  1. I am taking the summer off myself.... working full time, going to school full time and having a family is hard enough. You owe it to yourself to take a break every now and then. Do it while you can. If you keep going without a break, and you get accepted right away, you'll wish you had some "me" time before you commit yourself for those two grueling years. :)
  2. I haven't tried with ARC yet, but I was surprised I got into the chem class... there were only 24 seats! You can go to the Sutter website... it's SCC Associate Degree Nursing Program Extended Campus Hope this helps!!!
  3. Thank you for your input. I work at a surgery center. I am not involved in patient care. I am an administrative assistant to the DON and facility Administrator. My job is to keep her organized and take care of small daily tasks, in which I usually finish in the first hour or two. My job is the first in our entire company, because there is no Admin at any other of our ASC's across the country. Mine was just created last year, so they are still trying to streamline my job description... they are making it up as they go. On days like today... we have a small patient load, therefore there is less paperwork. And when she's away and happy, my job requirements are small. I usually spend the time studying or speaking to other nurses for feedback on specific jobs or situations... (which is why I am here on this board, obviously). I am quite a lucky person actually to work here. And yes, they do not mind my "web surfing" while on my own time. I don't really consider this "web surfing" as I am trying to connect with others for education reasons that are job related... Anyhow, I appreciate the comments and I hope in the future, people are less quick to judge others and would ask questions first to gain an understanding of the other persons motivations. At least, IMO, that would be the most respectable thing to do. Have a good day.
  4. Before you judge... know that I was on my UNPAID BREAK while posting this... and NO, I don't need direction. I am actually sort-of in charge while she is gone. The reason why I have nothing to do, is because I am efficient at my job, and I have already completed what I needed to do today, including facilitating a meeting on her behalf. Right now, I am on my UNPAID LUNCH... so I have free time to explore. I am allowed occasional emails throughout the day. But then again, why should I explain to you what I do for a living. You jump right to conclusions that I am lazy and unproductive. Shame on you for your predjuice. No wonder some people leave this board.... they are attacked un-necessarily.
  5. So I am still plowing on towards finishing my pre-reqs. I just finished my EMT certification on the side... and my human development class. I am taking the summer off, but I am already registered for class for the fall... Chem A and Nutrition. Anyone else taking similiar classes? Also, I am having a slow day at work - if you want a chat buddy, let me know. (I am the assistant to the director of nursing where I work) She's not here today, so it's going to be kinda boring.
  6. Well, I was able to register the EMT class to get my re-cert... That way I can work my way through nursing school. I wasn't able to get into Chem, but I was able to register for Human Development... which is one of the other pre-reqs I do need. Anyone else taking that kind of class?
  7. Yeah I thought of that already. I have over 80 credits (I have an associate degree already)... and althought they accept my credits, it doesn't help me. In order to advance my slot to register, I have to take THEIR classes... it stinks... SO I am sitting here just twiddling my thumbs.
  8. All I can say, is just keep trying...
  9. My boss is the director of nursing at a surgical facility...It has nothing to do with any of that. Besides... I just found out from the department heads of the classes that I just need to arrive on the first day, and they will allow me to add the class. They don't have wait lists, so that's just the way it's done. There are NO other available classes that I can take. And if there were, they are all day time. I am the only income right now in a family of 3 so there is no way I am able to change my schedule at this time. Nursing school will be different, because I will be living on student loans and working nights as an EMT. My BF was able to register for the classes first because he has credits and was able to get in... so I am just going to go to class with him. He's also pursuing an EMT certification (although mine is just a re-cert... I have experience as an EMT already), and the Chem class, we both need. I need it for nursing and he needs it for Paramedic school. Thanks anyways. I guess our colleges here are a little bit less strict.
  10. I am so upset... the classes I want to register for are already full!!!! I know I could show up to class on the day of the class and request to be added, but I have never had to do this before... Has a professor ever turned anyone away if they request to add after the class has been filled? I already have all my Gen Ed classes done, and everything else I need except nursing pre-reqs... and I have to take them in a certain order (due to being pre-reqs themselves for other classes)... ugh. I am kinda down because class doesn't start until January... so I have to wait for two more months before I can even find out if I can get into the classes... I am bummed out!!! Anyone else had this happen to them?? What was your situation?
  11. Midlifemom - You sound like me... haha
  12. How ironic... I graduated from Valencia with my AA in general studies back in 2004. :)
  13. I am applying for entrance starting Fall 2011. I should have all my pre-reqs done by May 2011... :) After that, it will just be applications to all the schools (for either JC or BSN programs) until I get accepted somewhere. It's a lottery system here, so hopefully I will get something somewhere. This is my schedule for the next 5 semesters: Spring 2010 ChemA EMT-B class Summer 2010 Human Dev Nutrition Fall 2010 Anatomy Chem2A Spring 2011 Physiology Microbiology Summer 2011 Sociology Anyone mimicing this type of schedule? I live in Northern California.... :)
  14. I am not 50ish, I am almost 35. I have a son who will be 15 this weekend and well, I am feeling "older" than most of my friends my age who are just starting to have families. I have been married twice, and I have recently reunited with my highschool sweetheart from 20 years ago. I have been attempting nursing school, and the idea of it for some time now. Some of the classes I took have already "expired" and I have to retake them, but I have had a revelation a few weeks ago... and I am pursuing it harder than ever and nothing will hold me back. My family is very supportive, and in fact, my BF is actually considering nursing school himself. He enjoys the sciences and he's good at caring for people. The more I talk about it and he reads what I read, the more he's thinking it will be a good fit for him too as a career. My son wants to be a doctor and has already approached me about going into the military after highschool to pursue his education and training. I have gone through Microbiology, Psych, Nutrition, Stats, and even Biomedical Ethics. I am a former EMT, and I am getting re-certified so that I can work nights as I go through nursing school. I know none of this is easy. And no matter what age you are, if you put your mind to it, you can do anything. I am a friend to all here. :) Good luck in your studies. Tami
  15. hi there!!! awesome news!! well, i just moved here to ca from virginia 3 months ago, so i didn’t get here in time to take anything for the fall. but i am taking classes starting in the spring. i am taking chem a and hsci 2 (emt-basic) in the spring. i used to be an emt years ago in florida and i decided to get re-certified. (in case my current job doesn’t want me to work part time, i can work nights as an emt while i go to nursing school) summer, i am taking human dev, and nutrition. fall 2010 i am taking anatomy and chem 2a, and spring 2011 i will be taking physiology and microbiology.. summer of 2011 i will be taking sociology and possibly “dosage calculations or pharmacology” at sac state to satisfy those classes. i hope i can still apply even though i will be finishing up the classes in the spring of ’11. i have to re-take microbiology and nutrition because it’s been over 7 years since i last took them l so it’s like i am starting over. luckily, i already have an aa degree, so i don’t need any general ed classes. if you want to add me as a friend on here, please do. if you want my email let me know. j
  16. I am considering taking the test myself soon. Haven't decided when yet. I plan to start applying for the fall of 2011. How early is too early to take the test? I already have an AA in general studies, but its been a while for me since I have taken any math or science classes. You all know that if you dont use it or practice it regularly, it all disappears. Anyways, advice would be great. Thanks!
  17. LOL... wow. They don't tell you why or what it is? That stinks.
  18. Just curious if anyone else here is enrolling in Chemistry or Foundations of Chemistry (or something similar?) Thanks!
  19. Hi Kristine, Thanks for the message!!! I was going to reply back, but I realized I cant until I get my posts up more (since it's still less than 10) Can you send me your email? I would like to chat with you more. I am at work right now, but I check my email during the day. Thanks!! Tami
  20. Hi there, Nice to meet you. I have done some of the pre-reqs before. I have had micro and nutrition, but it's been 7 years so I have to retake them. I will be done with all my pre-reqs by spring 2011. I will be applying to start nursing school in fall 2011. My boyfriend is going to be taking some of the classes with me as well. He's going for an EMT certificate as well as a Natural Science degree. I am getting re-certified as an EMT so I can work some while going through nursing school. It will be nice to have a new friend in the area who is also going through this. BTW, what is your name? My son will be 15 in 2 weeks, and my stepdaughter will be 7 (on the same day). Hope to talk to you soon. (the smiley is from my stepdaughter for you) Tami
  21. Good morning, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tami. I live in northern Cali and I am a long-time pre-nursing student. Long-time, because I have taken some pre-reqs so long ago, that I have to retake them. (ugh!) Only because some situations wouldn't let me continue pursuing or applying to nursing school when I was ready. ANYWAYS, I am back on the wagon and I am going for it. I have a plan (and I hope it works!!!) SO this coming semester, I am taking Chemistry so anyone who is up to making a new friend, let me know. I work at an ambulatory surgery center, in the pre-op area. I am an administrative assistant at this time (my boss is the facility administrator and director of nursing). My co-workers are all nurses, MA's, surg techs, rad techs, and doctors. Have a great day!!!
  22. Hi there, I am a new resident of Northern California... and I am also finishing my pre-reqs for nursing. Was wondering if anyone else was going to Sierra to get their pre-reqs and attempt nursing through them. I have an AA already, so I was going to just apply to all the schools to see who will take me first, when I am ready. I am 34, I have a teenaged son, in a relationship... and I am working full time at a surgery center. I am looking for a "study buddy" and nursing school partner. (A new friend too) Take care, Tami :)
