Broward College/Miami-Dade College, RN's HELP!! Where Do I Begin?
Good Day All Nurses, So, I was always told that the the only dumb questions are the ones not being asked.. So Here It GOES: To get into Broward College's or Miami-Dade College's Nursing Program, where do I start? I attended BC previously with the intent to get into their Nursing Program.. B/C of health/family issues I had to withdraw from my classes. AnyHOoz, now that I'm ready to finish what I started with my ADN degree.. I am absolutely LOSTED on where to start. I have appts lined up for BC and MDC's academic advisors, but I thought I'd ask on here as well. I still have a few pre-reqs to complete and my issue is figuring out what classes can be done prior to submitting and after submission, like when do I actually submit my app, basically a step-by-step guide for folks in my position who are in pursue of becoming a nurse.. ANY ADVICE, would be helpful.. Maybe book and professors recommendations..? I'm SSSSSOOOOOOOOO ready to start just weary about being able to do this.. Thanks to all that viewed and replied!!

Better to take an actual "PCT" class or just Phlebotomy??
In FL (Broward County Area), the terms CNA & PCT are interchangable. PCT's however, have additional training in Phlebotomy & EKG [[TRAINING- but aren't certified in those areas]].. If you are already certified in CNA I would recommend taking a Phlebotomy & EKG course and become certified. It looks great on your resume, and the pay rate is a bit higher. Hospitals would hire you as PCT or a PCNA. The more certifications you get, the more marketable you are.

Patient Care Tech/CNA-same thing?
If you don't mind me asking what part of FL do you work? and is it a hospital or LTC?

Any CNA advice would be helpful!
if you are like me, you often second guess yourself. first off breath!! i totally understand how fustrating this whole nursing thing can be. in south fl, cna's make roughly about $8-$10, pct's $9-$12.. this figure is coming from doing some major research and calling around at hospitals. some hr personnels are actually willing to help you out on your search. experience & certifications do matter, and working nights/wknds!! the difference between a cna and pct is that a pct has training in ekg/phlebotomy and/or certified in those areas. a cna course can take from 2 wks - 3 mths (1 day a wk classes) and pct can be 4 wks - 9mths. do your research; ask around, go to the schools themselves, speak to students, ask cna/pct's at hospital about the route they took, also look into the schools accreditation, their passing rates fl dept of health provides that info at this link: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/cna/qmr_1_10.pdf !! unfortunately, their are scam schools out there. tis why, i stress doing your research. look into hospitals, clinics, ltc's, vocational schools, tech schools, your local red cross, and here in sfl community colleges like miami-dade college offer the cna program. they also offer ekg/phlebotomy courses, too. the cna program there costs about $500 for everything. schedules differ. but for me mdc is the best choice for the schedule they offer and passing rate. their classes meet on saturday's, which work great with trying to complete my prereqs for nursing schools. another school i have read a lot about on here is: http://www.nursingunlimited.com .. as for grants. did you apply for fafsa? if so loans aren't so bad you really have to know how to budget yourself, look in scholarships, ask the counselers at schools or the dme you work at about grants or workstudy programs, or try your local wia program. it will be hard.. no intense to work and go to school. you will reap the rewards later. good luck on your studies! now realizing this post was in 2008 hopefully others can benefit from the replies to this thread.. ijs, my opinion.. don't quote me.. lolz!!

Does anybody know of any CNA/PCT/PCA training programs in south Florida ?
Also, I just found this website from the Dept of Health.. It details the approved schools and their passing rate.. For those of us trying to decide on a school.. It's best to look at this to help make the transition easier: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/Mqa/cna/QMR_2_10.pdf

Does anybody know of any CNA/PCT/PCA training programs in south Florida ?
:yeah:THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I was able to find it and print out the curriculum as well. I too am TERRIFIED of investing my money into a schooling that takes me no where . My ultimate goal is to become an RN.. I decided to try CNA/PCT route b/c of the HIGH demand for them at my local Hospital and to get my feet wet, while continuing with my RN prereqs.. The hospital requires, you to be certified in EKG/Phlebotomy.. I was able to find both courses at Lindsey Hopkins in Dade.. So far the schedules are working for me.. AnyHoOz, [sorry for the ramble].. I called and left a message to see if it includes books and supplies.. Hopefully it does.. Lolz! Thanks, again!

CNA program in S FL
[[knock, knock]] Hoping to revive this Thread!! I had some questions myself. I too, am interested in going the CNA route to get my feet wet, in a sense, while in pursue of my RN Degree at BC.. Miwila, did you ever start on the CNA Program, if so, where and what was it like? BumblebeeRN or labrador4122, years later are your views of your hospital still the same? And what hospital are you referring too? Bonafide, your views of McFatter are understandable.I had a friend that ONLY attended orientation for LPN and was turn off by the staff so much she decided to take another route to complete her classes. But for me HONESTLY rude people that aren't satisfied at their jobs don't discern me from my career goals.. I say since they are SO unhappy in their role, why not take a course in the same instution they work for and move on to something new? Lolz, IJS.. AnyhOoz, does anyone know what other schools offer CNA? The cost, Schedule? I'm looking for a school preferably in the SFL area (Broward & Dade Counties to be exact)..
