABSN Duke Fall 2010
congrats!!!! you did all that work reapplying for may unc. did you submit it yet? hope not so you didn't waste the $80 on the application fee. if so, maybe they will refund it to you. since we feel like you are part of the "hope-to-soon-be-duke-son-students" family, you can still join us for beer and bbq. you shouldn't be in classes at that time of day (gosh, i hope not!!!) good luck on classes - i'm jealous since you are starting in a few weeks but good luck and keep us all posted on how things go for you at unc. if we all get in, maybe we can all meet up for the unc/duke football and basketball games.

ABSN Duke Fall 2010
I am confirmed for the 29th! "She" said there will be two different committees for the interviews. She had also mentioned that 197 applied and that they typically interview around 125-140 (with 70 slots to fill and then around 20-30 waitlist). Since all of us have made it to the interview round, are chances are even better: over 50% chance of getting accepted. If "she #2" said that they are thinking of opening up another date, they may have more "in-person" interviews than they have had in the past. I think our chances overall are excellent compared to other schools. I'll take those odds (now i just hope i am one of those 70 that get a slot). :-)
