Grad with BA in psych, conisidering a career in psych nursing
I have a BA in Psych and BS Nursing Also Certified in Psych. I've been a Psych Nurse for 8 yrs.. I think the BA in Psych gives you a added perspective and knowledge in Psychiatry as well as looking good on the resume :). Right now I am a Psych Travel Nurse working as a manager. Financially speaking it's hard to beat Travel Nursing. I've investigated further education such as becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Specialist and I continue to do look into that. Financially it doesn't pay more than Travel Nursing but there are so many other considerations than money mainly what you are happy doing. I like Travel Nursing not just for the financial gain but the experiences of working with different facilities and Traveling in different parts of the country. You do make more per hour worked especially if you become knowledgable in what companies to work for or how to work as an independent contractor. This allows you time to do the things you want and even take off time between assignments...I like that :). Some perm management jobs may offer big bucks but you may have to work 50 - 60 hours a week with constant worry and still not make the equivelent per hour what a Traveler makes. Some Travelers can make over $100,000 a year

Warning about MedCEU.com CE Provider
Some CE providers are claiming accreditation but they aren't when you go to confirm it. One example is http://www.medceu.com . I use to be registered with them. It was pretty convenient ...you pay a flat fee like $35 and you could do unlimited for a year. You read some material that was decent and did a post test and print a certificate. Later I and some other nurses noted that we were double billed one year and later found out that they were not certified through the ANCC or any ANCC approved certifier. They have a warning about them on the ANCC approved provider/certifier list. For some reason they are still in business. I talked with the ANCC and they said they had filed complaints with numerous regulatory agencies. I guess technically you could use them for contact hours from non accredited sources but I won't because of the double billing, false advertising and the fact that they send you email ads constantly ( I had to finally cancel an old address). They never answer emails and have no phone number.

Resources to study for certification
There is a study guide for it. Look for the most up to date one on amazon.com. Also in the material sent to you before testing is included a study guide to help you prepare which I would advise you to review. Get to the test center address day before, get a near by hotel so you can get a good nights rest. I paced myself according to the time alotted for the test and number of questions. I took the whole time and was the last to finish but I passed. :)

Psych RN Continuing Ed?
Thanks for info I'll check it out and post others after I review. One quick note to warn others though. A company called http://www.medceu.com or http://www.medceu.org is advertising they are ANCC accredited. I checked with the ANCC and they are neither accredited through them or through any other organization the ANCC accepts. They continue to advertise this on their website and have been reported to the FTC and other but some how they rermain. I was registered with them and found I was double billed one year along with other nurses. They will send you constant emails about new courses even way after you cancel your membership. They are tempting in that they have material you read online and test afterwards and then print out a certificate. You can get 50% of your contact hours from non accredited providers but I won't do business with them anymore. They never answer emails either. The ANCC has a warning about them on their website along with a listing of accredited approvers/providers.

Psych RN Continuing Ed?
Hi fellow Psych Nurses! Looking for your input. To find some decent continuing Education for Psych Nurses (Certification). Prefer online or home study. Conferences are too expensive and inconvenient although I've heard of Cruises for Credit which may be an option when I want a vacation or even some courses in the Caribbean Ha! :). I've done some Internet searching and found a few online courses here and there some overpriced some decent. For certification I think 51% have to be from a ANCC accredited provider . Thanks in advance for your input.
