Male RN in maternity
There was myself and another male nursing student in our clinical group and our clinical instructor was horrible. Right off she made us uncomfortable and always paired us together with first time moms who tend to be more shy. Honestly didn't learn anything from that clinical rotation. We ended up trying to lay low hanging out in the nursery holding the babies. We both have kids at home so we have seen a birth before, but this was not at all a good learning experience for either of us. One day she asked us if we wanted to go hang out in the ER, so of course we did... Not sure how I would have handled it better, but oh well..

To become a nurse, or not become a nurse?...
You are going to get a lot of negative Nancys and Donald downers who no matter where they are they are never happy. To be honest, some of those people are probably out of touch with how bad the economy really is and are oblivious to how lucky they are that they have a steady job that pays well with what I consider great flexible hours and endless possibilities. I am married, have kids, use to own a real estate company and in nursing school and will graduate in May. I currently work at a hospital as a tech and I will tell you, I LOVE IT! There is never a dull moment. As long as you give people honesty and respect, they are grateful for what you do. Plus I will admit I was a little embarrassed about becoming a male nurse in the beginning, but now I'm pretty comfortable with it. If anyone makes a crack, I tell them I'm going to be a lactation consultant or a midhusband. But honestly, 99% of people comment on how great that is. I've also been told by instructors and others that work in the field that since I'm a guy I will get hired quickly and probably be able to demand more money. Good Luck!

New name for nurses who are men
I agree midlife.... They all took this way too seriously... I am in school right now and someone in postpartum ask me the other day what kind of nurse I wanted to be and I told them a midhusband / lactation consultant. They laughed their a$$ off. I wasn't serious of course, but I had fun with it and they did too. I think that was the point of this point, just to have fun.

Why do you feel that nursing is for you?
I am going to be honest here. I got in it because I owned a small real estate company, but we all know where real estate is. Prior to real estate, I was a patient advocate at a hospital, so I am all about helping people. But the precipitating reason is because I want job security. I realize that even nursing has an issue with that now, but I know that by the time I get out of school, or at least in 4 or 5 years, there will be plenty of jobs.

being discriminated against in clinicals
You know that old saying, "If you can't beat em,' join em.?' What I would do is find some or at least one that you think you might get along with and try to join their group. Just make it subtle. I truly believe it would be in your best interest because I think it would be difficult to go through the whole program without having someone to lean on. I am in a class with 24, 3 of which are men. We are all married and "normal." Although the one guy is pretty quiet. I am outgoing so I don't have that problem. My problem is that one girl who has gravitated towards me, her fiance' has made comments to her about being jealous.

being discriminated against in clinicals
That is so true. Women will go on about something forever. With guys, they might yell, but once that happens, it is done and over.

Weird lab vibes
I sometimes wonder if and when people feel a weird vibe from other people if it isn't actually a projection that they themselves aren't putting out there. I am in first semester nursing and there 23 girls and 3 guys. I don't notice any kind of discrimination. But then again I am not looking for it. I am a bigger guy and one thing I have noticed is that when there have been a couple of times when the issue of dealing with "bigger" patients has come up the teacher used me as the patient. Don't get me wrong, I really like this teacher, but I have figured that the reason she uses me is because she figured I wasn't as sensitive to the issue as some of the chubby girls might be. (The other 2 guys are skinny.) I rolled with it and didn't allow it to hurt my feelings or alienate myself. Then again just today, we had a test in pharmacology and I got a higher score, and when comparing answers, I had a couple that weren't marked wrong when theirs were. So of course they accused the teacher of favoring me because I have a member. Well, whatever works I guess

MALE NP
I am a first semester male nursing student. I would like to advance on to the practitioner program, however, as I understand it, they are going to make that a doctorate program. Not sure that my information is correct, but it makes me think that maybe the physician assistant route might be better. Not to sound sexist, but it sounds better anyway. Do you have any info or thoughts on the whole deal?

Is it me, or is there a dichotomy for male nurses??
I used to work at a psychiatric hospital and there seemed to be a high number of male nursing staff that worked there. They were all married "normal" guys. I myself am going to nursing school and I consider myself a "normal" married guy. Even the other guys in my class are just normal married guys.

Ages of male nursing students?
I just turned 35 and I'm in my 2nd year of school. There are two other guys in my class and I'm guessing one about my age and the other about 30. Prior to this I worked in the real estate industry and we all know where that went.

Accelerated programs...expensive or cheap?
Wow, I am glad I don't live in some of those areas. I live on the Eastern edge of Kansas and I am going to a CC which will cost about $10,000 for their 2 year program. There are programs in this area that costs upwards of $30,000 for a one year accelerated program.

is nursing right for me?
I am currently in nursing school myself. I worked several years at a mental facility and the nurses mostly never got their hands dirty. It was always up to the aides to do that kind of work.
