  1. Hi! As a current NYU Second Degree student finishing up her pre-reqs and then entering the 15 month accelerated in the fall I want to contribute to this post! Thus far I am really enjoying NYU. I know that they have made a great deal of changes to the Nursing Program that will come into affect in Fall 2010. This adjustments sound great and are posted on the College of Nursing's website. As far as the pre-reqs go - I am taking A&P, Nutrition, Dev. Psych and an elective Medical Anthropology. I am truly enjoying everyone of these classes and love all my professors. I know that the A&P class's structure is a bit different from other schools - at NYU our labs are not dissecting animals or going to see cadavers, but with bodies similar to the "Bodies Exhibit." We have a quiz every week in class and have online tests and homework. This means that you have to keep up but keeping up and how much you use the book for your online tests is up to you (it reminds me of a liberal arts approach - your studying and how much you want to do is up to you). And personally, I love the professor, she is always available after class for questions and is very personable. The nutrition professor is quite well respected here in NYC and is constantly on the news networks and in the NY Times. The dev. psych professor and the medical anthropology professor are both well established in their professions (one is a director of the Red Cross Disaster Relief and the other is a famous anthropologist with several books in print). As a second degree student I love having access to such professors. I can not comment on the nursing clinicals yet nor the specific nursing courses (e.g. nursing fundamentals, patho etc..). Also most importantly, we have a great group of people finishing the pre-reqs that are second degree students as well as having great support from the administration and professors! Just thought I would pass on my experience thus far. - albeit very early in the program. Good luck to all of you applying to schools! And speedingticket get some sleep if you can! And good luck on your midterms! Cheers!
  2. Hey IheartNYC - Definitely go by the link that Jpena8 posted regarding the address for application materials and it should answer lots of other questions as well! I had my school(s) send the transcripts to NYU. Normally you fill out a transcript request form that your old college/university has (most likely from the registrar's office). And then once you give it back to them with all the info the wonderful people there will send it to NYU in the sealed envelope with the school's official stamp etc... My references gave me the letters of recommendation and I sent them in priority mail with tracking number. However, it is important that each letter is on official school/work letterhead and in a sealed envelope (hopefully with letterhead as well). Once you have your PM rights feel free to send me a message with any other questions! Good luck!
  3. I understand - but, I am sure it will be fine! I know it sounds much easier than it is - but don't stress once the applications have gone in! I totally freaked out and applied to practically every school in the immediate NYC area. And it was really hard to wait for all those weeks for all those letters! If you did apply to CMSV they are rolling - (at least they were for Spring) and they send the letters out pretty quick. Good luck! I am sure you will get in!
  4. So sorry Donster! Will not do again. P.S. I agree that men in nursing definitely rock!
  5. Hi! I would love to know the answer to JPena's original question! I am also finishing pre-reqs at NYU this semester then starting the ABSN program Fall 2010. I too am very excited, nervous and curious about the whole experience- particularly at NYU! Thanks!
  6. Oh sorry! I called and asked about this before I applied. I double checked again the other day as I finished registering for classes. If you have any questions about anything re: NYU- you should email or call NYU - she is very helpful and understanding of the whole process. Do you have her information?
  7. Hey! As long as we are in good academic standing we can follow into the 15 month/normal progression without reapplying. The assumption is that all Second Degree Students will enter into the ABSN program. I believe Hunter makes everybody reapply after the pre-reqs are completed. Not sure though.
  8. Hey Genu9ine and iheartnyc - Just to let you know - there are a few of us at NYU who are Second-Degree BSN's that have been accepted to the Nursing College and need to finish pre-reqs this semester. After that we can join the Accelerated Program in the Fall (2010) or finish the program at a "normal" pace. I also sent my application in super early as well - I believe I sent it in Sept. 1st for an Oct. 15th deadline - then I received my acceptance letter about Nov. 5th. It is definitely a mixed blessing sending the the app in early - it is a long wait to hear back from the admissions department! Also - I did all the short answers and the "D" essay question. NYU definitely wants to see everybody's writing style and learn abit more about the applicants as individuals. Also - just to let you know - I sent in my resume as well. If you have any other questions - feel free to send me a message! Good Luck and I hope to see you in the Fall at NYU! Alison
  9. Hey! I completely understand! I was very anxious about the whole financial aid organization process! But, calling the financial aid office really helped me. I would suggest calling them and asking the status of your package. Also, I would focus on the Bursar's Office for the total cost - which states that the College of Nursing's tuition is $18,293 per semester (http://www.nyu.edu/bursar/tuition.fees/rates09/ugnurse.html). The total cost depends on how the program is done. So for me, I have one full semester of pre-reqs (nutrition, psych, and anat/physio) so I will be in school five semesters in total. If I do them all Fall/Spring that is about $91,500 ( I don't like looking at the total)!!! I believe Summer/Winter courses are billed a bit differently. The $38,000 came from a NYU Undergraduate Financial Fact sheet that the school sent me with my financial aid package. It breaks down estimates on other costs as well (books, etc..) - I'm sure you will get the same thing. But it is meant to be a "general guide" for all NYU schools- not specific to the Nursing College. I registered for courses last week - including nutrition! They should be sending you the information about a week after they receive your deposit --(I would think). Maybe we will have nutrition together! Talk to you soon! Alison
  10. Hey JPena8! I was just trying to respond to your PM but I can't!!! I need a few more posts, I guess! Congrats on NYU!!! I hope you don't mind me addressing some of the things in the message here. I had already accepted CMSV and paid the deposit when I got my NYU letter. CMSV asked me to hold a spot by Nov. 1 and NYU does not send out letters until after Nov. 1, so I was in a pickle and decided to hold a place at CMSV just to make sure I was definitely going to nursing school! When I got my acceptance from NYU, I sent a formal letter to several people in the admissions office and nursing department withdrawing my place and thanking them for all their help. I don't believe this is a problem (to decline enrollment after the deposit has been sent) - that is why it is non-refundable! They know this will happen. And thus far I have not heard anything from CMSV that would lead me to believe it is a problem. I received my NYU financial aid package about a week after my acceptance letter. However, I spoke to them about twice that week on the phone and the financial aid office was fantastic. I found them very helpful - and they can look up a great deal of your financial information over the phone. All in all it took less than 3 weeks to get my package and loans all set up (including a Stafford and a private loan with Chase). The $38,000 tuition estimate is off of a NYU Financial Facts sheet they sent me - and they say this is a "typical budget." However, on the Bursar's website they say the per-term nursing tuition to be this: "Full time students, tuition, 12 to 18 points flat rate, per term $18,293.00." (http://www.nyu.edu/bursar/tuition.fees/rates09/ugnurse.html) I've registered for courses for Spring term and am super excited to start!!! The packet of information you for course registration and orientation is very helpful. Cheers and sorry I can't PM you back!!! Good luck with all the decisions and congrats again!!! Let me know if you want my email or anything! Alison
  11. Hey Eric- I am starting at NYU in January and have 3 pre-reqs to finish (anatomy/physio, nutrition and psychology). I chose NYU and the unbelievable price tag for several reasons: 1. Clinical placements - they have an amazing variety and there is no wait list 2. Reputation in NYC, nationally and globally - they are recognized as a top school 3. Which brings job opportunities! 4. And lastly graduate school possibilities - NYU's own MS program and also it is a great school on graduate applications at other universities I volunteer at Planned Parenthood here in NYC and work with several nurses who are NYU trained and one who is in the master's program. They all speak highly of the school and professors (also they assure me it is a tough program and that I should expect to work hard). CMSV is approx. $24,000 for tuition and NYU is approx. $38,000 for tuition. My belief is that NYU's resources (endowment, research facilities, career counseling, medical facilities, clinical opportunities in the city etc..) will be worth the extra cost - in the long run. Also, since I sent in my deposit - I have had a great experience with the financial aid office, the admissions office, the registrar and the administrative team in the nursing department. Let me know what you decide. Perhaps we will have some courses together! Alison
  12. Hi! Just wanted to let everybody know I spoke with the NYU Financial Aid Office and they were very helpful (much nicer than the Bursar's Office). They said to call them back as soon as I receive my Student Aid Report from the FAFSA people. Once FAFSA has emailed/shipped that report the NYU Financial Aid Office can pull up the information and discuss what the next steps will be and what aid you will receive. The officer I spoke to tried looking up my information but I am still waiting on the FAFSA report - (I applied a little late- whoops). They also asured me that I have still have time to get my aid and payment plans organized as the first payments are not due until Jan. 8th (I believe) - and the Bursar's Office said the first bill will be sent out the second week in December. Just thought I would let everybody know that I found the call supportive and if you are stressed I would give them a call and hopefully you get Jill. She is great. Cheers!
  13. Congrats everybody!!! I got into NYU Spring Semester 2010 today too! Even though I am doing the regular 2nd degree - can I join this happy discussion as well? Wishing everybody the best and good luck to everyone who has not heard back yet!
  14. Hi! I got into NYU!!!!!! I am going to accept!!! Let me know how things are going for you! Best of luck! Alison
  15. I know! It is more than a bit frustrating that student the enrollment place holder for CMSV overlaps with NYU and the other schools. Oh well, I think am going to reply the week before due just in case. I would hate to lose my place at CMSV then get rejected from NYU. I heard the same thing about NYU's class sizes. I friend of mine (resident MD cardiologist) worked with lots of NYU student nurses and said they all liked it and were great nurses. My other friend's Dad was the head pathologist at St. Vincent Hospital for years and said that the nurses coming out of CMSV were always experienced and good at their jobs. None of it makes the decision making any easier....
