Westchester Community College(WCC) Spring 2014
Hey KingWCC, I spoke with Mrs. ***** this past Monday and she didn't seem confused about the days at all. I signed up for Friday morning clinicals and I got just that, 7-2. Thursdays are Lecture and Lab, 8-5. But, I'm sure there will be massive confusion the first few classes: Nurse's Packs lost, classroom changes, unapproved physicals and tears. Can't wait!

Westchester Community College(WCC) Spring 2014
Hello Classmates! I was just looking over the Reading List that we received during Orientation. I only have 1 page which stops at Exam 2, Unit 3. Is everyone's like this or am I missing some pages? Let me know. Thanks!

Kids, Nursing School, Household, Work???
The frozen lasagna with a salad sounds good. So do the frozen meals in ziplocs souund great too. What kind of meals still taste good after being frozen? Its a little hard to get my toddler in bed by 8 tho, but bath, book and bed for them is a great idea to show love. ♡

Kids, Nursing School, Household, Work???
How do you handle it all? I will be the first to admit, I tried to handle it all before and failed. Two years ago I was accepted into Cochran while in my 3rd trimester, moving to a new apartment, working 30 hours a week and an 8 year old son. I ended up flunking out with a 78 (80 required to pass). I barely had dinner on the table, NEVER got enough studying time and felt like I was losing my mind. I have been blessed and lucky enough to be accepted into another RN program. Some things have changed: My daughter will be 2 when I start, we are staying in this apt and I'm not working. But I am desperately in need of advice. How do you get dinner cooked at a decent hour? What do you do with the kids so they feel loved and attended to? When do you fit in time to get laundry done or the floors mopped? Thanks in advance!

Daycare and Nursing
Thanks for the advice. There are a few in home childcare places close to where I live. I've interviewed them all and the one that I absolutely love opens at 7. Plus, we are trying to survive on Hubby's income alone, so money is tight. And he feels that I should cover everything else (cooking, cleaning, kids, sitter) since he is the only one who works. Bleh, I just wish my family was more reliable.

Daycare and Nursing
Future RN student (start Jan 2014) with an important question: Where do your babies go when you're doing your clinicals / shift? I have a toddler who will be 2 by the time I start and I really have no idea where I'm going to put her. Clinicals start at 7am ( which means I'm parking the car by 6:30) and most daycares here in NY open at that time. Hubby works nights and is dead to the world at that time, my nearby siblings work and leave early. One grandmother has sleep problems and can't watch the kids early while the other is wishy washy at best and not very dependable. Btw, I am the only one with a car. So I was just wondering what kind of arrangement do you have for your kiddos? Any advice? Please let me know!

Wow Noel, kudos to you for getting all those classes done! With kids to boot! I have kiddies too (9 and 19 months), so I know how tough it could be. Pharm and Micro are hard, but not impossible. May I ask what your TEAS and gpa are? Also, would you mind posting or PMing the booklist you got? Thanks and good luck this Fall!

I got a 78 on my TEAS with a 3.1 gpa. I actually want to do health/fitness courses. I used to be athletic in high school but fell off. Plus working out would be a good stress reducer, not to mention dropping some necessary lbs! I have Principles of Inorganic Chem completed, so maybe I will do Chem, Statistics and Pol. Sci. this Fall. How did you do? What's your plan for Fall?

Westchester Community College(WCC) Spring 2014
Yes, I took almost everything. I have to take a humanities course and those 2 health/fitness credits. Oh and Dosage Calculations. I haven't completed a college math course either, which it seems like I don't need for ADN, but I know I will need for my BSN. How bout you?

Cochran School of Nursing (Yonkers)
Depends. Are you going for Day or Evening classes? They might consider you if you're going for Day. For Evening, you need to have everything before you submit your application. Make sure you also have your high school math and chemistry done too.

Cochran School of Nursing (Yonkers)
I had a 3.50 gpa, so I think that's a B+ overall. I did pretty well on the Entrance Exam too, so that helped. Make sure you get all your pre-reqs done. Good luck!!!

Taking A&P I Fall 2009?
Picking up my books tonight!!!! Classes start this weekend for me...YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:lol2: Super excited!!!! (Can't you tell????)
-
Started the Pre-Reqs Today
Lucky you! My classes don't start until September 8th! I am worried about my A&P as well. Here is what I am gonna do; take notes based on the lecture, take notes based on the chapter you have read and take notes on the lab (draw some pictures). Record the professor if she doesn't mind and listen to it driving home, doing dishes, cleaning your house, etc. Most importantly, remember to breath! I get stressed about being stressed - so I know how you feel! :chuckle Just take things as they come and concentrate on one thing at a time. Thinking about trying to figure out everything will just overwhelm you. Good luck this semester! :typing

I am seriously freaking out
Hey ColoradoGirl; Not to burst your bubble here, but I am wondering - how are you going to respond to seeing and touching cadavers, human waste, and nasty ailments that patients have? Slicing open pig heart and sheep brain is just the beginning! :chuckle

Is algebra used by nurses?
Ya know, that is a good question. (I hope not!) I am pretty sure you have to do Dosage Calculations which involves math. We might have to do some kind of algebraic expressions (x=? situations). But I am sure once you get the formula down it will be like second nature. Plus, I hear that most nurses are allowed to have a calculator on their clipboard. You will definitely need to know algebra for the entrance exam though!

Thinking about becoming a nurse, lots of questions!
Yay Pumpkin! One thing I learned and just recently is you have to keep an open mind about where you want to attend. I am sure, just like me, you have your heart set on a particular school - and that is great! But check other schools too. You don't want to get stuck on a waiting list or have to wait an additional year because you didn't make the cut. Originally, I was looking into applying for 3, but now that I see so many people interested in the same schools as me, I am applying to 6. So glad things are looking more realistic for you.

Thinking about becoming a nurse, lots of questions!
Hey Pumpkin; Congrats on going back to school, lots of us here are going into our pre-requisites. I can try to help answer some of your questions. The best thing you can do right now is to check out your local community colleges and nursing schools (some are affiliated with directly with hospitals, so also check out hospitals in your area to see if they have any programs). Write a list of questions you may have. Call them (I learned email doesn't work too well when it comes to schools - Nobody responds!) ask them what they require. Most are the same, but some can differ. Schools usually look at 3 things; your GPA (3.0 in some places - but every school is different), your entrance exam scores, and successful completion of your pre-requisites. While some schools will view your one or two of these things as more important, the best thing to do is to make sure you keep your grades up! In NY, you don't need to be an CNA or Tech or LPN to become an RN, and I would think the same for Ohio. Most schools are very selective, experience in medical field isn't necessary - but a plus! Yes, college credits do have a shelf life. I am applying to one school that says I have to have taken and passed the pre-reqs within 5 years, another one is saying 8 years and one more is saying 10 years. If necessary, you can take challenge exams such as CLEP or Excelsior, so you won't have to take the class over. But, if you have taken the class over 10 years ago, it would be wise to take the course again as a refresher or to just get your GPA up. As far as healthcare reform, I really don't know. We will have to just wait and see. But if this is what you want to do, then go for it. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!!
