What is your concern with doing BP checks and basic scrubbing? She's 2 months away from 18 and will have the same liability as any adult. I can't imagine anything changing too much with her maturity or ability to learn in the next 2 months.

Great question. I have in the past and get lost in a rabbit hole of a phone tree. Once I did speak with someone and all she said was, "I don't know", not, "I'll find out". Maybe it's improved since then. Might try them again. Thanks for the reminder

She approached us, we don't have a designated program, per say. Again, we are very rural (located in a field, essentially, 40 minutes from the nearest hospital). We all wear many hats and have to contract out our legal services. I, like everyone else out here, has tasks outside of our traditional "scope" because there is just no one else to do it. The Medical Director is aware of everything and understands her license is on the line for mistakes, but the alternative option is critically delayed care or no care at all (many residents refuse to go to the hospital, even with MI sxs). We are the wild west, folks. Likewise, the students in this tiny town have few opportunities unless they want to work in the fields. I am not going to turn someone down is interested in learning about alternative career paths. I'd like to do our best to protect our patients, ourselves, our facility and her, so I'm trying to research my best options and again, hope for the best.

We are a small, very rural, primary care clinic. We have a local vocational school that trains CNAs and MAs. Some start classes in high school, which has clinical training as part of the program, so there has to be something they're using. I emailed the department head of the votech but have not yet heard back (they are on holiday break). Our volunteer wants to enter the medical field and will be doing an internship through her high school and will be with us every afternoon through May. She won't learn anything by handing out water and we don't have visitor passes. I'd like to teach her how to do very basic scrubbing of the next days charts, BP checks, etc. If she does not have access to our computers, I will have no work for her. There is no job at our clinic that does not involve PHI, besides custodial work, after hours. I conduct the HIPAA training at our facility and plan to put her through the full training I would give any employee. She will sign a confidentiality agreement, but I'm wondering if her parents also need to sign as well? Plus, would like to see if there is actual policy concerning this, but I have not had any success with Google, Esq.

Hello all, Does anyone know what the law is for holding underage (17yo) volunteers responsible for HIPAA when they are working with PHI? Our IT has some concerns and I'd like to see the guidance on this to know for sure. Should we have her parents also sign a confidentiality statement? I am the HIPAA trainer at our clinic, but I have not seen anything addressing this. Thanks in advance!

Next year, the school nurse at a small rural school near me will be retiring. I have already let them know last year my intent to apply and they were very excited about it. They asked me to volunteer to get trained and attend training with the school nurse this year. I would need to take time off from my M-F job as the Community Health nurse (also a manager) in a small rural town. I love my job, but school nursing is my dream job. Education + nursing + kids = perfect for me :) I was just told today from the school nurse that the one requirement is that I have a BSN. I was heartbroken . I would not be able to get my BSN by next fall, no matter what accelerated courses I take. Has anyone come across a situation where they've made an exception to this rule? I would have 2 years as a Community Health RN under my belt by the time I would start and would be wiling to sign a contract to get my BSN within 2 years. I am used to wearing many hats and working within a very constrained budget (we are also a FQHC) I am willing to present to the Board of Education if need be. Has anyone heard of or experienced an exception to this rule? I have hope, hopefully...

Leslie - the norms for this pt. are PT 9.6-11.8 and INR is 2.0-3.0.

That's my confusion. Why is the PT above normal, but the INR is below 2.0? (Pt. is >60yo and 2d. post surgery) Although...it's been hard to get a straight answer about PT/INR levels in school. Mostly I keep getting that they are the same thing/go together/just worry about one, etc. It's probably just my ignorance, but shouldn't they be on the same side of normal?

Hi all, I had a pt. whose PT wa 12.6, but INR was 1.28 (just started warfarin). I am just a student RN, so I must be confused about how this works. Can one be increased while the other is decreased? Or do they normally correlate in the same direction? Thanks!

Has anyone gone through San Juan College's nursing program? What did you think of it? I am trying to decide between this program and Pueblo Community College's (Durango, CO) for the fall. TIA!

In AZ, there is the Banner Nurse Fellows program through the Maricopa Community College system. It is very competetive, but if accepted, they waive your tuition in exchange for a 3-year commitment to work in the Banner Health system after becoming an RN. My plan was to apply to that program, but unavoidable reasons, had to move to Colorado and am scrambling to find a program. Would love to find something similar to what is being offered in AZ. Does anyone happen to know of an employment-commitment program that waives or reduces tuition in Colorado? I am in SW Colorado now, but would also be interested in northern CO. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! :)

Thanks for asking! :) I LOVE it. It's mostly review for me as I've been through all of the nursing pre-reqs, but the instructors are fabulous and they take their Boards pass rate (highest in the state) very seriously. I would highly recommend this place and think it's a steal for the cost for what I'm getting out of it.

I am starting the CNA program at RSAA tomorrow. They mentioned that we should bring ID, birth certificate and CPR cert, but I completely forgot to ask about what to wear and what to expect for lunch. Is there a cafeteria on site, take out nearby, or should I bring a lunch? Thanks!

ASU is switching to the TEAS because the company that distributes the NET was just bought and the new owners do not want to continue on with the NET. If this is true, then the changes will take place everywhere. It's probably best to talk to an advisor before studying for either the NET or the TEAS. Same goes with the rest of our questions. I spoke with an advisor in July, only to call back and ask about the NET/TEAS situation and be told that so much has now changed that I need to speak to an advisor again. What someone may tell you here is what applied when they last spoke to an advisor. It's best to get the most up-to-date information by going to the source, IMO

I know this sounds crazy and morbid, but I would really like to be grossed out with tales of nursing downsides. Let me explain... I am really excited to be a nurse. I still have a year of pre-reqs before getting into my preferred BSN program. I guess I just want to limit the surprises and the idealizations of being a nurse. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's going to be a big bed of roses. I am just hoping for someone to try to "convince" me not to be a nurse, and hoping that I will hear a lot the negatives of this career before actually experiencing them so I can be more psychologically prepared. The ultimate goal of this exercise is to improve my chances of being successful in nursing school and beginning my career without becoming too disenchanted. Does this makes sense? If so, please gross me out :)

sarah- You might want to check with your school. In AZ, we were just informed that they may be switching to the TEAS. When I spoke with an advisor, she told me it was because ERI (who created the NET) has been bought out by another company and that company does not plan to continue the NET. If this is true, then the NET will be phased out every where, I would think. Just trying to save the study hassle if your school might be switching

Ok ladies and gents. I just spoke with someone in the nursing department and she told me that, although it is not official, they will most likely be changing to the TEAS. Apparently, the company that administers the NET was bought out and the new company will not continue with the NET. If this is true, then the NET will disappear across all nursing programs, not just here in AZ. I would imagine they would still honor the score of students who have already taken the NET and were satisfied with their score. For the rest of us, this is good news :)

I have really liked the folks I've talked to there. The Jan. program offered the exam a week after the last day of class and the Nov. class offers it 2 days after class (on a Sunday, no less!)
