Does your ICU have CNA's?
I work in a 12 bed CCU and we usually have a CNA scheduled, but rarely get to use them. They are usually pulled to sit with 1:1's somewhere else in the hospital. Our CNA's take temps, empty foleys, answer call lights, turns, and do baths. It is very challenging to manage without an assistant and we have all been told the same thing... Most ICUs and CCUs don't have nursing assistants.

Frontier- how far out did you apply?
Good Luck sdj232RN!! I am looking at class 136 which is FB in March. I am taking the pre-reqs now, so can't complete my app until I have those grades. I have also heard about them closing the class for too many applicants, which is partly why I wanted to know how far out people were applying. Also, I really don't want to wait another 6 months to apply if I happen to get wait listed and don't get in. . Thanks for your help and I wish you the best of luck!!!

Frontier- how far out did you apply?
I am working on my application for Frontier and wondered if applying to a later term would increase my chances of getting in and NOT getting wait-listed. What term did you apply for and when did you send in your completed application? Any thoughts or personal experiences are appreciated!

sheath removal P&P (femoral)
Several of our hospital's interventional cardio doc's have different criteria for pulling one of their sheaths. ACT times for example, some want also, we always hold manual pressure and generally reserve FemStop's for bleeding complications (like excessive oozing) as we need an order from Dr to apply one. This info isn't necessarily in our 'policy' but just general good practice.

Anyone take the Hurst Review for NCLEX? Is it worth the money?
I just completed the Hurst review last month. I don't graduate until December, but I learned SO much that has already helped me in Med-Surg2 this semester. I agree with the other posters-Marlene's voice sticks with you. Our instructor was also fabulous. I highly recommend the Hurst review- I know it was mentioned they guarantee you pass on the 1st try, but for the money- you also have 2 years access to their website and materials and you can keep going to the reviews without paying anything additional. (i think for 2 yrs also). I am going to one in May and one in August too.

Things you would love to say to your fellow nursing students!
Ok, apparently we are all in the same class, but I have a few more... 1. Please don't ask me what video, lecture, homework, etc we are supposed to have done for today. You have a schedule just like I do, read it! 2. Yes, they really do expect you to read the 90 pages they assigned for class today. NO, I don't think that it's outrageous, it is a 3 hour lecture and only meets once a week. Was it really that hard to read the 90 pages in the last 7 days? 3. You failed the bed bath check off?:confused: Dare I ask, how? 4. They let you back in the program- even after you failed the bed bath and vital signs and came to class at the first break and only to act like you have been here the whole time? 5. If you knew you weren't going to be able to keep up with the demands of the program before it even started, why couldn't you say that before the 3rd wk of class? Now you have taken someone else's spot who has to wait another semester to reapply and try to get in. That was somewhat therapeutic!

Is there anything I can work on before starting NS?
As a first semester student, I'd say Pharmacology and anything Nursing Fundamentals especially- the Nursing Process. Everything comes down to the nursing process, if you don't know it/understand it, you will never pass the exams! I bought 2 fundamentals review books to study along with my textbooks because it's just that important.

Got a flu shot - now my entire arm hurts
I couldn't believe how bad my arm hurt after the H1N1 shot. Like some of the other posters, had pain all the way down my arm to my fingertips, couldn't sleep on that arm, had trouble dressing b/c it hurt so bad to lift my arm. I have never had a problem with a flu shot hurting so much. I heard the H1N1 was more potent than the seasonal flu shot this year- anyone know if there is any truth to this. Is this maybe why it is causing so much arm pain?

Anyone Else a Fan of Dr. OZ?
I like him too. Ironically, I'm watching him right now - he's talking about the face transplant... very interesting! I, like previous posters, also like that he offers home remedies- I have been using vinegar and water since I have been on my own. It is a great cleaner and couldn't be cheaper! I also like that he doesn't sugarcoat anything- when he puts them in the truth tube- or whatever it's called, it is nothing but the truth! ( like with the cowboy from AZ) Am I the only one that does not find him attractive though?

Attended an autopsy today
rbytsdy- I didn't realize the hospital left everything as is either. Our cases were DOA's at the scene so they never went to the hospital for resuscitation. The there were 2 cases we were able to view and the first was really interesting because he had a pacemaker and it looked to be a very tedious procedure to take it out. The ME said he needed to be especially cautious b/c he wanted to send it for testing to make sure it was not faulty. The other case was was more smelly, (probably from the marijuana and all the munchies in his stomach) but he also had a heart that weighed 940g! That was by far the most incredible thing that day! I think I would like to stick to the living and seeing 'real life' anatomy instead. Thanks everyone for your comments, it's good to know I'm not the only weird one who thought this experience was really cool!

Attended an autopsy today
Just wondering how many students here get the oppportunity to witness an autopsy? How did you feel about it? What was the worst part for you? What was the most exciting? Or, it you have not attended an autopsy, would you want to and why? I had the opportunity today for my A&P class thanks to a great relationship between my professor and the state's forensic lab. I found it very exciting and interesting, but still had some trouble with the smells, despite the Vicks! (it does wear off eventually, and a little too soon I might add) I have heard this is a very unusual experience to have- especially since I do not start the nursing program until Jan '10. Just curious...
