  1. Hello there, I work at a Facility that runs short staffed and I am a per-diem Nurse. I get called all the time to cover for people that call in sick and just want a day off. I often even do doubles of 16 hour shifts.....they shave off 30 min from our paycheck because they consider it an overlap......I average working about 4 days a week. I don't want to be a 40 hour RN, because I don't want to get burned out. The Facility only wants to give me Full time status if I agree to a 40 hr position, but I know that is not right for me. I am grateful for the job and I absolutely love Psyche Nursing, but don't you all agree that any more than 4 shifts a week can lead to burn out.....??? Thanks for your point of view...........:)
  2. Life is short.....Do what you were born to do....Be a psyche Nurse...let the adrenaline junkies do ER, let the CCICU nurses be OCD, just go with your gut and it will never let you down......... All the Best
  3. Okay sorry for the very late news....But I was lucky to get a psyche Nurse job back in June...I am so happy I could just pinch myself. I am out here in the Bay Area too!! There is hope everyone...........Never never give up............... Newby Nurse.....
  4. Thank you....I worked last night in the Kids unit and in a shift , reported off, checked physicians orders, charted, performed an admit interview, discharged a pt, passed meds, ran group, answered the phone etc....I would say that when I do go on my own, I too will probably be flying by the seat of my pants, but a lot of the action items seem to come naturally. I enjoy assessing sucide risks because this is when the pts open up. I hear so many stories.....I suppose this is an art that i will have to develop as I go............ thx
  5. Hi David, Thanks again for your honest response.....but will management let me learn as I go through the proabtion period......I do not have to feel threatened that I am not fast enough or good enough. All I am saying is that I want to make it through my probation and enjoy psyche Nursing because it is trully where I belong......I just don't want to feel threatened by the probationary period.....What do you think??? thanks
  6. Thanks for the earlier response....it helped a lot....
  7. ]Hi ....I just started in a psyche facility and they give you about 3 weeks orientation and then you are on the floor. Very overwhelmning...The legal and everything....lots to know...how long does it take to get the hang....Will I make my 90 day probation......They seem supportive but are kind ramming things at me....What do you think?? Thanks everyone.... My question pertains to whether or not the facility which is private will give you a certain amount of time to perform and if you dont perform will they terminate you. Under the circumstances that i am a new grad I was just wanting to know how long the average learning curve is for a new grad Nurse to get into the groove of performance....

Hi there...I couldn't resist to say something. Not only talk to the students but also have a parent meeting. Make parents aware of the signs and symptoms and keep them on the look out. Encourage them to talk to their kids daily....What ever it takes....they need to watch them closely. Middle school can be the introductory to emotional trials and tribulations....I wish you the best and thank you for being there for those darling children.....:redbeathe
  13. thanks that is so encouraging.....I am freaking out because I have been on many interviews and it feels so hard out there....I am in California and it is tough beans out here.....
  14. Hi Out there. I have been on several interviews and they seem to go well especially when you get an hour interview you think things are going well, but then they say HR will contact you. What does this mean??? Is this the proverbial NO??? It is very frustrating.....what are your thoughts.....trying to stay positive........ thanks everyone.....
  15. I just recently went on a psyche Nurse interview and it took about an hour. The Manager asked every imaginable question about meds ands scenarios. It actually felt like an oral exam. She then told me that they do hire new grads but that I may not being considered because they want more experience. I then emphatically told her that i had a wealth of personal and work expereience in another field that was transferrable. I implored how much I wanted to be considered for the position. She then stated that HR would contact me in 2-3 weeks and I could follow up if I wanted. What does that mean??? Is this the proverbial will call you don't call us statement? I thought that the interview went well. I answered all the questions well and with confidence, but she didn't give me the "I want to hire you vibe". What do you think???
  16. Hi There.....Sometimes people project their own fears onto you when it is really that they cannot get through Nursing school. Do not listen to them. Avoid negative people......Steer clear of any Teachers, classmates, realtives, or friends that say that you CANNOT do this. If you put the time in and really want this.....YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! Most of All, Trust your gut instinct and do not second guess your self. Best of Luck !!
  17. This Fantastic!!!!! Thank you for sharing....... )

    why do you suck??
  19. Another question for anyone??? Do the hospitals advertise externships in their websites or do you have to ask for one if you develop a rapport while student nursing at that hospital??? thx
  20. thanks sooo much :1luvu: !!! jlnewnurse
  21. If you did all that you could, than you did your best......and that is all that anyone can ask. your conscience should be a t peace.............JLnew nurse.
  22. Why won't she look up meds?? Isn't she an A student. She couldn't possibly be too lazy if she is an A student. What a stressful situation! I suppose I would have another nurse(Advanced) observe her and see what they think......and so you get another perspective that is fair and neutral. Also, think about discussing your concerns with the school so that they can learn from this situation and better teach future students. I taught public education for 12 years and this is another learning example for everyone to gain from......Good Luck woth your decision...and Thank you for being a teacher/guider to nurses.... JLnewnurse
  23. What website would be a good place to research?? The Va Hospital's or Teaching Hospital's? Or is there a general website?? The Nursing resource websites from the schools seem to have a new grad link, but no externship/internship info. What do you know?? Thanks...........JLnewnurse
  24. What website would you recommend?? The only websites that I am finding new grad and externships are hte websites linked to my Community College. Or do I go to the Hospital websites?? Sorry to be so needy, jlnewnurse
