I called them this past week and heard the same as well. I just want to find out so I can start planning everything accordingly!

That is good to hear that they are helpful and encourage you to come to them. I just wanted to make sure if I get in and go there that I won't have to look forward to the way it was in the info session! That reassures me to hear that you have schooling from many different types of schools (CC, 4 yr universities). I have most of my credits from 2 different 4 yr colleges and some from CC's as well. I just hoped that wouldn't weigh against me!

I am a dental hygienist so I work with patients everyday. :) When I was in school the classes/clinics were rigourous too. It was basically every week day 8-5 (or longer). Its like a job and a half! So I feel I do know what school will be like (basically you have no life other than school). Hopefully that'll count for something. I was on the admissions committee for my DH school and we had the same thing with alot of applicants that were unqualified, so I do understand their logic about not getting peoples hopes up. Atleast you have a science/math background. I'm sure that helps alot. Do you find the professors are helpful and really want you to do well? Also if you don't mind me asking what was your GPA when you applied and where did you go to school at? I really liked the fact Georgetown has a 80% reimbursement program for tuition if you work for the hospital for 3 yrs after...but then again you have to foot the bill at first :cringe: I really liked the fact with Mason you were done in 1 yr. I feel the biggest hurdle is getting into the school. I hate the waiting game.

When I went to the info session they basically said they look at everything. From the way they were talking they seemed to place more weight on the TEAS and what pre-reqs you had completed since that gives them a better idea of the kind of academic person you are. They were very discouraging at the info session. I don't know if they get alot of unqualified applicants but the man conducting the session seemed very negative. However the other people with the program were very nice. I was just frustrated b.c I had taken nutrition in hygiene school and they said they wouldn't accept it and I had to retake it over. I also took comparative anatomy (which is human/vertebrate) and they basically told me I needed to take the regular again. Its just the fact I have to pay more money to retake what I basically did but oh well. I have applied to 3 other schools as well but I really hope I get in here. What did you get your original bachelor's in? This is the powerpoint from the info session I went to http://chhs.gmu.edu/pdf%20files/school_of_nursing/pdf/applications/Info-Session-2nd.pdf

do they also weigh what kind of degree you have as well? I have my BS in Dental Hygiene..personally I would think that it would look better if you have some sort of healthcare/science related degree...does anyone know?

Has anyone taken the TEAS test yet? I just took it today and got a 88.2. It also gave the national/program averages and percentiles (72.8/77.4 and 97/93 for me)...does anyone know what is a competitive score for this program? I tried looking online but to no avail.... Also is anyone applying for Fall 2010? Our applications are due next week! It's coming up sooo soon!!!!

It says prior to Jan 15 of 2009 they won't accept those scores but those after Jan 15 2009 they accept. It says on the application I did online that the TEAS scores must be submitted with the application. (I made that mistake too), and their application for fall of 2010 is due by this Jan 15th at 5pm.

I am pretty sure you have to take the TEAS before submitting the application. I am taking mine next week.

    Dental Hygienist turning Nurse (hopefully)

Is there any area that you would suggest specializing in? I am really thinking about going for NP or CRNA. I feel like nursing will be more satisfying for me as well. I definently feel that people just think we "pick teeth", I feel like I need some more appreciation than that

Good for you!!! I wish you the best! I actually have decided to get on the ball and take some more of the prereq's I need to get into an accelerated nursing prog. I think I am going to go for NP or CRNA. (Id love to do CRNA, if I can get in). I think you are making the right decision too. Just think further down the line what you can do with a nursing degree as opposed to hygiene...and all the great docs you will meet to take care of your expanding family!!!

    Dental Hygienist turning Nurse (hopefully)

I am glad I found this thread! I have been debating whether to go into nursing (I am looking to eventually do a nurse practicioner or CRNA program). I love hygiene but I feel it is stagnant as well and am looking further on down the road if my body will be able to keep up with the daily stressors of hygiene...not to say nursing isn't stressful I just like the options later down the road (when I get to be an old fart ) I feel I am young enough now to take the risk for change..I just want to also make sure I am making a good choice for a move, I am hoping for better benefits in the future and more room to move up and progress...any opinions or advice is much welcomed!
