HI fellow SCC Nursing students, I know that this thread is a few years old, but I was hoping you could update me on your status, did you get into the program? etc. etc... I am starting my pre req's in the Spring 2010, and would love to hear how it all turned out for you :)

I am in Ca too and am seriously considering taking the phlebotomy course to aquire a job at a hospital, and get myself into an adn program. can you give me more info on what a day in the life of a phlebotomist does? what is the starting pay in Ca? do you enjoy it? the cost of your program etc? any info would be helpful to me right now. thanks so much.

is she an lvn with a cert to do IV's? or just a straight up phlebotomist? I am interested in perhaps looking into that myself if this is the case. Can you give some more info. Is she working in a hospital? nursing home? thanks!

Hi laluna, I am in Orange county and very interested in becoming a CNA, and I will need to work nights due to my childcare issues :) this is good news to hear being that nights Cna's make more $$ :) :) can you tell me what type of facilities pay the most and how many hours the shift? are they 3/12's or the usual 8 hours, 5 days? what can you recommend I do to get started? sorry for all the questions, but your insights would be great to have!

yeah :) today was our FIRST clinical at the skills lab. it was fun...hehe....lots of bed making, handwashing and sterile field gloves....tomorrow we get to bath each other. did you guys have to do this? some of the people in our class freaked a little with the concept. i honestly don't see what the issue is...we will be fully clothed with shorts and a tank, and we will not do private parts (of course!!!). was this your first on sight clinical? do you mean you were only there half the day and then back to school? how did it go? are you enjoying this journey? and oh, they did confirm to our class that we are the ones that they have decided to add MATH along with the other curriculums. so we have lots of math ahead in this term, we did some today and will have more to come. math is not my strong point, but i am glad to know that we are being eased into it so that by the time we get to dosage calcs I won't feel so rusty. do you guys go tomorrow too? yeah miss Sandy is very nice.

wow. so this is really not the 'norm'? hmmm. I won't get too attached to this concept since this is only our sub. You said that your class did not have the original instructor as well, so is your class working through that? I take it your class is going better for you. I definitely plan on sticking it out - lol ....i am pretty invested at this point, so there is not much i can do oh, i guess you got your laptop and ipod by now, how do you like the lap top? good quality? or so so....? what do you use your ipod for? i was looking online at some flashcard apps, i think that is a great idea...it beats lugging around 50 lbs of books and multiple flashcards....do you or anyone you know have this app? if so, how are they liking it? also, thanks for all your input and encouragement! it is helping me a great deal! :) :stdnrsrck:

hey CSN, our first exam is coming up in about a week and half...the instructor said something about a 'study guide' that they give to you. she said 40 questions or so are on that guide, and 50 questions for the exam... She said if you focus on the study guide, you will have no issues with the exam...do you find this study guide to be your sure bet? i was very surprised that they have a study guide like this....it really eliminates the stress of not knowing what is on the exam, but it almost seems too good to be true. can it be THAT easy? what's been your experience with the study guides and the exams there?

we are having a few hiccups with our first term course. Our instructor is out for medical reasons....and we have had a few subs. Last Thursday we were given a pretty heavy load of homework. Most of the students I have spoken with over this weekend are freaking out with this load. I am trying to hold it together myself, but to be honest, it is a bit much. can you briefly give a norm of the work load you guys get? I am hoping this is a glitch. the instructor informed us that she did not have a 'syllabus' to go off of....(um, hello?). IMHO, she did not know what she was doing....and just threw some things together. 3 chapters in Rosedahl, 2 Ch's in Memmlers, 50 math problems in Pickar, and reviewing the MED terms and A&P....oh, and to be prepared for a quiz or 2 - but forgot to bother to give any info on what those quizes entail. I have had a few emails from other students, like i said, and everyone is feeling pretty lost at this point. IS THIS THE WAY this school is going to be like? if so, i feel lied to at this point. I understand their are glitches, and i can be flexible, but this is even too much for me at this point. the home work load is overwhelming. the class instruction was disorganized and the instructor was hard to follow. I even asked a question in order for her to clarify a word for me on the body quadrants, and she told me i would have to 'look that up myself'. nice "teaching". blech. sorry, venting here. please give me hope for this school yet....does this sound like the 'norm' workload your class is getting?????

oh...i think you have to have a certain amount of posts before you can use the 'pm', which is 'private message'. oh well, i was just going to ask you about the study load.... i am all for working my butt off, but according to them, it will add up to about 5 hours of study time a day. that is not possible for me with a family and work. How is the study load going for you and the other classmates? do you find this course so challenging that you need THAT many hours a day to pass? Also, how are the clinicals going for you guys there? are you out in facilities yet? i know they do 12 weeks inside and 12 weeks out. where are you all in your program? (still term 1 for you??)... so many questions, but i am a 'planner' and like to organize ahead of the game. thanks!!! :) :)

yup :) I am there now. Just started on Aug. 25th. Tonight was our 3rd class...(I am taking the p/t course). So far, so good. I love the instructor...! We have a sub because our First Term instructor is off for medical reasons, I am sad to think that our sub will not be the one we have for the full term. I really love her teaching style and feel a connection with her already. We get our scrubs and our first batch of books on Thursday...and I cannot wait. I am also bummed that Tuesday the 8th there will be no class due to....the holiday. Our first clinical was scheduled originally for Saturday the 12th, but that has been postponed due to many of the students being 'out of town' that weekend. So we will begin the clinicals on the weekend of the 19th. I am feeling that I made the right choice by choosing Stanbridge. I checked out other schools and they did not measure up. Some people have mentioned that the Administration comes off as disorganized, but you just take the good with the bad. Keep your eye on the goal, and the goal is passing the NCLEX. Not one school I have seen in all of Calif. can boast of a 100% pass rate.

About that subsidized childcare....I am wondering if I would qualify for this. Did financial aid help you with this? Or is there another way one would go about qualifying for this?

44 when I become an LVN. soon thereafter, put myself on a wait list for RN. Not sure how long that will take (Southern Cal colleges are horribly impacted). Somewhere in my mid to late 40's when I become an RN.

wow. I didn't realize this. I just took my daughter last week to have her preschool physical. She needed 3 shots. The 'nurse' came in with the needles, was a very mature and lovely woman...and when I asked her if she was a 'nurse' (only to 'talk shop' since I am starting ns in 2 weeks) she immediately took the defensive. She told me she was not a nurse, but an MA, and continued on .....and i quote; "been one for over 30 years and I CAN RUN CIRCLES AROUND ANY NURSE with MY experience". I almost fell over when that came out of her mouth....was a bit shocked at her reaction to being asked if she was a nurse. I was just trying to make conversation and distract my daughter and myself from the needles and impending 'doom' :). So, If i had known this "MA" was not allowed to give shots to my daughter, I am not quite sure how I would have reacted. Now, looking back, I may have said something. I wish I had known this. I don't think I will be taking my daughter back to this particular doc...I don't know. After learning this info, don't know how to feel. I am a little irritated by her poopy attitude, but now I am peeved at the doc who is allowing this? What was the MD thinking? Isn't this taking a risk? do they get a slap on the hand for this or does anyone know? just curious.

DO not give up. only those who quit never land that job. You will get there if you do not give up. You said you were an A student...that is great! But interviewing is a whole different animal. If I were you, I would use this time now to study and brush up on successful interviewing! From what you have written here, it's apparent that English may be your second language. IF so, use this time to work on your writing skills and speaking skills. And remember that even those of who were born and raised with English as our first language still may need to learn to communicate better and articulate ourselves well, especially in the interview process. You say you got all A's in school...that is wonderful and job well done! This will only help you on your way to becoming a great interviewee. Go to the library and find any books you can on the interview process. One can learn to interview well. It is a skill, just like the skills you learned and excelled at in school. You can do this. Don't give up! Best of luck to you!

Firstly, HATS OFF TO LIFELONGDREAM, CONGRATULATIONS!!! These tips are awesome! thank you all for sharing. Keep them coming - I am so encouraged by you! I know having preschoolers has it's own challenges. My husband goes to school nights, so I don't have him home during the week to help....I also am in a program where we do clinicals every Sat and one sunday a month....so the weekend time will be limited to study as well.... I am constantly making mental notes about how to manage home and school. Like i said, been out of school for over 20 years now....finally getting back to what I dream of doing....becoming a nurse. I love hearing how everyone manages their time. right now, ns is a big mystery to me, I hear all about how time consuming it is. I look at the pile of laundry from having a family of 6, and it freaks me out now! omg. I just pray it gets done after school starts!

God Bless our school nurses! That is a lot of hard work (ie, education) that hardly measures equal to their compensation, imho. The public school system is asking for an aweful lot. Here in So. Cal, the equivalent compensation to that type of education -- in a hospital setting (in a management type position)--- is 100K and upwards. I know that money is not everything, but thats a huge decrease in salary to ask for a nurse with that kind of education/qualifications.
