  1. I don't think any nursing really is as scientific as you sound like you want your profession to be. It can be what you want it to be, so a BSN degree and RN license are great starting points to lead you into a job as a CRNA, PhD in Nursing or an NP. Good luck!
  2. All I have to say to that is.... HAHAHAHAHAHA ...and THANK YOU!! :yeah:

thanks for all the info. that's great. well i saw on the Tampa General Hospital (in Tampa, FL) website that they have a few positions open for "Clinical Nurse: Trauma Surgery." It's specific to the trauma, because they're a HUGE location (transplant, burn, pediatric, etc.). So that's why I'm curious about what's the best background to have before applying to a position like that. Thanks again!!
  4. see if during clinicals, are any patients on the floor having surgery that you could go to. see if there's a day where you could follow around a surgery team as a clinical experience. also, does the hospital have an internship program for students right out of school/nurses. that's what i did. become a student member of AORN (seriously.. www.aorn.org). it's only $20/year as a student, you get a ton of benefits including journals which give you a good background on what's really going on down there. it also looks amazing during your first interview to say that you've been a member since nursing school. it shows initiative and determination. talk to your clinical instructor and see if you get get down there as much as possible. get names, phone numbers, ect. of OR personnel. call people, e-mail...good luck!

I am currently a general OR nurse in SW Florida. We have a local level 1 traume center. I am interested in becoming a trauma OR nurse. Any suggestions for what background is best to get there? Could anyone supply information about what it's like as a trauma OR nurse? Thank you!!

GREAT question mrsilly. I'm looking for the same information on here as well. It's pretty hard to come by. I'm really wanted to become an RNFA as well but our system doesn't recognize them. I live in Florida and it seems like hardly anyone does. Best of luck to you and your coworker!
  7. great! thanks for the information!
  8. congrats on graduating! I just did as well, and began a periop internship 2 weeks ago. what kind of portfolio did you start to put together? i only had copies of my cover letter and resume, and they didn't even ask for those since they already had them. don't fret too much about the interview. is it going to be your first one or a follow-up? i had a phone interview first which was situational questions about my nursing habits and reactions to situations on the floor (say... with other nurses, MDs or patients). My follow-up interview was face-to-face. They asked a lot of personal questions about my personality, how i react to things, am i a multi-tasker, am i comfortable around other cultures and languages, etc. your preparation is very different depending on what kind of interview it is. what information did they give you about it?
  9. I'm completing the AORN Periop 101 modules now for my perioperative internship program. Has anyone taken the final exam, or is about to take it? If you have, how did you study for it? I'm trying to figure out the best way to devise a studying tool as I have just started the program (7/26 modules completed:yeah:). Thanks everyone!!
  10. I just graduated from Nursing School as an RN and am beginning an internship as an OR RN. I was wondering what I should remember to have with me in my pockets at all times, i.e. tape, scissors, stethoscope, pen light? Any information would be greatly appreciated. All of the advice on this website for OR nurses has been such a great help. Thanks everyone!
  11. I'm 23 and going to graduate from a Florida ADN RN program in April. I'm doing well in school and I really love nursing. I'm finishing my OB/Peds this semester, and I really thought that's what I wanted to get into. Turns out... It's NOT ! My rotation in the OR last semester was :heartbeat incredible :heartbeat and I can't stop thinking about how much fun I had !! Where do I begin becoming an OR Nurse ASAP? I really don't want to get stuck being a floor nurse. I want to be an OR Nurse!! Where do I go from here? HELP!!! ANY advice is surely welcome! Thank you!
