  1. I worked for the American Red Cross as an Aphersis Nurse for 10 years in the 1980's it was very fasinating and fun. I had to leave because unlike you Angioplasty, we were on call. If a premie needed a white cell buffy coat to treat sepsis we were called into work to find a donor at 2 AM. I had two very small children at the time. We did therapeutic aphersis in the local hopitals also. treating a host of illnesses that were plasma specific. The Donors make tha job great! they are all very warm heated people. Enjoy
  2. It is amazing the hospitals can work us to the bone and then require 30 days notice to leave on good terms. I think it is so they can suck every last drop of blood from us...........................no wonder there is a nursing shortage!!! I have always given 2 weeks as required by my facility. I have not seen this 30 day buisness. Good luck hope you find something you enjoy!
  3. Dear Lisa, I went through the same thing w/ the BON 3 years ago for charting errors w/ narcotics. They just a few months ago got around to handing out my punishment. My licence is now restricted for 2 years and I have to call in daily for random urine screens. I never once tested positive for anything either, because I never took anything. I worked in a fast paced PACU and was careless. I'm going to get thru these 2 years. Then I just may leave nursing. I'm 56 years old and have 3 kids in college or I would leave right now. I'll be 58!!!! before am off "probation" Good luck to you. Dealing w/ the BON is a very long and difficult process.
  4. I have always thought it stood for do not resuscitate. treat pain, infection, maintain nutritional and fluid needs but Do Not Resuscitate
  5. I have always thought it stood for [/u][/b]do not resuscitate. treat other symptoms pain infection fluid needs but do not resuscitate!
  6. You are right. Each pt must be looked at individually. I was generalizing. But many times Blood Products are wasted. I have seen it time and time again. Many Pt's who have suffered blood loss due to surgery actually do better if not transfused. The body is working so hard to accomadate all the new antibodies after a blood product is transfused that is actually slows the healing process. Some Doc's argure that a couple of days of O2 is actually better than transfusing. There are many Pt's with disease processes that and transplant pts. truely need blood product transfusion
  7. I worked on a tranfusion team for over 10 years. PRBC's are not needed for a Hb above 6 and maybe not then, at times they cause more problems than they solve. New cells into a compromised body don't allways help
  8. I would like to start a topic for nurses who have been RN's for 25-30 years! Let me know what your doing? I am 55 and still working , I know a lot of you are too ! What are you doing?
  9. I Am Curious To Know If Anyone Has Been Involved In Any Type Of Action By Their State Bon? Just Doing A Little Survey?
  10. I have been to AA and NA meetings, Just because I know I may be sent there one day by the clueless BON . They required that we pray and more than once they ask us to SING Christian songs? ???? for the Bible tells me soooooooo!!!!!!!! not everyone is a Christian It was too weird !!!
  11. oh wkout grl Find another specialist as fast as you can something is very wrong for you eyes to be failing so fast. get on the web and do some research if you cant see well enough to do this ask a friend or family member. good luck It is dreadful that 2 specialists would give up on you!!!!!!! be pro active and demand more from them if they are truley eye specialists they would never give up until they have an answer :uhoh21:
  12. I worked for a utilization review/case management company. we certified procedures and hospital stays we used cpt codes and icd-9 codes while doing this. But that was a small part of our job. we took clinical info pertaining to pts' illness and certified hospital stays for medical necessity. this is becoming a big buisness not only in insurance, all hospitals have ur/case managment dept ....maybe this was what the seminar was for??? you must hold a licence in order to do UR or case management could be PT OP RN LSW don't know if this helps you any
  13. I have worked with blood all my life, Red Cross, Angio, PACU, IV Therapy, Any nurses out there who are interested in the same thing? Blood is what keeps us alive:)
  14. Thank you all for the advise. :) I'm glad to have found this message board. everyone is helpful! Thamks again
  15. I worked for the Red Cross from 76-1990 I was there during the discovery of HIV transmition thru donated blood... and yes it is a very regulated industry, but it was one of the best jobs I ever had. Blood donors are healthy and generous people. It is very different than careing for the ill. people are happy and the the staff is happy. Look into it! I think you might find it very rewarding!
  16. I worked for the Red Cross for over 10 years. I worked in whole blood collection for 6. It was a great Job we traveled over 150 mile radius and set up collection sites in churches and armories, schools and factories! I loved it but after I started a family the hours were not in sink with Day care providers. :) Now that my children are older I would love to go back. When I worked with the Red Cross they hired only RNs now I believe they use alot of Techs. Good luck
  17. The Board investigation I am involved with concerns documentation errors w/narcotics. I was reported over 1 year ago. I have been contacted once by the BON one time. I spoke with the investigator on the phone in Jan of 03. I hired an attorney familiar with disciplinary action and he says to wait on the findings. He is my representative of record with the Board. They have contacted him twice. but not since May of 03 . Just wondering how much longer I have to wait. Do they have to tell me the findings of the investigation? How long does it take to get a hearing? When I check the status of my license on the BON web site there is no action against it?
  18. Is any one out there subject of a disiplinary action? I need some advice?:
