Hello Trauma Nurses
Thanks you guys. It does sound like something I would like. But I don't think I would like the build up to get to that point. I don't like the E.R. One time I got violently ill during the clinical week. I had a clinical instructor that was head of trauma and she let me make it up in the ER. It was ok, but I don't think I could deal with that population that long. So I don't know if it would be worth it to do that for years before getting a position in trauma. I can go anywhere after graduation really. I'm young and don't have anything tying me down. So I'm hoping to find something I'll like and go for it, whereever that is. I guess theres a lot of things that they don't tell you before you sign up for nursing school, like what the patient population is really like. lol. Thanks everyone.

Hello Trauma Nurses
I am curious what a typical day in your life is. I am in nursing school now, working nights as a sitter mainly on med surg floors, but also a lot of ICU, and I hate 'sitting' in the E.R. But mainly these confused patients are driving me nuts! I don't mean to sound bad, but its one of the hardest things I ever did in my life (I've been sitting 9 months). So anyway, I was wondering what Trauma was like. I have a prettty strong stomach and I like the rush thing. I like to help people that are in such a state as trauma get better or help save their life. But ofcourse I know very little about what a Trauma nurse 'really' does. Thanks.

Civilians
I would like to help heal those who fought for our country cursedirishman, no other motives. I care about that population, but actually joining the Army or another branch I'm not interested in for personal reasons, that is why I was wondering about civilian medical jobs.

London
Thanks you guys. I will look at that link. I've done some research, but it helps to hear it from people that have some more inside scoop, instead of what a website paints. I've been to Amsterdam in 2002, they all spoke English in public, but its the work place that I'm worried about. But I will genuinely look at the options all of you generously provided. Thank you.

Civilians
Hello. I'm interested in Civilian nursing with the army or something. I wan't to work with the troops and everything, it really feels like my calling. I would think of Army nursing, but I've waited a very long time to have some independance and live life my way, so I don't think that that lifestyle would be fitting for me right now. Not having to do boot camp or get deployed is attractive to me as well. So it seems civilian would be the best fit. But I don't really know anything about what it REALLY is like. There isn't a lot of information it. If anyone is knowlegable, a little info would be great. I only saw one website that I got from AJN this months. Thanks.

Men in L&D
Wow. I'm shocked and surprised. I'm a first year nursing student and I have heard that the OB rotation in the second year of school can be really uncomfortable for males. Maybe its in certain regions, mine being Michigan. Ive even been rejected by women a few times at my job as a sitter. When you don't deal with anything at all private. I already got rejected a few times in my med surg rotations as well. But then again, I am 20 years old and maybe that has a lot to do with it, and like I said the region. I respect their decisions though, but it is nice when the pts aren't like that because I am nothing but professional and wouldn't ever dream of anything innapropriate in any way. I guess I would say that its nice when you can just do your job and not worry about being suspected of being a creep while your at it. lol. But also some of the women (usually older) can't help feeling uncomfortable and thats okay. Their usually nice women.
- Finally an OB job

Is nursing depressing? Would you leave because of that?
Thats what I have been wondering myself. I am a sitter now while I'm in nursing school. And I know not all of the pts are like the ones I have to sit for, but I don't know if I want to be a punching bag for a living like a lot of nurses seem to be. Its the worst in ER and stuff. But thats what I am trying to figure out. Where I can go where I won't be a punching bag. lol. No one tells you that about nursing. I thought it was taking care of sick people, and I knew that the pts might be grouchy from time to time, but some of the pts are enough to make you want to pull out your hair. However, I think when I don't have to spend 8 hours in a hospital room listening to them the entire time, and can go and take care of other pts and have a break from the tough ones, then I willl be a lot happier.

How many of you are on prescription drugs for anxiety, depression, mental health?
I've been depressed since I was 12, and its gotten worse the last year. When I was in the begining of my first rotation I started having these bad feelings, they felt like bad omens, and it felt like I had just watched a really depressing movie or something (diffrent than the chronic depression feeling), and I didn't feel safe in life. It wasn't until I did the mental health semester I learned what this was, anxiety. I have since gotten better, about 3 months ago after learning about spirituality and meditation. But I still struggle and do feel like I need medication to take that edge off that is still there. I needed to study tonight, but I just couldn't... But I'm also 19, and without insurance, or good insurance should I say. So I have to brave it for a while.

Jobs for pre-nursing students
I just got a job as an adult sitter, and I am a nursing student. It pays 8-10 dollars an hour around here. So you should call some hospitals about that. You could also become a nursing aid.

oh, so you're studying to be a "male" nurse...
Never got it here in Michigan. EVeryone has had good things to say. The only thing is one of my nursing instructioners was really hard on me on my Med Surg rotation. Grant it, I wasn't all that yet. It was still my first year. But I do think that my gender had something to do with her not liking me very much. Like I said, I wasn't great yet. But there has been worse, and I wasn't that bad. So sexism like that can go both ways. I don't have proof. But I was the only male, and my classmates who were female suspected sexism before I did.
